SMART MAN! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- AFTER THE KISS PART ONE Bobby reluctantly pulled away from Lindsay, looking somewhatconfused.. "What?" she asked, equally baffled. "What's wrong?" "Is it my imagination, or did you just tell me that this wasn'tgoing to happen." Bobby said, puzzled. "I know." Lindsay sighed. "I just couldn't help myself." "Lindsay, talk to me." Lindsay stepped away from him and leaned on the edge of his desk. She looked at him, all sorts of emotions sweeping over her as she did. Sheloved him, she was sure of it, but she was afraid things would turn out likelast time. "Lindsay, what's up?" Bobby asked. "I know what I said and I meant it. But Bobby, you have tounderstand, I have never loved anyone like I love you. Things are strange andcomplicated between us, you know that. Last time, I was absolutely destroyed whenit ended and I don't want to go through that again." Bobby was staring at her. he couldn't help it. He loved her. Healways did love her. but she was right, there history was complicated. "Lindsay, you know, I agree that we have a complex relationship, but I want to work things out. I think we can and I want to try." Hecontinued. "Look, I know you were hurt when I started seeing Helen and in so manyways, it hurt me too. If you remember correctly, I had hoped you would havebeen more upset than you seemed to be." She nodded. "I remember." "Lindsay" he said as he walked toward her. "I want to try again. I know that I want to be with you." He placed his hands on her cheeks. "Ifeel closer to you than I ever have to anyone. I trust you more thananyone. I know that I want to be with you. Completely." He paused, gazing intoher blue-green eyes. He knew what she wanted to hear and he wanted to sayit. "Lindsay, I . . . " "Bobby, you don't have to say anything more." Lindsay told him. She desparately wanted to hear him say he loved her, but it could wait. Just knowing that he truly wanted to be with her was enough, for now. "So,what now?" she asked. "Well, first, let's get out of here." He said, leading her to thedoor. "And go where?" "I don't know. Anywhere you want. I feel like we are beingwatched." he said. They both glanced toward the door and saw Lucy trying to lookinto Bobby's office. "Well, I guess we are." Bobby pulled the door open and walked out. Lucy scurried away but he caught her and said "Didn't you ever hear ofprivacy Lucy?" "I was just wondering where you and Lindsay were, that's all." she answered. "I wasn't spying. I swear. So, are you two a couple?" Lindsay walked up to the two of them. Lucy looked at her andnoticed something different. She looked happy, really happy. The othersstarted to congregate around the three of them. "What's going on?" Jimmy asked. "Nothing." Bobby answered. "Great party, but I'm gonna get going. Lindsay, do you want me to walk you to your car?" "Thanks. That would be great." LIndsay walked to get her coat, purse and briefcase. Bobby retrieved his coat and briefcase from his officeand met Lindsay at the door. "See you guys tomorrow." Everyone stood watching them as they left the office. Ellenorlooked at Lucy and said "All right. What's going on?" "What do you mean?" Lucy asked innocently. "You know something. Tell us." Helen walked up behind Lucy. Lucy saw her and said "I don't knowwhat you are talking about Ellenor." Ellenor stepped toward Lucy, knowing that would intimidate theteenager. Lucy whimpered and said "I saw Bobby and Lindsay kissing in hisoffice!" "There, that wasn't so hard, was it?" Ellenor said. Helen looked at Lucy and shook her head. "What? She was going to flatten me!" Licy shrieked defensively. Bobby and Lindsay stood outside of Lindsay's favorite restaurant, having just finished their meal. "What time is it?" Lindsay asked. "Almost 11:00. Why?" "I was just wondering." "Do you want to go home?" he asked, hoping she would say no. "Um, no, not really. Do you?" "Well, I thought we could go back to my place and . . . " "I don't think we should make love tonight." Lindsay interrupted. "Where the hell did that come from?" "Sorry, I just think we should wait a little while, that's all." "Lindsay, I wasn't even thinking that." "You weren't?" she asked, soinding hurt. "Well, a little, but if you want to wait, we will." "I just don't want this to become all about sex. Don't get mewrong, I love making love to you, but I want this to be more than what we hadlast time." "So do I." Bobby smiled. He put his hand on her back and led herto the car. "Do you want to go to mt place for a little while? I promise, nosex." Lindsay laughed. Disclaimer: SEE PART ONE. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bobby opened his apartment door and turned on the light before heand Lindsay walked in. She looked around, remembering the nights she usedto spend here. Everything looked the same. "Not much has changed, huh?" Bobby said, practically reading herthoughts. "Not really." Lindsay took off her coat snd Bobby hung it in thecloset. "Sit down. Do you want a drink?" he asked. "Sure. Whatever you're having." Lindsay remained on the couch as Bobby entered the kitchen. 'Howmany times did we make love right here?' she wondered. 'No stop it! If youkeep thinking like this, you will end up making love tonight! Would thatreally be so bad? NO! YES! You want to wait.' Lindsay told herself. "Here you go." Bobby handed her a bottle of Heineken. "Do youwant a glass?" "No, this is fine." Lindsay took a sip of beer. Bobby sat next to her with one hand on the back of her neck and the other holding his beer. He gently stroked her neck, thrilled to be touching her, sitting so closeto her. Lindsay leaned forward and set her beer on the table. She turnedto face Bobby, gazed into his eyes, then looked away. She wanted him sobadly, but was determined to stick to her "no sex tonight" rule. Bobby sethis beer down as well and gently brushed hair away from her face. "Lindsay" he whispered, gently guiding her face to his. He looked at her intentlyand kissed her softly on the lips. He pulled back, staring at her. Againhe moved closer, kissing her more and more passionately. Lindsay wrappedher arms around him, pulling herself closer to Bobby. Bobby's hands tracedup and down her back gently. Lindsay's hands found their way to Bobby'shair. He slowly began to unbutton her blouse. Lindsay did the same to hisshirt. The two fell back on the couch, Lindsay lying on top of Bobby. Bobby grappled with Lindsay's bra, trying desparately to get it open. Lindsay struggled with Bobby's belt, then suddenly stopped. She awkwardlytried to sit up, but fell to the floor. Bobby sat up. "You ok?" "Yeah." Lindsay laughed. "Why did you stop?" he asked while helping her up. "I don't think we should sleep together tonight, remember?" shesaid sitting next to him. "Well, I was trying to forget." he said. "Bobby, you promised." Lindsay scolded. "I know. I couldn't help it. I want you so badly." "Me too. But please Bobby, let's wait, just a little while." "Ok." He picked up his beer and took a drink. Lindsay did thesame. The two sat there, silent, shirtless and finished their beers. "Bobby, I think you had better take me home." "Already?" "I think if I stay any longer, I won't be able to stick to my nosex vow." "That would be terrible, wouldn't it?" he said while stroking herhair. "Yes." she said as she jumped up from the couch. "Please?" "Ok." Bobby put his shirt back on and went to the closet to gettheir coats. He helped Lindsay with her coat and led her out the door. The next morning, Lindsay walked into the kitchen and found Helensitting at the counter. "Morning." Lindsay mumbled. "Good morning sunshine. Where did you go last night? As if Idon't know." "Well, where do you think I was?" Lindsay asked. "With Bobby." Helen grinned. "Did you sleep with him?" "Almost." "What do you mean almost?" "Well, we almost had sex, but I stopped." "Why?" "I want to wait a little while. I don't want this to be all about sex. I really want things to work out between us this time." Lindsay toldher friend. "So then you're officially back together?" "I guess so." Helen smiled. "I'm glad." "Thanks Helen." Lindsay poured herself a cup of coffee. The phonerang and Helen picked up. "Hello? Well, good morning. And how are you today? ... yes sheis. Oh, you want to talk to her? ... Really? ... I don't know. ... Ohfine. No need to get nasty." Helen hands the phone to Lindsay. "Hello?" Lindsay says into the receiver. "Good morning." Bobby says. "How are you?" "Oh, all right. How about you?" "Well, I missed you last night. I kept waking up, hoping you werewith me." "Bobby..." "I know. We're waiting. That's fine. I just want to give you ahard time." "I guess." "What time are you coming in today?" "10:00. Why?" "Just wondering. Ok, well I'll see you at the office." "Ok. See you later." "Bye Lindsay." "Bye Bobby." Lindsay hung up the phone and walked toward the bathroom. Helenfollowed. "What, you aren't going to give me all the details?" "Not now. I need to get ready for work." Disclaimer: SEE PART ONE -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lindsay walked into the office and was met by four faces staringright at her. Jimmy, Rebecca, Ellenor and Lucy all watched as she walked to herdesk and sat down. "Good morning," she said to them. "Morning." they replied in unison, as if they had been practicing. "How are you?" Rebecca asked. "Ok." Lindsay answered. "What's going on?" "Nothing." Jimmy said. "Why do you think something's going on?" "Well, why is everyone staring at me?" she asked. "I saw you and Bobby kissing last night." Lucy blurted out. Lindsay sighed. "I see. Well, what do you want to know?" "Are you two having sex?" Lucy asked. "Lucy!" they all shouted. "What? That's what everyone really wants to know. They just don'twant to be the one to ask." "No we are not. Happy?" Lindsay stated emphatically. Bobbywalked out of his office to see what was going on. "Good morning Lindsay." he said. "Hi Bobby." "What's going on out here?" he asked. "I saw you two kissing last night." Lucy said again. "Oh yeah? I thought you weren't spying." he scolded. "It was an accident." Lucy cried. "I swear." "Yes, I kissed Lindsay. Now, how about we all get back to work." Bobby turned and walked back into his office. Lindsay sat at her desk and began writing in a file folder. Twenty minutes later, the door opened and a delivery man walked in carrying aflower arrangement. "Lindsay Dole?" he said. "That's me." Lindsay said. He stepped up to her desk and set theflowers on her desk. "There you go." "Thank you." she said. Lindsay tore the paper off and gasped whenshe saw two dozen yellow roses, her favorite. She lifted the case andthrew the paper to the floor. Lucy, Ellenor and Rebecca walked to her desk. There was a card which she picked up before anyone got their hands on it. Shesat in her chair and opened the envelope. 'Lindsay, I missed you. Not only last night, but every night forthe last year. Bobby' She quickly stuck the card back in the envelope. "They're beautiful." Rebecca said. "Yes they are." Ellenor agreed. "Bobby sent them, didn't he?" Lucy asked. Lindsay didn't sayanything, she just smiled. "Yep, he did." Lucy said with certainty. Lindsay quietly stood up and walked to Bobby's office. She knocked softly and opened the door when Bobby said "Come in." She closed the door behind her and walked to his desk. "Hi," he said. "Are they giving you a hard time?" "No." Lindsay smiled. "The flowers are absolutely beautiful. Thank you." "Oh, they came already?" "Yeah, just a couple of minutes ago." Lindsay walked aroundBobby's desk and stood behind his chair. She rested her head on his and said "Thenote was beautiful too." "Yeah? I thought it sounded a little corny." "Well, I loved it." Lindsay laughed. "They all hovered around mydesk when I opened the card. Lucy was positive they were from you. Whatare we going to tell them?" "Do we have to tell them anything?" Bobby asked. "Bobby, they are our friends. They want to know what's going onwith us." "Well, we'll tell them the truth, that we are back together." "Ok." Lindsay softly kissed the top of his head and started forthe door. "Wait a second." Bobby called. Lindsay turned around. Bobby approached her and said "Give me areal kiss." "Bobby, we're at work." "I know. I don't care." He thought for a moment. "Hey, thatdidn't stop you last night!" "Touche." Lindsay glanced toward the door to see if anyone waslooking in. She reached up and kissed Bobby long and soft. He held her tight, then released her. She smiled at him and opened the door, then jumped backas Lucy and Rebecca fell into Bobby's office. "What the hell are you two doing?" he yelled. "It was Lucy's idea." Rebecca said. "Sure, blame it all on me." Lucy cried. "Sorry." "Come on, get up." Bobby said. The two stood up and walked backto their desks, faces red with embarrassment. Lindsay looked at Bobby. "I think now's a good time, don't you?" "Yeah." he said. "Come on." He took Lindsay's arm and walked intothe middle of the office. "Where's Eugene?" "In his office." Lucy replied. "I'll get him." She ran to hisdoor and knocked. "Eugene, Bobby wants you out here." Eugene walked out of his office and stood next to Lucy's desk. "What's going on?" he asked. "Well, since almost everyone is so preoccupied with my office andwhat is going on inside it, I thought I'd fill you in. Last night, Lindsay andI got back together. There. Are you happy now? And yes, I sent her theflowers. Yellow roses are her favorite. And no, Lucy, we did not have sex last night." Bobby paused. "Anything else?" "Um, you two were together before?" Lucy asked. "Yeah, then they broke up because Bobby wanted to go out withHelen." Rebecca said. "You went out with Helen too?" Lucy cried. "Lindsay's best friend? You dumped her for her best friend? And you want to get back together withhim? I mean, he's sexy and all that, but..." "First of all, it's really none of your business. Second, I brokeup with him, he did NOT dump me!" Lindsay stated. "That's true." Bobby said. "Now is everyone satisfied? Can weget back to work?" Everyone slowly returned to their desks and resumed the work they had been doing. Lindsay sat at her desk, gazing at the flowers Bobby hadsent her. She knew she wouldn't get any work done today, she was toopreoccupied. Besides, today was the last day of work before Christmas.
