Ramcharan strikes for the 8th.time

Raymond Ramcharan

Raymond Ramcharan, 36, seems to be getting better with age at winning the National Duathlon Championship crown.

On Sunday, October 14, Ramchie, as he popularly known, once again dominated the annual race around the Queen's Park Savannah, beating 28 seniors (down from 35 last year), in 1:02.22, about a minute faster than last year. This victory will make it eight straight for the veteran road racing cyclist, who has been wining this race since it began in 1993. (There was no race in 1997.)

Second to Ramchie once again was National Triathlon champion, Jason Gooding, 22, who covered the 2.2km run/ 13.2km cycle/ 2.2 km run in 1:04.28. In third sport was Mark Thomas, 36, who finished in 1:03.28.

Seven time national duathlon queen, Diane Henderson, 40, was finally dethroned by American ex-patriate Catherine Looger, 45, who covered the same course in 1:18.25.

The winning juniors (who race only one lap of the savannah) were Akini Pierre , 15, in 10 minutes and among the girls, Cherise Brown, 16, in 13.32 was the winner.

The youngest participant was six-year old Shari Thomas (a girl) who finished the one lap even in 21.23, with a determined glare on her face.
