SPECIAL OLYMPICS BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Tomorrow on Saturday, October 20, twenty KATS members will be volunteering at the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament.  We will assist and keep score for disabled bowlers.  The tournament is held at AMF Bowling Lanes, 8788 Metcalf Avenue, from 7:45 AM -1 PM.   Permission slips were given out to the first twenty students to sign up.    Remember, for those going on this field trip, students need to provide their own transportation and money for snacks.  Participants will receive up to 10 KATS signatures.  KATS members will receive one additional signature for bringing two dozen cookies to the bowling alley.

RED RIBBON WEEK

To prepare for Red Ribbon Week, KATS members will be decorating the outside of the school on Sunday, October 21, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.  Students who help will receive three KATS signatures.  Please come directly to Room 16.  KATS members will receive one additional signature for bringing a treat to share.

Red Ribbon Week is October 22-26.  The PTA will be running contests and promoting drug abuse awareness during the week.  This week is also Trailridge Spirit Week.  Monday is “Double Up Against Drugs Day” and students may dress like a friend that day. Tuesday is “Put a Cap on Drugs Day.”  Students may wear hats in the hallways on Tuesday, October 23.  Wednesday is “Team Up Against Drugs Day.”  Students are encouraged to wear their favorite team’s shirt to school on Wednesday.  Thursday is “Put Drugs to Sleep Day.”  Students may wear PJ pants and/or Trailridge spiritwear to school on Thursday, October 25.  Friday is “Orange and Black Day.”  Students are encouraged wear clothing with orange and/or black to school on Friday, October 26.

AMERICAN ROYAL STARS FIELD TRIP

The first thirty members who became stars are going to the American Royal on Tuesday, October 23.  We will be volunteering our time to assist school age groups as they tour the various exhibits.  We will also have the opportunity to see the Children’s Rodeo.  Please bring your lunch or money for a drink or lunch at Kemper Arena.  We will leave Trailridge at 8:00 AM and return at 3:30 PM.  All assignments must be made up.  Please bring money for lunch (Kemper is expensive!) and wear your KATS  Stars T-shirt.

KATS STARS T-SHIRTS

Stars may order a t-shirt to wear for KATS events.  It would be really great if everyone had one for the American Royal field trip.  The cost is $7 for a short sleeve shirt and $10 for a long sleeve shirt.  Various colors are available.

SAFE-SCARE

On Halloween, Wednesday, October 31, from 4:45 -7:00 PM, volunteers are needed for Shawnee Safe-Scare in Westbrook Village.  KATS members will pass out candy, judge the costume contest, and maybe help paint faces.  KATS members who sign up in Room 17 will receive 1 signature for every thirty minutes of volunteering.  Dress up in a costume (not scary) for one more signature.

STUDENT EXCHANGE

Several KATS members will hopefully have an opportunity to visit other middle schools this year.  We are planning one or two visits, which will include six students each.  You must be a Star to participate.  During each exchange, KATS members are needed to be hosts for our visitors from these schools.  Please turn in your applications to Mrs. Key if you are interested in being an exchange student or a host.

KATS CARDS

KATS workers are needed Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings at 8:00 A.M., Tuesdays after school until 4:35 P.M. in Room 16, and Thursdays after school in Room 17.  You do not have to let anyone know you are coming; just come in and we’ll put you to work.  But please try to come in at 8:00 am so you can work thirty minutes and get a full signature.  Each time you work for thirty minutes, be sure to get your KATS card signed.  When the card is filled, you become a KATS Star, and you are eligible for field trips and special parties.  Your KATS card is your pass to be in the halls before 8:30 A.M.  Carry it in your hand.  Please do not use your locker before 8:30 A.M.  Your KATS card is not a locker pass.

STUDY HALL

Students who assist teachers during study hall receive a half of a signature each time they work no matter how many minutes they volunteer.  Trailridge has made a commitment to read every other day for twenty minutes.  KATS members should be participating in DEAR.

****STARS

Any student who has turned in a completed KATS card should check the bulletin board outside the library to see if his/her name is on a star.  Please inform Mrs. Keeton if your name is missing.  Congratulations to all new KATS STARS – Andrew Bateman, Tara Chase, Ashley Currin, Melissa Egger, Griffin Epperson, Sarah Hansen, Yin-Wen Huynh, Frances Johnson, Lauren Komer, Jessica Leichter, Brandon McCoy, Clair McKay, Bryan Mohling, Jessica Nguyen, Gabby Rehor, Morgan Smith, Abigael Striker, Kaylee Trost, Paige Waltman, Chloe Weishaar, and Jacqueline Young.   Way to Go!

KATS MEETINGS

General meetings for all KATS members are held during the school day.  Students are responsible for finding out what has been assigned and for making up all work promptly.  Students must have a KATS card and their teachers’ permission to attend.

The next KATS meeting is Thursday, November 8, during the second half of 8th hour.  KATS members need their card to attend.
