Freedom Fest-2003
Goshen Air Show

July 5, 2003, I attended the Goshen, Indiana, annual air show for the first time. I didn't know what to expect. I love aircraft and once attended flight school. After 25 hours dual instruction, 22 hours solo flight, and a passing grade on the FAA written exam, finances finally forced me out. But, boy, I still love aircraft.

The show was great! There were many unique aircraft. The USAF west coast A-10 Thunderbolt II demonstration team was in attendance and showed a wonderfull historical tribute to USAF flight when an A-10 Warthog flew in formation with a P-51 Mustang. A B-25, a fleet of AT-6 Texans, a Pitts Special stunt biplane, a Super Stearman complete with wing-walker, and even a MiG 17 and MiG 21 flew that day. Of course, there were more including the Indiana Skydiving Team, a 36,000-hp jet truck that raced down the runway at 321 mph, and a giant fire-breathing, car eating, transforming robot machine. There was also a classic car show and helicopter rides. Oh, and they wrapped up the evening with a fantastic fireworks display by the Mad Bomber. It began with fountains that spewed forth their glory more than three hundred feet into the air and proceeded into a chest pounding arial display.

I've been to many airshows, mostly military, but this one was very different. It was more like an air carnival with lots of great food. Most of the performers were civilian pilots that tour the country doing this stuff. They're pros. A spectacular display was the Lima-Lima Team, the only six person/aircraft civilian formation flight team in the world, performing during both the daylight and the night sky!

I plan to again fuel my desire later this month in Dayton, OH. On July 17, 18, 19, 20 in Dayton, Ohio, will be a fantastic airshow. They will have, for the first time ever anywhere, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, and the Canadian Snow Birds. Check it out!
