Why do we pray?
August 04, 1998
This is a fairly simple question, but one I constantly ask myself.
I have lately had difficulty praying. God obviously knows what I'm thinking and often I don't feel that connected when I pray.
Any advice? I know that prayer is not supposed to always feel good, however it is discomforting to feel I am going through the motions.

You might think of prayer as a way of doing an
"upscope" to try to get yourself oriented to the
real situation and to join with God in relating to
it. In these terms a proper prayer is something
along the lines of "What is Thy Will?" or
"What would it be best for me to do?" or maybe just "What
now?" Self-oriented prayers (wealth, happiness,
etc.) obviously leave God out and you remain
submerged on your own.
Give it a thought...
