The opening band, gore guzzlers Oxidised Razor, proffer live recordings, cover versions and rare demos, whilst the other, lard loving heavyweights C.A.R.N.E., submit 13 hefty studio tracks.

OXIDISED RAZOR :

Having cut two pus excreting full length albums, Oxidised Razor appear with this collection of rare limbs from their old demos and live vomiting from  Huachiringa Fest '01. After a sample from Texas Chainsaw Massacare, the first pool of gore is a cover of Carcass classick Genital Grinder, seeing a good interpretation of the timeless Goregrind instrumental. Having warmed up the perverted ears of the listener, the set of live songs next begins with Pedro Alonzo Lopez, the great opening song from their debut La Realidad Es Sangrienta.

There's little to be said about the originality or songwriting a lot of the songs entail, seeing as they're either cover versions or have been reviewed elsewhere on the site as part of the albums upon which they originally appear. However, much can be said about the band's live performance skills, feeding off their surroundings, their audience and each other to inject fresh infection into their already disease riddled compositions.

My personal favourites on here include the live version of Shotting Mucous From Intestinal Haemorrhage, a staple blastbeat fiend of a tune from the debut album and the Regurgitate and Cripple Bastards cover songs. The cover of Gut's immortal Wound Fuck is good too, though a little long winded. The demo version of Necrosurgery is a nice bonus, giving these ears a chance to hear an early incarnation of one of their gore anthems.

The band put in a good perfomance on the material featured here, in particular the live material. The lo-fi and fuzzy sleazeball recording of the live material gives the songs a much dirtier vibe, the effects-free vokills now sounding more insane and piglike than ever.

As much as this album is a fun exhumation of decayed Oxidised Razor cadavers of old, I think the material here would be most suited to those already familiar with Oxidised Razor's music. Though they deliver an energetic set of fierce Goregrind, peppering their set with gig friendly covers, I think the songs would fare better with the listener having heard their studio versions first.

C.A.R.N.E. :

Here's flab fanciers C.A.R.N.E with a pack of heavyweight grooves for you to fondle. Formed in 2001, this Mexican trio encroach you with what I belive to be their first recording. Buxom bulges of Porn/Goregrind burst out of this split side. All the usual  mandatory new skool Porngrind features are here : croaky porridge throat vokills, half chug groove/half full on grind, simplistic riffs and token sadomasochistic porn photos in reverse video mode. But who gives a fuck about having piles of originality when the music is as good as this??

The opener is a track entitled C.A.R.N.E, beginning after a sample of some pigs grunting. It starts with a jolting intro of cyclic kick drumming, croaky vokills and fuzz fed chords, before kicking into an unpredicatable mess of disembodied chug, driving blasts and rather catchy vomits. The rest of the tracks bulldoze along in a similar way, with guitars that are chunky yet raggedy round the edges, defaecating flowing riffs that go beyond just repetetive fretboard banging, utilising more than the same two or three notes that a lot of Porn/Gore bands play these days. There's also plenty of squealing pinch harmonics to eat into your brain. Drums are fairly dynamic, often fast, sometimes mid paced but always heavy and crushing. There's a good use of cymbals and hats, but the kick drums sound a bit too clicky and flat, unsuited to songs where they'd be more effective loud and pounding. The vokills are excellent, good and over the top thick, wet and bubbly vokill gurgles. There's not a great deal of effects slopped over them, on some songs it sounds like there's none at all, just natural toilet flush porridge throat inhalation. Though you can't really make out any lyrics, the vokill lines are still catchy as fuck.

C.A.R.N.E's semen stained set of sadistic songs reminds me of one or two other acts, particular German Porngrind bands, for example German perverts
Meatknife, bondage gore overlords Cock and Ball Torture on their split with Disgorge, and German kings Gut. Sperman comparisons aside, C.A.R.N.E's sound is flecked with Negligent Collateral Collapse, even the odd Lymphatic Phlegm leaning in some of the riffs. The guitar tone is kind of reminiscent of early Necrobestiality. Here and there the vokills have a staccatto, slightly choppy style a bit like those of Anal Blast and later Cannibal Corpse.

All the songs on this album are winners but a few particular standouts are Sexxy Fat, with its unstoppable hulking chug, the short and sweet Massive Vaginal Atake, Natural Born Big Tits cos of its punishing grooves and incredibly squelchy vokills that at some points come on like those of
Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition and Negligent Collateral Collapse and Bastardo with it's rhythmic, writhing riffage.

There's some good songwriting skills on show here, with worked, tight song structures. Though some songs could be seen as fairly unpredictable grab bags of riffs, they still flow with more than enough well oiled groove to keep them watertight and robust.

The production is clear enough to hear everything, but still cavernous enough coated in enough grime to create a menacing feel. The film intros used add to the atmopshere, many of them quite unnerving but not overpowering the music.

Overall then, this is an impressive set of songs with plenty of obese groove and corpulent grinding. To say there's only three of them they sure make one heavy racket. Not even the absence of bass guitar slims the songs down any. Just like similar bludgeoning groove three piece Cock and Ball Torture before them, C.A.R.N.E are already showing lots of potential on an early release, like CBT did on Cocktales. Keep an eye out for these lads, I should think there'll be plenty more where this came from.
