Title: One More Day Author: Stephanie, practiceluver@hotmail.com Summary/Author's Note: This story is set during Bobby's trial. We didn't really get to see Bobby and Lindsay talk much about how things would be if he was found guilty, so this fic is about how I think they felt! It's in Bobby's POV. Disclaimer: Not mine. Not mine. Not mine. I keep telling myself that. And the songs I use are not mine either. If no one has noticed, I like using songs in my fics. :-) ~*~*~*~ I can't believe this is happening to me. It just doesn't seem real. My life was perfect. I had perfect friends, the perfect job, but most importantly I had a wife that I was madly in love with, who was pregnant with our first child. Then that psycho William Hinks had to come into our lives, and might have very well ruined them. When he first started stalking Lindsay, I wasn't very worried. I thought he seemed relatively harmless, and I hate to say it, but most of my time was spent trying to get Scott Wallace off. When I look back on it, I can't believe how much I had been neglecting Lindsay, and I am so angry at myself for doing that. I took advantage of Lindsay, of my perfect life. If I could go back and change something, I would tell Lindsay I loved her more, and appreciate what I had. However, when Hinks sent Lindsay that dog and then killed it, I started to come to my senses and get worried. Then, when he murdered Jeannie, I was downright terrified. Lindsay was so sad and upset when he killed her, they had been friends for a long time. And it was obvious that Lindsay was Hinks' next target. I HAD to protect Lindsay. She is the most important thing in the world to me. If I lost her.... I could not let him hurt her and our baby. So I called Alan Neal. I know that probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I was desperate. I had felt like the walls were closing in on me and my perfect life, and- "Bobby?" Eugene's deep voice interrupted my thoughts as he entered the dimly lit area of my office. "Hmm?" I answered him absentmindedly, leaning back in my chair. "Don't you think you should be spending this time with Lindsay?" Lindsay had gone home hours ago, she wasn't feeling well, but I stayed at the office. I don't know why I decided to stay, I think I just wanted to be alone for awhile. But Eugene was right. "You're right Eugene. This could be the last night I have with her... I just... don't want to face reality I guess." I sighed. "I'm gonna go home now. Make the most of the time I have left..." I let my voice trail off, and took a deep breath to compose myself. "Okay. I'll see you tomorrow at the courthouse. We're supposed to be there at 10:30, the jury will have made a decision by then." Eugene tried to sound confident, but I could detect the nervousness in his voice. I stood up and walked towards the door. "Hey Eugene?" I said, turning back around. "Yeah?" "Thanks. Thanks for defending me. You tried a great case. I knew if anyone could get me off, it would be you. I appreciate all your efforts. No matter what happens, I know you did whatever you could." "You're welcome man. Can I give you a piece of advice before you go?" "Of course," I replied, wondering what Eugene's advice would be. "Tonight, when you go home, make sure you let Lindsay know just how deeply you feel for her. It may be your last chance. I know that you two are married, but most of the time you are so absorbed in cases and your own matters, you don't think of her. She is such an amazing woman, and no matter how emotionally closed off you may have been to her lately, she has stood by you. Tonight, let her know she is the most important thing in your life," he looked up at me and reiterated, "It may be your last chance." I nodded and left, and all the way home I thought of Eugene's parting words. "It may be your last chance." How right he was. ~*~*~*~ When I got home, I threw my jacket on the back of a chair and went searching for Lindsay. "Lindsay!" I called out, walking from the living room to the kitchen. I got no answer, so I tried again. "Linds?" I walked into the bedroom that we shared and the sight nearly broke my heart. Lindsay was lying on our bed asleep, and it was evident she had been crying. Her cheeks were tear-stained and still damp. She was clutching a piece of paper, it looked like a picture, tightly to her chest. Curious, I moved closer to the bed and leaned over my sleeping wife. I gently pried the picture from her fingers and stared at it. It was a picture of us on our honeymoon. We looked so incredibly happy. Lindsay's golden brown hair was glowing in the afternoon sun, and her eyes were shining. I had my arm wrapped protectively around her waist and you could almost see the love I felt for her emanating from me. I felt a knot forming in my throat as I choked back tears. Why did I have to ruin the amazing life we had together? I sat on the bed next to Lindsay and softly stroked her face and hair... I couldn't believe I might never get to touch her again. After several moments Lindsay stirred and her eyelids fluttered. She looked up at me with those bright blue eyes; those eyes I have come to know so well, that looked further into me than any others ever even bothered to. I had come so accustomed to them being the last thing I saw before I fell asleep, and the first thing I saw when I woke up. Yet another thing I had taken for granted. "Hey," Lindsay whispered, and smiled. That was all it took for me to start crying. Hearing her voice that always sounded like music to my ears, and seeing her wonderful, amazing smile that made me light up inside. Lindsay sat up and intertwined my fingers in hers. "What is it?" she asked soothingly. "I just.... can't imagine.... never being able to see you smile again," I said, before I completely broke down. Lindsay took me in her arms and buried her face in my neck. I felt my shoulder start to get wet, so I knew she was crying, too. I felt so horrible for all the pain I had caused her, especially with her being in her seventh month of pregnancy. The trial and her worrying had put her under a tremendous amount of stress. It was all my fault. "Linds," I whimpered, pulling away a little so she could hear what I was about to say. She looked up at me expectantly, her eyes filled with the tears threatening to fall. I put my hand on her "Buddha belly" as we affectionately called it, and rubbed in a circular motion. I looked down as I spoke to her, I couldn't bare to look her in the face, with all the guilt I was feeling. "I am so sorry for all that I have put you and our baby through." I then looked up at Lindsay, my face begging for forgiveness. "Bobby," she said in the sweetest, most gentle voice I have ever heard, "This is not your fault. I know you didn't mean to hurt anyone, and hopefully the jury will see that, too." She looked at me with so much love and sympathy that I felt like the luckiest man in the world. Here I was, possibly ruining her life, and she still loved me and stood by me. For not the first time that day I wish I would have appreciated more what I so foolishly took for granted. I took a deep breath and placed my hand on Lindsay's cheek. "How can you still love me after what I did to you, what I am making you go through?" "Bobby, when we got married, I pledged to love you for the rest of my life. And I have every intention of doing that. There is nothing in the world that would make me stop loving you. When I think about it, I have never known a love like the one we share. And I know why you did what you did. You were only trying to protect me, protect our baby. How could I not love you for that?" Lindsay was so genuine and sincere with her words, that I knew she was telling the truth. "I know... I know why I did what I did. I just hope that the jury can see that. I hope that they see you are the single most important thing in the world to me, and I had to do something. You know, if William Hinks would have harmed you in some way, my life would be over. I could not go on living knowing there was something I could have done to prevent him from harming you. You are the most precious thing in my life, my world, my universe." One of Lindsay's hands was rubbing mine, and the other was placed on top of her stomach. My other hand was running my fingers through her silky hair. "I.... I know I don't say this enough Lindsay. I know I take you and our love for granted. I realized the past few days, during the trial, that I don't treat you how you need to be treated, or show you the affection you deserve. And I just want to apologize right now if I have ever made you feel like you are anything less than the most important thing in my life. You know the saying you don't know what you have until it's gone? Well I knew I had you, the greatest woman in the world, but I just didn't show the proper appreciation for having you. And now I might have to go." Tears were streaming down Lindsay's face now, and my own. I leaned over and kissed the tears away, before kissing Lindsay tenderly on the lips. I had to savor this kiss, savor the soft feel of her lips against mine, the feel of her warm breath. I had to remember just in case I could never kiss her again. "I love you so much, Lindsay," I said, after we pulled apart. "I love you with a love so intense it scares me sometimes. No matter what happens tomorrow, I want you to know that I love you, and will always love you." Lindsay took a shaky breath. "I love you too. I love you so much. I just don't know what I'm going to do if--" she cut herself off. We both knew what she was going to say, though. I laid down on the bed and opened my arms. "Come here," I whispered, and she did. Lindsay nestled up against me to where we could not possibly be any closer than we were at that moment. That was how I wanted it to be. "Linds, if I could ask for anything, it would be for one more day to spend with you." She wrapped her arms tighter around me, and said, "I know, Bobby. I know." *"Last night I had a crazy dream a wish was granted just for me, it could be for anything I didn't ask for money or a mansion in Malibu I simply wished, for one more day with you One more day one more time one more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied but then again I know what it would do Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you First thing I'd do, is pray for time to crawl then I'd unplug the telephone And keep the TV off I'd hold you every second say a million I love you's That's what I'd do, with one more day with you. One more day one more time one more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied but then again I know what it would do Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you Leave me wishing still, for one more day Leave me wishing still, for one more day"* That was how we stayed, snuggled up to each other and talking all night long. We talked about our past, and the present, and what could happen in the future. ~*~*~*~ The next morning Lindsay and I took a cab to the courthouse. Neither one of us felt steady enough to drive without ramming into something. The whole way there, Lindsay sat with her head against my chest, and held my hand. I shut my eyes and just tried to save the way I felt right now, with Lindsay, so complete, to put it in a vault to take out whenever I wanted to remember this feeling. Just in case I never got to hold Lindsay again... When we arrived at the court and exited the cab, dozens of reporters shoved cameras and microphones into our faces, but I just put my arm around Lindsay and we walked inside without saying a word. As soon as we got into the courthouse, Eugene was there to greet us. "Hey. The jury is ready, we have to go right in." he then rushed into the courtroom, I knew he was trying to give me and Lindsay a few (last?) seconds alone. I hugged her tightly and kissed her lips, then pulled away and cupped her face in my hands. "I love you Lindsay. Always keep my love for you in your heart, and remember that I love you." Lindsay had silent tears rolling down her cheeks as she said, "I love you. Know that I will love you forever, and I will always be with you." We then entered the room, me going to the defendant's table while her going with the rest of the crowd. "Will the defendant please rise." We rose. "Has the jury reached a verdict?" "We have, your honor." "What say you?" In that moment, before the verdict was read, my life with Lindsay flashed before my eyes. I remembered our "last time" in my office, our kiss at the Christmas party that made us an official couple, Lindsay getting stabbed and me proposing in the hospital, our elopement at Fenway Park, our honeymoon, Lindsay telling me she was pregnant. I held my breath as I awaited the jury's response. "We find Robert Donnell not guilty on all three counts." I felt a burden lift off my shoulders right then and there, and my mind could only think one thought: Lindsay. Go to Lindsay. So through the thicket of reporters and onlookers I grabbed Lindsay's arm and led her to an elevator which we got on alone. She collapsed, crying with relief, against me, and I held her like I would never let go. After a moment she raised her head and looked me in the eyes. "Looks like we'll be getting that one more day, huh?" she said, her voice shaking with emotion. I smiled and replied, "Looks like we'll be getting the rest of our lives." ~~THE END!~~ ~*~*~*~ Well, what did everyone think? I'm a rather insecure person so if I get no feedback I will automatically assume that this was the worst piece of writing you ever read, you hated it, and you never want me to write again. So PLEASE send feedback! :-) ~Steph, practiceluver@hotmail.com
