JUMP ROPE/HOOPS FOR HEART

Thanks to all the students who helped with our Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart fundraiser for the American Heart Association.  Donations need to be turned into Mrs. Keeton by Thursday, March 13.  Please remember that if you don't turn yours in on time, no one will receive prizes until it's done.

TOPEKA PAGES

On January 31, Kate Tarne and Tara Chase served as pages for Representative Jill Quigley.  Their mothers accompanied them to Topeka.  Kate said that her favorite part of the day was climbing to the top of the capitol building.  Tara first said that her favorite part was having her picture taken with Governor Sebelius.  After thinking about it, though, she decided that it was also the climb.  KATS will be sending four more students to Topeka in April.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES

·        Athletic Shoe Drive – The SMNW Key Club, a community service club, is sponsoring an athletic shoe drive in February.  The shoes will go to www.oneworldrunning.org .  We are looking for “near-new” athletic shoes, including soccer cleats.  Please bring your donations to Room 17.

·        Cub Scout Pack 3297 is looking for volunteers to assist at their Blue and Gold Banquet on Sunday, February 17, at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School from 3 6:30 PM.  KATS will earn seven signatures and a Chinese dinner.  See Mrs. Ramsey to sign up. You must provide your own transportation.

·        The Trailridge PTA needs volunteers to assist with the Family Dinner on Thursday, February 21, from 5:30-7:30 PM in Trailridge’s gym.  See Mrs. Ramsey to sign up.

·        Bridging the Gap is looking for volunteers on Saturday, February 23, 10 AM to 2 PM, to help sort recycled materials at 11921 Hardy (Between Antioch & Metcalf, right behind the fire station).

REWARD PARTY

During the second half of first hour on Thursday, February 28, there will be a reward party for any KATS member who has three or more signatures in 2008.    To be able to attend the party you must fill out an order slip so we know how many donuts to order.  Please give the order slip to Mrs. Ramsey or Mrs. Key by Monday, February 25.   Then you will be given a special KATS pass to attend the party.  All work missed must be made up immediately.

CROWN CENTER FIELD TRIP

Friday, February 29, KATS Stars with six signatures or more since November 15 will go to Crown Center in Kansas City.  The cost is $6.00 plus money for dinner.  We will go skating at Crown Center’s ice rink after school.  Then we will eat dinner at Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant.  There might even be time to do some window-shopping.  KATS will pay for the bus.  Skates are included in the rental fee.  We will return to Trailridge at 7:00 PM.  Please see Ms. Colburn for a permission slip.

SPRING CLEANING CLOTHES DRIVE

From now until Spring Break, be sure to make a pile of clothes (especially jeans) that you no longer wear.  After Spring Break, the PTA and KATS will be collecting clothes for the Shawnee Mission PTA Clothing Center.  Clothes are mainly for students; although adult sizes will be accepted.  Jeans are really in demand.  Please bring your donations to Room 17.

KATS STARS

Any student who has turned in a completed KATS card should check the bulletin board outside the library to see if their name is on a star.  If you would like to order a t-shirt, please talk to Ms. Colburn.  Also please inform Mrs. Keeton if your name is missing from the Stars bulletin board.  There are now 55 KATS Stars.  Our Top Stars so far are Johnny Tong, Shannon Knoll, Brianna Clayton, Alyx Stephenson, Kate Tarne, Megan Robinson, Brandon McCoy, Tara Chase, Savannah Bell, Jessica Nguyen, Shanna McCormick, and Kylie Lambeth.

NATIONAL SERVICE CHALLANGE

The President's Student Service Challenge is a White House initiative, which recognizes young Americans with awards and scholarships for outstanding community service, while encouraging more young people to serve.  Middle school students who contribute at least 50 hours of service to the community are eligible for the new Bronze Award. If you work 75 or more hours you will receive the Silver Award and if you volunteer 100 hours or more you earn the Gold Award.

The President's Student Service Challenge is intended to recognize, reward, and encourage activities that have a significant impact in meeting the needs of local communities. Types of service could include: service with community or religious organizations, service through school or community-based service learning projects, and individual efforts to help others and improve the local community.  KATS work, of course, counts too!

Please get a form from Mrs. Keeton to keep track of your hours worked outside of school.  In order to be counted in this school year, all forms are due at the end of April.

ÞThe next Leadership Meeting is Thursday, March 6, at 8:05 AM in Room 113.  Only Stars may attend Leadership Meetings.

ÞThe next general meeting is Thursday, March 13.
