| Here is an interview with Kelly from Anime and Hentai besotted one man Noisegrind/Harsh Noise frenzy Princess Army Wedding Combat Baz - Welcome to the fierce smelling Traumatized toilet cubicle! How are you? Please tell us about your band, for example when did you first decide the charm the underground with such raucous outbursts of dischord, and what was it that inspired and influenced you? Kelly - Mighty Hails! I am doing quite well, thanks. Well, what can I say -- basically Princess Army is my lil' one-man noisecore [or noisegrind or whatever] project that has a heavy slant to the realms of Japanese animation...hehehe, it is kind of a silly idea, I know, but I don't know really, it just sort of happened... and it's a bit too late to drop it now. It all began about 2 years ago (I THINK) when I decided to record some songs on my own with my 4-track. They were pretty standard grindcore ditties, but the lyrics were about how I thought this-and-that Anime character was cute and such.. and well, from there, after I was introduced to more underground noise/noisecore bands, and after being asked to be on a split tape, Princess Army started to take shape. And well, yeah, that's it... As far as influences go, I'd say it's a bit of Gore Beyond Necropy, C.S.S.O., Rectal Leak, uhhh...Libido Airbag, a smidgen of Savage Man Savage Beast [or basically any other drum-machine grind unit], some random blippy techno stuff, Nintendo music...and well, some other things I can't think of now. Inspiration comes a lot from watching Anime...tee hee, what a surprise. More specifically, the cuter side of Anime...the girly love-comedies, magical girls, lolitas, mobile-suit girls, etc... Also, Hentai, dating-sims, J-pop...ummmm... I guess I draw influences from other places but that doesn't happen too often. ^_^ Baz - Please provide us with the current Princess Army Wedding Combat discography, along with a brief commentary for each release. From the list, which of your creations are you most pleased with? Kelly - * [Not Out Yet]: Assface x Princess Army - split tape * This would be the first Princess Army material to be sent out for release. It pretty much sets the stage for what my junk sounds like now, though it may sound a bit more grindy than noisy. I wish it would get release ~_~ * 3 tracks on Ultimate Onslaught Comp #1 * 3 lil' tracks that have always been favourites of mine * Basket of Death x Princess Army split - cd-r * This is basically the template now. Cute intros, noisecore stuff, lame techno beats, messy guitar noise, gurgly vocals and some silly Nintendo song clips stuck in here and there * Groyxo x Princess Army split - cd-r More experimental than previous stuff. I just kinda sat down and did whatever. Not my favourite stuff, but it was pretty fun to do. * Akaknue x Princess Army - cd-r Kind of trying to get back to basics after the Groyxo split. 40 solid noisecore splurts and 20 short noise tracks. * Upcoming : There should also be a couple comp appearances within the next couple of months. Baz - What equipment do you use? Kelly - It's almost all digital. All freeware and demos of drum machines and mixers and such. The only outside instruments I use are my guitar and vocals Baz - Your songs and imagery utilize considerable amounts of Japanese artwork, such as Anime. When did you first become a fan of such illustrations? Kelly - I first got interested in Anime about 8 years ago in middle school. I saw it on Sci-Fi Channel late one night and it all went downhill from there. Later on, I met some kids in high school who were into Anime as well, and started going to conventions with them and stuff, and yeah, here I am now... ^_^ Baz - I understand you inhabited the now disbanded lo-fi Boredcore act Lobster Assualt. Upon which instrument did you commit heinous acts of wankery, whom would you quote as seminal influences on the band and can a messy exhumation of its repugnant remants be expected? Kelly - Hehehe, I was behind the drums for half the time. We had two drummers, so when the other one wanted to play, I would do backing vocals. Although I would always say "yeah, Lobster Assault is noisecore!", it was pretty much false. I'd say we had the attitude of a noisecore band, but we were just kinda like a sloppy and silly black metal band... "Boredcore" works too I guess, hehehehe! Influences included Pile of Eggs, old Emperor, and Anal Cunt...for the most part. As for the unearthing of palatable piles of putridness : in the spirit of Emperopr, I couldn't let the Lobster die after we called it quits. I have about 60-something rehearsal tapes sitting in a box, so making some post-mortem split tapes wasn't too hard. However, the upcoming 4-way split with Worms, ImBored and God's Favourite Band will be the final release ever (and I mean it this time!) Baz - Other than Princess Army Wedding Combat and Lobster Assault, you and your fellow band members are involved in a number of solo and group side projects, such as Crusty, Crusty Grindtones, Squid Muggings and Crushed Scrotum. Please tell us more about these side projects, as well as any other outfits you play in besides. Kelly - Most of the side projects were just Lobster Assault minus one or two members. When someone was sick, or out of town during a Lobster Assualt session, we would just call it something else and sometimes switch instruments. The Crusty Crusty Grindtones stands out as a great side-project we did. I was on guitar, Peter [Lobster's guitarist] was on vocals and Luka [Lobster's 2nd drummer] handled blastbeats. It was nothing but randomly caught TV intros and then blasting mess... Most of the side-project tapes have been either lost or accidentally taped over, but there's a few gems that remain. As far as other bands go, a while after Lobster Assault, this guy I knew in high school and I formed Kill Gabe Stohl. It was improv like Lobster Assault, but much more grindy with a nice touch of sludge. It was great fun! Like Lobster Assault, we would record every week and let anyone participate. Right about now, the future of the band is kinda up in the air. The guy I started it with moved to Los Angeles this summer, and so that leaves me and the two vocalists to fend for outselves. We're still thinking of collecting our best songs and putting out a demo, but the band itself seems kinda defunct for the time being. Click here for the next part of the interview |
