Due: Wednesday, April 9, 2002
Drop-off Location: Mass Communication Office, Rm. SP 310

Instructions: Complete 1 of the 2
questions below.
- Students will be required to write a paper on the impact of an
emerging on-demand TV or interactive TV technology on the Canadian
television industry. Please
clearly select the technology, identify its capabilities and critically assess
its impact. In assessing the
impact of the technology chosen, consider the impact on audience
behaviour, business considerations (e.g. impact on advertising) and
broadcasting policy.
Your answer should be 6 to 8 pages
in length, double-spaced. Lecture
material and class readings should provide the basis for your analysis, though
other materials may be drawn on secondarily.
- Critique a CRTC regulation or policy (e.g. simultaneous
substitution; Canadian content requirements on broadcast, specialty or pay
TV services, tiering and linkage on cable and DTH). You are free to select the CRTC
regulation or policy, but your assignment must include: a clear
description of the regulation or policy; its intended objective upon
creation and how it succeeded and/or failed to meet its intended
objective. A recommendation on how
to revise the regulation or policy or an alternative way to meet the
objective would also be desirable, but not mandatory for this assignment.
Your answer should be 6 to 8 pages
in length, double-spaced. Lecture
material and class readings should provide the basis for your analysis, though
