Have You Grabbed a Buddy Lately?

In order to increase interest in KATS and to have fun, we are starting a Grab a Buddy program.  KATS members who go to the MPR and ask another student to volunteer before school will get 2 signatures that morning.  The KATS member and the new worker will both get a cookie coupon from Mrs. Ramsey.

Family Read-In Night At Benninghoven Elementary

Volunteers are needed on Friday, April 18, at Benninghoven Elementary School.  KATS will help with setting up, serving and cleaning up at the annual Family Read-In.  Students are needed to work from 5:30 PM – 9:00 PM. Please report to Mrs. Wartko in the MPR. You will receive seven signatures.

Global Youth Services Day Field Trip

Across the nation, students will be participating in volunteering April 25-27.  National Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world, engaging millions of young Americans and focusing national attention on the amazing leadership of young people. KATS will participate in this event by volunteering at Operation Iraqi Children on Friday, April 25.

All KATS Stars will have the opportunity to prepare school supply kits for shipment to Iraq at the OIC warehouse in Kansas City, Missouri. We will have lunch at Pizza Street ($5.00) afterwards.  Permission slips and money are due to Ms. Colburn by Thursday, April 17.  All assignments must be made up.  If you did not receive a permission slip at today’s meeting, please see Ms. Colburn.

Annoying Song Fundraiser

On Monday, April 28 - Friday, May 2, KATS will sponsor an Annoying Song Fundraiser.  Songs will be played over and over until we raise $1000.  Students can stop the annoying song by contributing money.  The money will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for research to discover a cure for this inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.  KATS members are needed to walk around the cafeteria to collect the money.

Pop Tops for Ronald McDonald House

The last day to donate pop tabs is Friday, May 2.  The aluminum is sold for recycling and the money goes to Ronald McDonald House, a "home away from home" for families of children with serious illnesses who are undergoing treatment at local hospitals.  When your box is full bring it to Room 17 and get another box.  There is also container in the MPR for pop tabs.

National Service Challenge

The President's Student Service Challenge is a White House initiative which recognizes young Americans with awards and scholarships for outstanding community service.  Middle school students who contribute at least 50 hours of service to the community by Thursday, May 1 are eligible for the Silver Award.  Students who have volunteered 75 hours will receive the Bronze Award, and volunteers with 100 hours or more will be given the Gold Award.  Congratulations to the following KATS Stars who already have earned an award:  Brianna Clayton, Shannon Knoll, Bryan Mohling, Megan Robinson, Alyx Stephenson, Kate Tarne, Johnny Tong.

Cystic Fibrosis Walk

All students and their families are encouraged to walk in the Heart of America Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides Walk on Saturday, May 3.  We will meet at Shawnee Mission Park, Shelter 8, at 9:00 AM.  The walk begins at 10:00 AM and is followed by lunch.  Students who come without a parent should pick up a permission slip in Room 17.  KATS is suggesting a minimum donation of $5.00.  Checks should be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  Please contact Mrs. Ramsey if you have questions.
