Title: Love Moves in Mysterious Ways Author: Winnie, 1/3/00 Author's Note: I started writing this fanfic a few days before Christmas. I initially planned to put it up by then. But after writing one paragraph after another, I found my imagination running smoothly. And before I knew it, I had woven intertwined events into the story through flashback form. My reservation is that would-be readers will find it hard to follow the story line. Nevertheless, this is my first attempt at writing fanfic. I must say, I still don't have all the "right moves" yet. So feel free to write me about your comments at runaway_lady@yahoo.com. This fanfic was inspired by the Karen Carpenter song, "Merry Christmas Darling". The song tells of how a person wished to spend Christmas with somebody he/she is apart with. However, since the story was completed a few days after the new year, I decided to change the title into yet another song - "Love Moves in Mysterious Ways" by Julia Fordham. I believe this title is more apt. Both songs were used and incorporated in my story as you will notice when you read on. I shall acknowledge the proper owners of the said pieces with no infringement intended on my part. This story was borne out of my own imagination. It may not necessarily follow the episode events presented by David E. Kelley. Disclaimer: The characters used in this story belong to David E. Kelley Productions, 20th Century Fox Productions and ABC Television. Lyrics of the following songs were used: "Love Moves In Mysterious Ways," written by Tom Snow & Dean Pitchford. Sung by Julia Fordham. "Merry Christmas Darling," written by Jack Daugherty. Sung by Karen Carpenter. No infringement intended. Summary: It's Christmas... a saleslady and a diamond necklace may just make someone realize something! Warning: The contents below are intended for Bobby and Lindsay fans. If you feel strongly against them, you are advised not to proceed. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part I The air was a cool winter chill... faces everywhere were smiling, people were rushing to buy gifts. The trees seemed to be greener and the shops were brightly lit and adorned with green and red decors. Christmas songs serenaded every place on earth.... It was that time of year. Bobby walked past Newbury Streets and noticed all the festivities going around. He had been so busy these past few days with major cases he didn't realize that Christmas was fast nearing. But in spite of this, he felt excited just now. There seemed to be a feeling of surprise. He couldn't quite explain it... maybe it was all the gifts and the parties to come - a welcome respite from all the pressures and problems he had been living with for the rest of the year. As Bobby was about to make a turn and go to his car, something caught his eyes. He slowed down a bit and walked to the thing that had caught his attention.... Bobby was so mesmerized with the object that he immediately went inside and asked it from the saleslady to be seen up-close - it was an exquisitely crafted lone diamond nestled within a thin gold necklace. It was so simple yet elegant - things that reminded him of her. This was just so perfect for her, he thought. And on impulse, Bobby quickly said, "I'll take it" and handed his credit card to the saleslady. After a few minutes, the saleslady returned holding a neatly wrapped Tiffany package. Just when he was about to walk out, he heard her say, "You must love her very much to not look at the price at all. Oh, but then what is money so long as you can see the twinkle in her eyes and the smile on her lips. Merry Christmas, Mister." Bobby was taken aback by what she said, but he just smiled and quickly left the store. When he was inside his car, he stopped and analyzed what had just happened - within fifteen minutes, he had spent an amount which he had no idea how much, and on something he realized right now he didn't know how to give her. What did I do? No doubt she will be beautiful in this, but... what right do I have in giving her this? Then Bobby remembered what the saleslady said - "You must love her very much to not look at the price at all. Oh, but then what is money so long as you can see the twinkle in her eyes and the smile on her lips...." And he smiled as he nodded... but he was bothered... "You must love her very much to not look at the price at all." Do I really love her??? Unresolved and feeling confused, he started the car engine and drove away. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Lindsay was dressed up and about ready for the party tonight at the Donnell, Young, Dole and Frutt office. She stood in the middle of the living room wearing a tight-fitting black cocktail dress in a spaghetti strap with a low horizontal neckline. The dress stretched just below her knee and highlighted her sexy legs. She complemented her outfit with a light sheer make-up. Her hair was neatly held in place by a tiny diamond pin. She was all aglow, or so others would think, but inside she felt empty and alone... she hated to admit it, but she recognized a longing for somebody she could never be with... With resignation, she opened her radio and stopped tuning when she heard the voice of Karen Carpenter singing a Christmas carol. She liked Karen Carpenter... she especially liked her Christmas songs - it gave her a feeling of warmth and home. Greeting cards have all been sent The Christmas rush is through But I still have one wish to make A special one for you Merry Christmas Darling We're apart that's true But I can dream And in my dreams I'm Christmasting with you She thought of Bobby and how she wished they could be together.... Her mind slowly drifted back to last Christmas.... *She lay cuddled in Bobby's arms while they both peacefully gazed at the fireplace. They had made love then under the Christmas tree. It was pure bliss.* But this year... a lot had happened, more importantly, that Bobby was no longer with her. He now belonged to Helen. Stopping all thoughts of Bobby, Lindsay quickly turned off the radio, grabbed her car keys and headed out the door. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part II Everyone was in a festive mood at the office of Donnell, Young, Dole and Frutt. Ellenor and Jimmy were dancing to the tune of the "Christmas Waltz" while Eugene and Rebecca were talking and laughing. Bobby was in his office caught up with some last minute paper works. Suddenly, the door to his office flung open. It was Helen. "Hey, nice party... everyone seems to be in a festive mood. Nice change, no shouting or angry stares...." she said as she walked towards Bobby's desk. Bobby nodded and smiled, "Yeah, need to leave all that stuff behind for the moment I suppose.... I thought your office is having a party too?" "Yeah... thought I'd drop by to visit you and give you your gift as well," she smiled. "But first, you gotta come here and give me a kiss," she quickly added. Bobby slowly stood up and rounded his desk to stand before Helen. Helen instantly grabbed his face and gave him a long sensuous kiss. Just about this time, someone opened the door and said, "I'm here Bobby, let's start the party." She was frozen for a while with what she saw, while Bobby and Helen were both taken by surprise from the unexpected intrusion. Lindsay quickly apologized and was about to close the door when Helen said, "Hey, no need to be embarrassed. We still have our clothes on." To this, Lindsay said, "Helen," implying her to stop and it was not funny. Bobby looked uncomfortably and for a while he quietly stared at Lindsay. "Besides, I am going anyway. But before I do, where is my gift, Bobby?" Helen turned to him as she stretched her hand to receive it. Bobby obediently walked back to his desk and from his drawer pulled a tiny box. Helen could not contain her excitement as she reached for it. She then said, "I'll open it later at your place. See ya." And with that she walked towards the door and gave Lindsay a wink just before she headed out. Suddenly, Lindsay and Bobby were all alone in the room. It felt awkward, and Lindsay broke the silence by saying, "...am sorry, am late... we better start...." Bobby was staring at her intently. God, she is so beautiful tonight, he thought. She looked like a little girl with all innocence surrounding her, remembering the way she looked when she saw him with Helen. She seemed so fragile, he thought, like she would break anytime now. Bobby wanted so much to hold her but wondered whether she would break with so much as a single touch from him. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Lindsay was finding it hard to last through the night. She was on the verge of breaking down. Oh, why do I have to see it? ... she wanted to just go home and cry her heart out. But she knew she would be obvious, especially to Bobby. She had a feeling that when that blue, blue eyes of his stared at her, it could see her soul inside out. That's a curse, she silently said to herself. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Ellenor was the first one to hand her presents, and everyone followed. Lindsay excitedly gave her gifts to everybody including Bobby who seemed lost in thought as he received his present. And when it was Bobby's turn, he stopped just when he should be handing his gift to Lindsay. "I...I...Lindsay, I still haven't thought of what to give you... You have to forgive me... I'll make it up soon...." Bobby said apologetically. Suddenly, silence enveloped the whole place. Everyone stopped and looked stunned. How could Bobby forget, they all thought. He could have grabbed anything instead of creating this awkward situation. Rebecca could not contain her annoyance and said, "Bobby Donnell, how could you! You know that Lindsay is one of the easiest person to please... you could have grabbed a Vanilla donut and she would still be happy she would thank high heavens for it!" After a while, everybody broke into laughter upon realizing the statement Rebecca just made. Lindsay smiled too, recognizing the fact that she indeed liked Vanilla donut so much and that everybody seemed to be aware of it. By this time, the tension eased a little. Lindsay downplayed the situation by saying, "It's okay Bobby, but I shall be expecting an expensive present to make up for the delay." There was a glint of hurt in her eyes even as she said it. She was trying hard not to look at Bobby as he looked at her intently. Deep inside, she was really hurting. She wanted nothing more than to cry. --------------------------------------------------------------------- It was breaking Bobby's heart to have embarrassed Lindsay this way. Why does he have to hurt her always, he thought. She definitely doesn't deserve this. But how could he give her her present before these people? ...That is if he would have the courage to give it to her at all. What would they think? What are they after all? You just don't give your associate an expensive diamond necklace even on Christmas. And what would Lindsay think? She may be so shocked as to accept his gift to her. And then there is Helen. How will I explain it to her then? Bobby sighed as he suddenly realized what buying the diamond necklace was really causing him. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Tears were dripping down Lindsay eyes as she drove home. She felt so unloved.... She never expected Bobby to be so insensitive. We have shared something too, he could have at least shown a little more compassion, why, yeah, even a piece of Vanilla donut can make me happy. Damn him, she thought to herself. She was now really crying out loud inside her car as she remembered Bobby giving Helen her gift. As soon as she went home, she collapsed on her bed and tried to block the thought that Bobby and Helen might be making love now... and cried herself to sleep. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part III It was the 23rd of December, the last day of work for the year in the office of Donnell, Young, Dole and Frutt. Bobby came in early to the office. He could not sleep last night. He was so lost in thought... as he gazed outside his office window, he drifted and drifted.... *He kept pacing his room, he missed her so much... "I am hopelessly at her mercy, and I should not let her know what effect she is having on me," he determinedly said out loud. Oh, but he was losing the battle.... Bobby decided to call Lindsay in her parents house. "Hey, Bobby here..." "Hi... is there something wrong?" Lindsay sounded alarmed. "No, just want to ask how you're doing...." "I see, good. And you?" "Not bad...." That's a lie, I've been miserable without you, Bobby silently added. "Good." "Are you having fun?" "Yeah, my parents have lined up so many activities for me," Lindsay laughingly said. Just then Bobby heard someone called Lindsay, the voice of a man. "Lindsay, hurry up, we'll be late." "Yeah, be there." Another voice was heard saying, "John dear, did you call Lindsay?" Bobby alarmingly suspected the voice belonged to John Farell, Lindsay's ex-boyfriend who belonged to the old rich and worked for the Ivy League firm across the streets from his office... an embodiment of someone Bobby hated so much. John and Lindsay's families were close friends. "Is that John Farell?" Bobby quickly asked Lindsay. "uh... um... yeah, my parents invited him... um.... Bobby I have to go now, talk to you later. Bye." And before Bobby could say a word, the line was already cut. After talking to Lindsay, he felt he missed her all the more... and he was furious to know that John Farell, Lindsay's ex was with her. He felt jealous with that thought.... --------------------------------------------------------------------- He could not bear it anymore. That night, he dialed Lindsay's room number. "Hi, me... Bobby...." "Bobby! Hi... are you okay? ... you seemed strange...." "Lindsay, I have a big favor to ask you... um... um...." "Yes... Bobby?" "Ah...um... I know you need to spend time with your family this Christmas... um... aah... um... truth is I mi...miss... you so much...." Lindsay's lips formed into a wide smile upon hearing this. "... um, I feel kinda lonely... you know... how Christmas makes me feel... um... aah, do you think it is possible... for you... um... to come back and uh... spend it with me?" Lindsay was speechless, she was totally not expecting such honesty from Bobby. She felt like she was floating on air. "Lindsay? ... still there?" Lindsay had a sheepish grin. "Yeah... here... still here...." "Please...." Bobby shyly begged. "I'll see what excuse I can come up with, but no promises." "Really? Great, thanks." Bobby was now grinning ear to ear. "Okay then... bye." Lindsay felt so excited, truth was she wanted nothing more than to be with him... she also missed him so much. With that she tried to think what good excuse to give her parents. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part IV Damn, Bobby thought to himself.... This is the second time within today that I am taking a shower. Bobby wanted so much to feel Lindsay's skin against his, to touch her and make love to her all night through. He turned off the shower and tried to get his towel. It wasn't there... he remembered very well that he hanged it just when he entered the bathroom. He decided to just head to his room in all his naked glory. He was squinting his eyes with the water dripping his face when he saw a woman who looked like Lindsay, holding a towel and standing before him.... It was Lindsay! God, how I missed her, he thought. He was grinning like a big boy.... Bobby grabbed Lindsay immediately and kissed her with so much passion and longing. Lindsay was gasping for air and soaking wet when he was finished kissing her. "Are you really here?" Bobby asked, finding it hard to believe that Lindsay was in his arms. "No, I am just a figment of your imagination," to which Bobby responded with a huge smile and kissed her again. --------------------------------------------------------------------- And they had made love, over and over again... Bobby couldn't seem to get enough of her. By the time they finished making love, Bobby wrapped his arms tightly against Lindsay's waist as she lay with her back against his chest. His eyes were close and he had a foolish grin. He kissed her forehead lovingly... "What did you tell your parents?" he asked. "I told them that our senior partner, Mr. Bobby Donnell was charged with sexual harassment by one of our colleagues and that I need to bail him out." "You didn't?!" Bobby blurted, obviously not buying her alibi. "Yes I did," Lindsay smugly said as she sat up and turned to look at him. "Okay then...." Bobby had on a devilish grin. He was giving Lindsay a teasing-threat look, as if to tell her, don't tempt me. But of course, it was all a ploy, for regardless, Bobby was ready to attack his victim. He started to tickle her. "Bobby... stop it... Bobby, aaah...uh... Bobby! ...stop it!" Lindsay was giggling and shouting. After a while, Bobby stopped and pulled her to him, her back facing him. He was smooching her neck and cheek.... Then he whispered to her ear, "I'd gladly go to jail if my victim was you." "Fine," Lindsay turned to look at him, "I'll file a case first day of work." Bobby smiled, then kissed her lips long and hard, as they both collapsed to bed and made love again. Bobby felt so happy... He had never felt so happy with anyone than Lindsay. He enjoyed being with her. She made him laugh... frankly he never knew how before Lindsay came to work for him. Even before they became intimate, Lindsay always passed by his office and asked how he was doing. They shared a special friendship that had developed into a strong affection for each other. And then of course, it had gone on further into intimacy.... He had to admit he was attracted to her the very first time she walked into his office. He remembered when he first saw her... he could sense something special about her and that she would have an impact on his life....* --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part V "Bobby... Bobby? Bobby?" Rebecca repeatedly called his attention. Bobby was then brought back from his reverie of Christmas past with Lindsay. "Yeah...." "You okay?" "Yeah, sure, why? What's the matter?" "I am heading out to buy some food, would you like me to pick something for you?" "Umm, what time is it?" "It's close to 12 o'clock...." "Oh... is Lindsay around?" He spoke his thought out loud, and was surprised upon hearing himself asked. "Why?" Rebecca curiously asked, sensing something was wrong. She felt it strange that Bobby would ask about Lindsay when they didn't have any cases together these past few weeks. Besides, she knew that Lindsay left no work undone before going on leave. She always felt though that Bobby had an affection towards Lindsay. He liked and cared for her in his own way, maybe much more than he thought. He might be in love with her... either he was stupid enough to realize it or he knew but was so scared to admit it to himself, much more to Lindsay. But he was right now with Helen.... "Nothing," Bobby answered still stunned that he actually thought of Lindsay that much as to ask about her out of the blue. "Lindsay is not coming today, didn't you know? She is going to Cambridge to spend Christmas with her parents." "Oh, I didn't know... she didn't tell me." "You've been busy...." Rebecca gave him the look, implying that he had been preoccupied with among other things, Helen for the past few months. "Why, you even forgot to buy her a present." Rebecca couldn't help but say. As Rebecca closed the door, Bobby sat motionless, lost in thought... Lindsay was gone, how could he not know... she was again spending Christmas with her parents, just like last year... only then he called her up and begged her to spend Christmas with him.... I am already missing her, he sighed. He then thought of the gift Lindsay gave him last night. He slowly pulled open his desk drawer and removed a small package wrapped in gold and green papers and adorned with a red ribbon. He swiftly tore the gift wrapper and opened the box to reveal a beautifully crafted set of cuff links. It was done simply with sapphire stone and set in gold. *"Where's the button?" Bobby was frantically looking around his couch where he and Lindsay had just finished making love. "What? Bobby, hurry up we will be late. What are you looking?" Lindsay was busy putting her clothes on. "It's my sleeve's button, must have lost it... when you were trying to break it free 'coz you could not wait to see me naked. Bobby was teasing her now. "I did not. You could not wait to undress for me, you should say," Lindsay defensively said. "Come here." "We'll be late." "I said, come here Lindsay." Bobby spoke authoritatively. Lindsay obediently heeded his call and sat beside him on the couch. "Now, what do I do? I have to be in court and I am lousy with this sleeve hanging open...." Bobby was talking so close to her and looking at her endearingly. Lindsay reached for his collar and fixed his shirt, "Well, I think you would still look good, besides that sleeve wouldn't be obvious once you have your chic Armani suit on. I'll just buy you cuff links. Would that make up for my clumsiness?" "Hmm... that's better... but promise you would put it on." "Promise." Lindsay said much like a mother giving her word to her son. Then Bobby kissed her tenderly.* She remembered, he thought... even when that promise was made a long time ago, almost a year, when they were still having their "relationship of convenience". And of course, afterwards he got attracted to Helen and started dating her up until now. Lately, he noticed that Lindsay had been avoiding him... trying hard not to talk to him unless needed. He missed having a nice, casual conversation with her - she would always say something that would ease up the tension and pressures he was facing... she somehow tried to pull him off his work when it was too much for him. And when they had the affair, she was his refuge when the weight of his work had taken a toll on him. But all that was gone when he chose Helen.... But I never made a decision, he reasoned to himself. She decided for me when she pushed me to her. I had wished then she would stop me and tell me that she did care for me. "Oh, what am I thinking???" Bobby said out aloud and shook his head up. "Hey Bobby, what are you doing?" Lucy looked surprised with Bobby's actions. "Uh, na... nothing, what do you want?" Bobby was surprised with the unexpected presence of Lucy in his office. "Are you sure you're okay?" "Why, yeah...." "You just seemed preoccupied lately, you know... sure this has nothing to do with Lindsay?" "Whoa, where did that come from?" Bobby hadn't expected the truth to come out aloud. "Bobby you can fool everyone else but you can't fool me... I can sense when something is going on, and most of the time I know where it's coming." "Lucy!" "You like her don't you?" "Lucy, this is none of your business." "They said you used to sleep with her." Lucy continued oblivious to Bobby's warning. "Who said that?" Lucy ignored Bobby. "What's stopping you?" "Excuse me???" Bobby was shocked because this was Lindsay's very word when she asked him about Helen. "I think you are perfect for each other. I may be stupid but I know that when you love somebody you let that person know how you feel before it's too late. Life is short you know... I'd rather risk looking a fool than not being able to let the other person know how much he means to me. Besides, how many times do you get to meet somebody that is a perfect match to you? You'd be lucky if you bump into that person once in your lifetime. Others wander this earth and leave without ever finding that person. If you are worried about Helen, well, she'll get over you. I am sure she wouldn't want to be with somebody who would be happier with another than her." Bobby was stunned by the lecture he got from Lucy, most of all he looked as if he got the sense in what she said. "Am sorry, I must have said too much...." Lucy was apologetic. "I just want to tell you that if there's nothing else you want me to do, I want to leave early. I have some last minute Christmas shopping to do. I still haven't gotten my boyfriend a gift. Bobby? Bobby?" Bobby was obviously lost in thought. He did not understand what Lucy said afterwards. But he just nodded towards her for whatever it was that she said, and then she quickly disappeared. A sudden awakening mobilized Bobby to make a call. "Helen, Bobby." "Oh, hi Bobby... I was just trying to call you. I want to see you tonight, and maybe we can go to your place afterwards," Helen said suggestively. "Actually I wanted to talk to you about something... I'll pick you up around seven, would that be fine?" "Great, I can't wait." "Bye." "See ya." --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part VI "I've been missing you," Helen spoke first when they were seated to their table. "Helen, I need to talk to you about something...." "Is there something wrong?" Bobby did not answer. "It's about us, right? .... Lately, you've been cold to me... you're avoiding me... like you're confused or something... like you are trying to resolve a conflict within you.... Bobby be honest with me, I deserve it." Bobby looked at her and started to talk.... "I... I like you Helen...." Helen cut him and said, "Oh, cut the bullshit Bobby and spill it out." Bobby looked at her then continued, "I like you but I... I'm in love with somebody else.... I think I have loved her even before I met you... but I was too dumb to realize what I was feeling." Helen was listening intently trying hard to understand him. Bobby looked at her seriously, heaved a sigh and said, "Helen.... I... I'm in love with your best friend." Helen was stilled and slowly said, "Lindsay" as the impact of what Bobby said dawned on her. "She is not to blame, it's me. We had this secret arrangement, that so long as we hadn't met somebody we would keep each other's company. And then I met you. She asked me then what was stopping me with you. And you noticed I seemed stuck, like I wanted to go forward but I wouldn't. When I met you, I was attracted to you. I liked you. But Lindsay and I were having the relationship then, and I was enjoying the time I spent with her. But when she said that we should be together and that we were a perfect match. I was hoping she would tell me that she was jealous or something and that she wanted me to stay, and that she cared for me. But she didn't... she even pushed me to you, and told me to go for it. I thought then that I should be lucky to be cleared from her so easily. She was just so adult about it all. I just accepted it - her decision, now I realized. She said, 'I know what we were and I know what we weren't.' And we were not anything, just two people sharing a bed when the body needed some warmth." Bobby shook his head. "And I had to let go... and I said maybe it's about time to look around and really find somebody suitable. I had to run the circle to realize that... when I was feeling good and whole inside, and I was having the time of my life, the person that was making me feel that way was Lindsay. I never realized then that that was it, and she was the person I was meant to be with." "Does she know?" Helen looked resigned to the fact. "I don't know...." Bobby looked miserable, and continued to shake his head. "I don't know if she cared for me at all... she seemed to have recovered so soon...." "Bobby, what do you expect, you never told her anything. We have pride too, you know," Helen said matter-of-factly. "So what's your plan now?" she asked. "I don't know...." Bobby had his hands on his head as he looked down. "You better know... I talked to Lindsay last night. She told me that John Farell would be in Cambridge too, and she is seriously considering him now." Bobby then looked up, jolted with what he heard. "You know that John's family is a close friend of Lindsay's. And they have a history together." Helen said, reiterating what she assumed Bobby to have already known. "Yeah, I know." Bobby nodded then turned his attention back to Helen. "I am really sorry Helen. I didn't mean to hurt you." "Hey, stop that, this is not a scene from a movie." Bobby smiled and felt relieved. "I knew it, Lindsay and I have always had the same taste in men. We would compete and see who got to date the best guy in campus." Helen laughed as she recalled her college days with Lindsay. "So does that mean I am the "best guy" now?" "Or John Farell, don't be so sure... only Lindsay will know." --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part VII Lindsay looked around her apartment... it was so cold and empty, exactly what she was feeling right now. She was not really looking forward to going home to Cambridge but if she stayed here she would just cry until there were no more tears left in her. She thought she needed some diversion from her present fate. She also wanted to get away from Bobby even if she knew he wouldn't come looking for her anyway. Besides, being here reminded her of the time she spent Christmas with him.... *Bobby had begged her to come back and be with him. She was so excited as she went to Bobby's house and chanced upon him taking a bath. She was really naughty to get his towel and as a result saw him butt naked as he went out of the bathroom. He had grabbed her instantly and without shame that he had no clothes on. He kissed her with so much longing and desire. And they had made love... by the time they were finished she was so wet.... Later, they went to her apartment to get some clothes but decided to stay on and decorate her Christmas tree. They were kissing and hugging and having fun. They cooked dinner together... and made love under the Christmas tree. "Hey, you awake?" Bobby broke the silence as they lay peacefully near the fireplace. "Yeah... why?" "I...I really appreciate you coming back and spending Christmas with me." "That's it?" "What?" "I came all the way home and that's what I get?" Bobby couldn't help but smile. This is one of Lindsay's game again, he thought. He decided to go along... "And what is it that you want Councilor?" "I will have to seriously think about it." Lindsay then flashed him a sweet child-like smile. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Where are we going?" Bobby was demanding to know as he was trying to get his pants on. "Bobby just wear your tux." Lindsay flatly said as she went to the bathroom. When she came out she was wearing a strapless top tube with glittering beaded trim dress. She wore some make-up to better highlight her feature. Bobby was breathless.... "Wow...." Lindsay tried to suppress a smile and proceeded to her dresser... she picked a simple diamond stud earring and wore it. Bobby was eyeing her intently as she fitted her sexy-heeled sandals. "Bobby are you done?" Bobby immediately looked away like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar. "Yeah..." But he was still trying to put on his bow tie. Lindsay went to him and took over. They were such in close proximity. Bobby could not help but stare at her. "Hey, blue-eyed stop staring." Bobby smiled shyly. "Okay, we're done. Let's go," Lindsay said. She then grabbed Bobby's hand and headed for the door. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "So this is where we're going?" Bobby looked around. They were inside a plush restaurant of a five-star hotel. Today being the last day of the year, the place was teaming with people their age who looked every bit professional and successful in their career. "You asked me what I wanted. I thought this is perfect to spend the New Year. C'mon, let's dance." --------------------------------------------------------------------- "You didn't tell me you are a good dancer." "I studied ballet when I was little." "Really? I studied baseball so I only have one dance step," Bobby jokingly said. "Funny... let me teach you." Lindsay guided Bobby to do the swing. All through the dance, they were laughing and enjoying the moment. By the time they were finished, they were exhausted and gasping for breath. Suddenly, the music changed into something slow.... Bobby and Lindsay locked gazes.... They didn't say a word... instead closed the distance separating them. Lindsay slowly wounded her arms around Bobby while he placed his hands at the little of her back. All of a sudden, they were both shy and awkward of the situation, tentative to move closer. As they got swayed into the music, they loosened up.... Lindsay rested her head on Bobby's shoulder and tightened her hold of him... Bobby kissed the hollow between her neck and shoulder, and hugged her tightly as he closed his eyes... Who'd have thought this is how the pieces fit You and I shouldn't even try making sense of it I forgot how we ever came this far I believe we had reasons but I don't know what they are So blame it on my heart Love moves in mysterious ways It's always so surprising When love appears over the horizon I'll love you for the rest of my days But still it's a mystery How you ever came to me Which only proves Love moves in mysterious ways --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part VIII "What are you doing sweetheart, you should be getting dressed. John and his parents are coming over in a few minutes.... You are not looking forward to seeing him, aren't you? What's wrong honey? There is somebody...." "Mother." Lindsay tried to shrug what her mom had just realized. "What's wrong?" Lindsay was silent for a moment. She looked out the window and spoke as if talking to herself... "He fell in love with somebody else.... I just never had the courage to tell him how much he means to me." "Do you know how much this might cost you?" Lindsay's mom looked sympathetic and sorry. Lindsay closed her eyes and shook her head. "Do you want to be alone all your life, Lindsay? Imagine yourself old... and as you sit waiting for the day you'd leave this place, you look back on your life, would you not regret of the things you foolishly let go? .... There's nothing more we want than your happiness." "Dad wouldn't approve of him," Lindsay quickly said. "But I love him... He is the most passionate person I've ever met. He loves his work and he never let go of his dream no matter what it costs him. Mother, he is just the son of a janitor but he rose above that to be one of the best...." Lindsay suddenly stopped. She almost told her mother everything. "I take it, he is your boss?" "Yeah," Lindsay was barely audible. "Is he the reason you had to leave a note and run away last Christmas? Lindsay nodded. --------------------------------------------------------------------- They were all seated having their dinner when John spoke, "Lindsay, how's work?" "Fine," Lindsay quietly said. "Bobby still getting the irk of the judges? Heard the people in the DA office really hate him. Why don't you move out?" "Thank you, I am perfectly happy working for Bobby," Lindsay defensively said. "You're wasting your time there. You deserve something better, and the bigger firms can give you that." Lindsay's parents were looking curiously with the exchange going on. "Bobby is the most brilliant person I have ever come across with, and I am not gonna exchange for anything the opportunity to work for him." Lindsay was angry now. "Please excuse me, I am not feeling well. Enjoy your dinner." She stood up and as she turned around he saw Bobby standing not far away from where she was. The maid spoke, "Ms. Dole, this guy asked to see you." Bobby and Lindsay were staring at each other, unmindful of what the maid said nor the curious attention of the rest of the people in the dining room. "Bobby, what are you doing here?" --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part IX Bobby walked forward to her father and said, "I am Bobby Donnell, Mr. Dole. Your daughter works for me. I just want you to know... I love your daughter very much..." "Bobby!" Lindsay cut him. Bobby ignored her and continued, "She is the best thing that ever happened to me." He gave Lindsay a glance. Lindsay could only mutter "Bobby," begging him to stop creating a scene. He didn't budge and instead went on. "Your daughter would like to refer to me as 'sleazy' because of the tactics we used in the firm. I understand if you don't prefer me over him...." Bobby pointed to John Farell. "I have nothing to give her... except, I will do everything in my power to protect her... and I will do everything I can to make her happy. Mr. Dole... I can lose everything I have... but I can never lose her. If you don't want her working for me, fine, I can fire her... just don't ask her to leave me. "Bobby," was all Lindsay could say, tears now falling down her cheek. It finally hit Bobby what he had just done. For a while, he didn't move as if numbed, then he slowly turned around, looked at Lindsay and hugged her. "Shhh, shhh, Lindsay, it's alright. I am sorry, please forgive me. I love you so much." Lindsay embraced him tightly... although she was crying she never felt so happy. She disentangled herself from Bobby and said to her dad, "Father, I am sorry I cannot spend Christmas again with you. But I have a feeling this is going to be my best Christmas ever. There's nothing I want more than to be with this man." Lindsay's dad had resigned to the situation.... "So this is the man your mother has told me about... I have a feeling he was the reason you didn't spend Christmas here last year." Lindsay could only look down as her dad spoke, feeling embarrassed and sorry. "I think he has totally taken you away for Christmas." And then he smiled as Lindsay looked up and rushed to him to give him a hug. "Go for your happiness, sweetie. There's nothing we want more than to see you happy." Lindsay turned around and looked at Bobby. She flashed him a smile and said, "C'mon, let's go," and extended her hand to Bobby. Bobby smilingly reached for her hand, and together they ran away. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part X They decided to spend Christmas Eve at Lindsay's apartment. While on the way home, both were unusually silent, suddenly unsure of how to proceed where the drama they had starred in a few moments ago left. Each one was lost in thought - 'What's next?' They couldn't believe they were finally together, and happiness was at hand. All the obstacles had been cleared, and they had no excuse anymore. They were on their own now. This thought overwhelmed them. But most importantly, they could not wait to get home to finally consume the love they felt for each other. As Lindsay was opening the door to her apartment, Bobby was close by. He could not wait any longer and moved his body to her. He smelled her hair as if it were a flower. Lindsay moaned at the unexpected touch. Bobby then kissed her neck while Lindsay was trying to unlock her door. As soon as it was opened, Lindsay tried to open the light on reflex. However, Bobby grabbed her hand, sprung her around and kissed her passionately, while a foot kicked the door shut. Bobby was kissing her with so much force, releasing all the pent-up frustrations he had been feeling for the past few months. Lindsay was caught by surprised but she nevertheless returned Bobby's passion with the same intensity. Bobby started to remove her shirt and kissed her shoulder sweetly. They kissed ferociously until they fell back to the floor amidst the darkness. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Lindsay?" "... huh?" Lindsay said in a half sleep state, obviously exhausted by Bobby's insatiable lovemaking. "I love you." Lindsay was brought back to wakefulness. She was lying wrapped in Bobby's arms. She smiled in spite of her lips being pressed down against his body. And Bobby felt it too as he smiled. "What took you so long?" She was barely audible. "I am sorry, I didn't have that in law school," he softly said, eliciting some shrieks from Lindsay as she swatted him. He caught her hand and looked at her lovingly, "I was running away from you." Lindsay fell silent and looked at him seriously, couldn't quite grasp what he had just meant. "You are everything I ever dreamt of having.... I had this huge crush on you when I first interviewed you for the job... I was sort of expecting a geek to come walking through my door - Harvard, with honors...instead I found you.... As I got to know you... you were like a flower blooming right before me. I could not stay away from you.... I thought that what I felt would just go away. But just when I stayed late at night to bury myself to work so were you.... Hmm," he chuckled, "I would open the blinds just so to take a glimpse of you once in a while. I would sometimes even stare at you for a long while. Until, I couldn't stop myself... I intentionally would call you to my office to discuss matters when everybody was about to go home, that way, we could spend some time alone. Later, we had our little arrangement and I find myself falling hard for you. I tried to ignore it.... I felt that I didn't deserve you and that I might hurt you... and I didn't want that to happen. So I dated anyone that could give me some pleasure. But in each one of them, I was searching for you. Even Helen... when I tried to suck her elbows... God, it was because I missed doing that to you.... I then realized that I have feelings for you.... I was so happy when you finally admitted to me that you missed me. When I asked you if my dating Helen would be a problem, I was hoping you'd say yes, but instead you pushed me away again.... I was really miserable inside... like I was trapped in a situation I had no idea how I'd gotten into.... I was so angry when I started seeing you dating again. I often times would pour my anger on you... deep inside, I knew it was because I didn't want some guys spending time with you or touching you. I would get drunk often just so to ease the pain.... Lindsay looked at Bobby sympathetically, the love shining in her eyes as she tried to soothe him. "I am sorry Bobby... I never realized...." Lindsay was shaking her head. "I thought you didn't want me. I was just sticking to the end of our bargain. I thought you liked Helen, and I wanted you to be happy.... I was hurt too... every time I see you with another woman or... Helen. I would cry myself to sleep, and then you treated me shabbily. I thought you just wanted to get rid of me because you were afraid I might try to break you and Helen up... Lindsay was close to tears. Bobby held her face and wiped her tears with his thumb. Instead he said, "Lindsay, please don't leave me." "I won't, Bobby." And she embraced him like a child on her dad's lap. "I am stuck with you," she was now smiling. "I like the sound of that." Then Lindsay untangled her embrace and looked at Bobby lovingly, "I love you, Bobby Donnell. I don't care what people think or say. I love you, and there's nothing I want more than to be with you." Then she kissed him sweetly. "I love you too, Lindsay... really love you." --------------------------------------------------------------------- Part XI "Merry Christmas..." Bobby softly whispered in Lindsay's ear. "Get up sleepy head, it's twelve midnight." "Huh?" "Don't you want to open your gift?" Lindsay smiled as she tried to open her eyes. "I have a gift?" "Of course. I forgot, right?" "Yeah!" Lindsay was pretending to be angry as she remembered how Bobby had forgotten. "Merry Christmas, sweetheart." Bobby had a huge grin as he presented his gift to her. Lindsay was wide-eyed as she saw the Tiffany package. She was so excited as she opened it while Bobby smilingly looked on. "Oh...," she gasped. "Bobby, I love it. It's so exquisite...." Lindsay was speechless as she held the diamond necklace in her hand. "May I?" Bobby extended his hand, offering to put it on her. Lindsay excitedly handed the necklace and held her hair up. Bobby kissed the back of her neck as he finished clasping the necklace. "Let's look at it in the mirror," Lindsay said as she got up to see while Bobby closely followed her. "I knew it would look good on you." They were both gazing at the diamond necklace in the mirror. Bobby then looked at her and somehow the sparkle of the diamond and the Christmas lights created a twinkle in her eyes. He smiled and put his arms around her waist. He gazed at her through the mirror and said huskily, "I bought that before the Christmas party but I didn't know how to give you. When I saw it, I thought it would look beautiful on you, and I immediately bought it. The saleslady told me I must love you very much...." He then kissed her neck and swayed her body to his. He silently reminded himself to look for that saleslady again the next time he returns to buy an engagement ring for Lindsay.... Heaven knows love is just a chance we take We make plans but then love demands a leap of faith So hold me close and never, never let me go 'Coz even though we think we know which way the river flows It's not the way love goes, no Like the ticking of a clock, two hearts beat as one But I'll never understand the way it's done, oh Love moves... in mysterious ways.... The stick was blue. Wait maybe it's green maybe? Nope it's blue. The box said blue was positive and no doubt about it, the stick was blue. Lindsay Donnell examined the pregnancy test. She was pregnant. She sat in the bathroom of her apartment and sighed. She had always wanted children but she and Bobby always thought it would be best to wait for a time before pursuing a family but the stick was blue. "Linds?" she heard Bobby call. Lindsay jumped and quickly collected the pregnancy test and shoved it into the box and ran frantically trying to hide it. "Linds, where are you?" he called. She opened a cabinet and threw the box inside slamming the door and trying to act casual. She walked out of the bathroom into their master bedroom. Bobby entered. "Hey, what are you doing?' he asked suspiciously. Lindsay shrugged. "Nothing," she answered. "Did you have a nice run?" "Yes," he answered. I have to tell him now, she thought. "Bobby..." she began. The phone rang. Bobby quickly answered it. "Hello... hey Helen... nothing that I know of.... with you and Brent?... sure.... at seven?... all right see you then," he said. He hung up. "We're having dinner tonight with Helen and Brent, is that okay?" he asked. Lindsay was still acting odd. "Oh what? um... yeah, fine," she said. "Are you okay Linds?" he asked. She nodded. "Umm hmm," she said. "I'm going to jump in the shower," he said kissing her cheek. He was off to the bathroom. Lindsay sank onto the bed. I sure hope he doesn't open that cabinet. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Bobby busied himself with an upcoming case most of the afternoon. While Lindsay frantically cleaned trying to distract herself. The kitchen was immaculate but she still cleaned and recleaned. Bobby sat in the study and Lindsay looked at him. I have to tell him, she thought. She wiped her hands and walked to the study. She stopped at the doorway. Bobby looked up at her. "Hey baby," he said looking at her. She smiled. "Bobby can I talk to you about something?" she said. "Sure come here," he said and motioned for her to come to him. He pulled her into his lap. "What's wrong?" "Umm well..." Come on tell him. "I ..... Ya know how we decided that we liked the way things were and we didn't want to do anything to change it right now?" "Yeah," he agreed anxious about what she was saying. "Well um I think that change is good and sometimes it's unavoidable..." she rambled. "Linds, just tell me it can't be that bad," he said. "Oh Bobby," she said. "Come on," he urged. "Well.... I... am...... I am..... sick of the color in the bedroom and I'm going to paint it," she blurted out. "That's it?" he asked. "Yeah do you mind?" she asked disappointed in herself. "Well no honey whatever you want," he said. "That's it?" "Yeah," she said. "Ok," he said and kissed her cheek. "You had me scared there for a minute," he said as she walked out of the room. "I thought you were going to tell me you were pregnant." Lindsay stopped. Bobby laughed. Lindsay just continued out of the room. Bobby continued on with his work. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 6:15 p.m. Lindsay stood at the dresser putting her earrings in. Bobby walked out of the bathroom shirtless. He walked up behind Lindsay and wrapped his arms around her waist. He placed his hands on her stomach. He has no idea that his child is there, she thought. "I love you," he murmured. "Umm Bobby," she said turning around. "There's something else I need to tell you. " "Honey something is really bothering you. Just tell me," he said. "Well this morning..... I mean umm... well I was just wondering where we are going for dinner?" she said and immediately barraged herself. Bobby looked confused. "That Italian place on fourth," he said wrinkling his forehead. "Lindsay..." "You better hurry we're going to be late," she interrupted. Bobby nodded and shaking his head walked to the closet to get his shirt. Lindsay pulled on the cardigan of her red twin set. She looked at herself in the mirror. She wore a red twin set and black pants. She walked to the living room and collected their coats and Bobby's keys. She walked back to the bedroom and Bobby took her coat and helped her into it and then put his on. She handed him his keys. "Let's go," he said and opened the door for her. Lindsay walked out. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The ride to the restaurant was silent. When they arrived there Bobby helped Lindsay out of the car and held her hand as they entered the restaurant. The maitre'd seated them and they waited for Helen and Brent. "Linds are you okay?" Bobby asked. "Yeah fine well kind of I missed something," she said. "What do you miss?" he asked. "Well I'm la...." she began. "Hi," Helen greeted. Bobby stood and kissed her cheek and shook Mark's hand. Mark kissed Lindsay's cheek and Helen and Lindsay hugged. They sat and general conversation began while the impending news ate away at Lindsay. "Linds?... Linds?! Lindsay!," Helen said trying to get Lindsay's attention who was distracted. "What?" Lindsay said. "You were a million miles away," Helen said. Bobby looked at Lindsay concerned. "Oh sorry what was it?" Lindsay said. "Your case this week how was it?" Helen asked. "Oh he was acquitted of assault and battery," Lindsay said offering no details. "Yeah well I heard your closing was brilliant... (no response) I heard you got him off on a technicality.... (still no response from Lindsay).... You apparently are elated... (Lindsay was not paying any attention)... Actually I'm shaving my head and I'm going to join an African tribe in Zimbabwe," Helen said aware that Lindsay could care less what she was saying. Bobby and Mike carried on their own conversation. "Linds? What's up with you," Helen said grabbing Lindsay's forearm. "Nothing," Lindsay said drinking her water which had caught Helen's attention because the rest of them were drinking wine. "Yeah right," Helen said. Bobby and Mike turned their attention towards Helen and Lindsay. "Lindsay is something wrong?" Mike asked. "No! For the love of God nothing is wrong!" Lindsay said immediately regretting that she yelled at Mike. "Lindsay!" Bobby said shocked at her remark. "What's wrong with you?" he said. "Yeah Linds?" Helen said all of them leaning closely to her. Lindsay evaluated her options as they all barraged her. All the voices mixed into one big noise. Then she blurted out. "The stick was blue!" she said loudly. People close to them looked at her. The three sat back and looked at each other confusedly. "What?" Bobby said. "The stick is blue," Lindsay said beginning to cry. "What stick?" Bobby asked. Helen began to piece it together in her head and suddenly a look of enlightenment crossed her face and her mouth fell open and she sat back. Mike looked at her. "What Helen?" Mike said. Both men were completely flabbergasted. Helen remained silent. Bobby continued interrogating Lindsay. "Are you sick?" Bobby asked. Lindsay shook her head. "Then what? What damn stick are you talking about?" Helen leaned up. "Lindsay tell him," she said. Lindsay didn't respond. "Did you sleep with someone else?" Bobby asked agitated. "For God's sake Bobby," Helen said slapping Bobby's arm. "What? I don't know what the hell is wrong?" he said. "I'm pregnant," Lindsay said loudly. Bobby's chin dropped. "You're what?" he said. "Pregnant," she said looking him in he eye. Mike began to feel very out of place. "Well um congratulations!" Helen said and hugged Lindsay. Mike stood and hugged Lindsay also. "Thanks," Lindsay said. "How did this happen?" Bobby asked. "Well Bobby when a man and a woman love each other...." Helen began. "Ok I know that part," he said. "You don't want this baby," Lindsay said her eyes filling with tears. "No Linds," he said as she got up and ran out of the restaurant. "Damn," Bobby said. Helen got up to follow her. "No wait here I'll be right back," he said and got up. He walked out of the restaurant into the cold night air. Lindsay leaned against the wall crying. He walked over to her. "Lindsay," he began. "No Bobby," she said turning away from him. "Lindsay I was just suprised," he said grabbing her by the shoulders and turning her around. "I had no idea what 'the stick was blue' meant." Lindsay laughed and Bobby laughed. "That is kind of confusing," she said. He nodded. "A little. But I want this baby and we weren't planning but that's fine," he said. "Everything is going to be great." She smiled through her still teary eyes. "C'mon let's go," he said wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "What about names?" Lindsay said as they walked back to the restaurant. "Well I think we'll have to hold our own trial for that one." --------------------------------------------------------------------- End part one I hope you liked it.
