National Triathlon champion, Jason Gooding, 22,
racing unbeaten locally for the past five years, stamped his
name as winner of the inaugural San Fernando Triathlon on Sunday
in 2:13.22.
Racing on a brand new course which began in the
calm, clear waters of the Gulf of Paria in front of the First
Presentation Scout House, Gooding was out of the 1,600
meter swim mere seconds behind arch-rival Andrew Eligon, 29. But
Gooding's transition to the bike was so fast, he was able to
cycle about 100 meters before Eligon could get started. That was
the last any of the 20 competitors would see of Gooding during
the race.
Surprise of the day was Special Olympian, Ancil
Greene, who, in spite of a slow swim, was able to make up time
on the 39.5 km bike-leg, and virtually fly past five triathletes,
including Eligon, on the 10km, to finish second 2:26.50.
Eligon faded on the run to finish in a tired
third spot in 2:30.29.
In fourt spot was swimming coach Michael
Nyarko.
In the women's event, New Zealander Briar Harvie won in
2:55.51. with Barbadian Christine Choy, second and Eva Neemar, who fell
twice, finished in a heroic third place.
The junior event was dominated by Barbadians Joshua Ward
and Alexis Jordan, with Akini Pierre, third and Jason Foncette, fourth.
The team relay event was won by Flavian Lee Ha (swimmer),
David Alves (cyclist) and Noel Nero (runner). Second place saw Christian
Aleong, Joshua Alexander and Ron Julien and Third were the BWIA Flyboyz, Raual
Viera, Ako Kellar, and Herdis Andrews.
Gooding will next challenge the triathletes of Martinique
on December 9.
