The Red Lake
Located halfway between Cairo and Alexandria in Wadi Natroun, the Red Lake is a hyper-salinated pool of water that exists in a string of other salty lakes in the Egyptian desert.  The red color is a by-product of the Phyto-plankton that makes up the only life form to inhabit the water.  This is similar in nature to the Dead Sea between Jordan and Israel/Palestine.  The white salt that settles on the bottom and edges of the lake was harvested in Phaoronic times for use in the mummification process.
