She couldn't believe that she sent that guy to prison. She had fought so hard, knowing that this one was different, this one shouldn't slip...coz this one was innocent. He had looked at her so pleadingly when he said that he didn't do it, he would never think about doing anything like it anytime in his life. Staying up late in the night to set one free was something she never did, she didn't need to. Almost all the others were guilty, and they always held a loophole. All her work then was to find the loophole, and she always did. But this time it was different, this time all she had was a loophole and despite burning the midnight oil, it wasn't enough to go beyond reasonable doubt. She sighed and began picking up her papers, refusing to meet the pleading eyes of her client as he was taken away into custody for 10 damning years without parole, for a murder he didn't commit. As she began to feel deflated all over again, she felt Bobby's hand on her shoulder, "Hey, you can still appeal-"she turned around to face him in the stands and everything he wanted to say died on his lips. She looked so hurt, it made him realise how much this meant to her. He could kick himself for giving her this case. Especially during this time, when her hormones threatened to make her laugh or cry at the slightest thing... He looked at her rounded belly and love suffused him. He looked back at her and found her smiling. That wasn't a good sign, was it? He knew she was smiling to make him feel better and to shut him out. And he also knew that was going to mute out again if he looked into her eyes, so full of pain and guilt...That damning well wasn't going to work. He isn't going to leave her in dumps like this, whether she liked it or not. And so he looked up.................damn her hormones, she looked fine! And just seconds ago he feared she was going to sit down and cry. She finished packing up, "Lets go......what? Oh, that one. S'okay Bobby, I'll appeal, besides I just had to get one in the jury.........I'm hungry, lets go!" she said dragging him out. What the hell, he might as well play along and pretend everything was ok.....that is, until her outburst. * * * * * * * * * * * That didn't take long actually. She threw the half empty boxes of food in the trash bin and with a sudden jerky movement, she looked at the rest of the people at D,Y,D&F and screamed, "No parole!! What the hell were they thinking giving him no chance to get out! Just b'cuz it cant get into their hard skull that he might be innocent, they have to lock him up for 10 years?!! And to think I spent hours digging up everything to get him out!" She looked angrily at Bobby, her hormone-induced tears threatening to spill out, "It's all your fault, -sniff- you never should've given me thiis caase. You could've given it to -sniff- gene or Bec or anyone." She pulled out a few tissues from her desk and everything she said sounded muffled to the rest of them and they couldn't help exchanging looks. Bobby pulled her into his arms and muttered something into her ears before she finally stopped crying. "Okay," she replied still sniffling, "Promise?" "Promise," he confirmed smiling. "I have to go appeal anyway," she said as she left the office. "That one's changing her moods faster than Jimmy loses his cases." Ellenor observed dryly. "Hey, I heard that!" Jimmy said looking hurt. "So, what're the magic words, or shouldn't I ask?" Eugene said turning to Bobby. "Ice-cream." Bobby replied, "Right after work today." "Wow." "Sounds like fun," Rebecca said filling up her cup with coffee. "Yeah, you know, we should all go!" Lucy said enthusiastically, looking around for takers. "Gee, that would be fun," Jimmy said less-than-enthusiastic. Lucy glared daggers at him, "You people should learn to have fun! All you ever do is run around getting clients off, amd if you cant have fun, doesn't mean you should-" "Lucy," Bobby said sternly. "I know, I know, I'll shut up." * * * * * * * * * * * She wanted more. She had just finished her last cone, but she was craving for more. She peeked into Bobby's office through the blinds. He looked busy. She felt bad asking him to go out again. If she told him she wanted more, she knew he'd run out and get it within minutes. Why did he have to be so damned busy! But she really really wanted it, and he looked like he could use a break. He looked up with the instinct that tells someone that they're being watched. Before he could spring up from his chair, she opened the door, "Busy?," she asked sweetly. "Want something?" he was beside her in an instant. "If you're too busy...." He looked at the pile of files on his table. Lots of work actually... "I'm still kinda craving for ice-cream...." "Lets go then," he said, without another thought about his pending work. "Don't worry, we'll be back pretty soon." "Nah, its okay, take as much time as you want, I can take care of this stuff," he said smiling his aren't-I-the-perfect-husband smile, one that usually had people awwww-ing about. "Ok," she said, touched that he was dumping everything to go with her. "Don't cry now, I'm doing this for myself too," he almost whined praying to the hormones that ruled her. "I'll try," she said picking up her coat. * * * * * * * * * * * "What d'you wanna have?" he asked once they were in the parlour. But he she didn't seem to hear him. He was about to ask her again, when he noticed that she was staring off to his right. Before he could say anything, she said, "Bobby, he looks just like him!" "Just like whom?" "Like Dave." "Dave?....Oh, Dave," he said remembering that morning's trial. He turned around and saw a man in his mid-twenties ringing up the orders at the counter. He didn't really look like Dave, he just had the same dark-blond hair and angular face. But apparently, it was enough to trigger another guilt trip. Those hormones that he was now officially scared about, made the unperishable tears flow down her cheeks. "Dave's rotting in prison right now," she said in a babyish voice. "You did everything you could honey, there's no way-" She was bawling by now. He pulled her into his arms, like he did so many other times in the past four months, and said, "Come on Lindsay, you appealed, you're still fighting for him, there's no way you're going to feel guilty about this." "But he's innocent!! I get murderers off, how could I let him slip?!" "Sshh," he said soothingly pulling her down to let her sit in one of the chairs. "You got the others off, b'cause you had something to work on. This case had absolutely nothing in favour of Dave. Even Perry Mason couldn't ahve gotten him off." "YOU could've!" "Are you kidding me? There's no way anyone could've done a better job in there, and don't you doubt that for a minute..." She was silent for a minute, wiping out her tears. She looked around and stared for a long time at *Dave-look-alike*. "Maybe it's because I'm pregnant Bobby, maybe it's not letting me work well..." "Lindsay, you know that doesn't even sound true to yourself." She ignored him, "And now just cuz I'm pregnant, he's going to rot in the prison for ten years. With no parole!" He couldn't believe the extent of her guilt! He wanted to shake her up and try to make her listen to the ridiculous accusations she was making about herself. He could've understood her ranting, but to feel guilty about having a baby?! He knew she thought this was really important and her pregnancy made things worse for her, but he knew this guilt trip couldn't last longer....Or she was going to end up feeling guilty about LIVING. And he was going to make sure that she remembers what fun this pregnancy was supposed to be for both of them. And he knew the one thing that would be perfect just about now.... "Wanna have ice-cream?" he asked, pulling her up from the chair. " Uh?" was all she could say, her tear filled eyes looking at him confusedly. "Ice-cream. That's why we came here remember?" "Yeah, but-" "No buts," he said, looking around. "This place is boring, lets go somewhere else." He walked out along with Lindsay, trying to ignore the sniffling noises she was making. He couldn't let them pull him down, or he knew he was going to melt right there. He sort of had a mission now, and he sure as hell was going to do it. He suddenly stopped as a huge kids ice-cream parlour came into view. 'Mr. Higgly Wiggly' the bold orange blooped letters spelled out on the sign above. Tiny orange footprints were painted on the path that led to the it and a couple of kids were trying to walk on them "This is the place," he said grandly. "What!" she exclaimed incredulously. "Yeah, come on." "Bobby!!" Despite her lame protests, he dragged her in, and once they were inside the parlour, Lindsay began to feel extremely self consious as they seemed to be the only *old* people around. The rest of them hardly reached her elbow. And he didnt even seem to mind! He walked up to the counter and said to the whoever-in-the-Higgly-Wiggly-costume, that he wanted the hugest icecream available. "That would have to be the Mr. Higgly Wiggly Mega Kiddie Surprise," the guy/girl replied. "Mega Surprise it is then, with," he turned to look at her, "chocolate chip cookie dough?" She was too busy trying not to laugh, to respond. He's so cute!! "Yeah, chocolate chip cookie dough." he confirmed fishing out his wallet. That's it? Choc dough? "Wait," Lindsay cried, "add hot fudge and um, licorice- strawberry licorice." "Okey dokey," the person in the costume said as he rung up the order and went in the back to prepare it, then quickly returned with the ice-cream concoction. The large shallow bowl which was decorated all over with little pictures of balloons, crayons and teddybears, contained three scoops of ice-cream arranged like two eyes and a nose. The "nose" scoop had a big sugar-cone sticking out it, and each of the "eyes" had a bright red cherry in the center. Hot fudge had been drizzled to make a pair of shaggy eyebrows and a big piece of strawberry licorice was stretched across as a mouth. The sight of the sundae actually made her stomach rumble. And it was so hard not to laugh too! She hadn't eaten one of these from the time she was a kid. Bobby carried the sundae to a nearby booth and Lindsay followed, sliding beside him. He handed her one of the long, plastic spoon he had grabbed at the counter. "Dig in," he said , his expression overly solemn. She couldn't stop giggling as she reached in for a spoonful of "nose" and put it in her mouth. "It's great huh?" "Mm-hmm," she agreed, her mouth already full with a huge chunk of cookie dough. "You're such a sweetheart!" she said between bites. * * * * * * * * * * * She was laughing uncontrollably as she walked out of Mr.H W and Bobby had to literally hold her everytime she doubled over. "That was soo much of fun!" "It was," he agreed as he remembered their ice-cream fight inside. His tie was stained, but he didn't really mind as long she was having fun and her mind wasn't on *other* things. He realised she had stopped walking, and looked at her to make sure she was ok. "Bobby! They make pots here! Lets go see, pleease..." "Pots?" "Yeah, see that building there? Its for people to make pots even though they know nothing about it, Helen told me it was loads of fun! She came here with Mike." "Mike made pots?!" "Yeah, and you're going to too." "Lindsay! I know nothing about pots!" "Neither do I, but i wanna go seeee," she whined. "Ok, ok, we'll go....make pots." She smiled triumphantly as she dragged him in. * * * * * * * * * * * She was squealing so loud, the couple in the next cabin were peeing over to see what was going on. He smiled apologitically at them as he tried to keep his hands steady on the churning wheel of mud. He had to admit it was fun. The entire floor was divided into cabins with a churning wheel or whatever they called it right in the middle and loads of mud to fool around with. There was mud all over him and Lindsay and she squealed everytime he took out his hand, fearing that he would get back at her for smearing his shirt with her hands. It was hours before they got out of the place and when they did, Bobby felt as light as a feather, his mind still reeling from their hours of fun, whereas Lindsay was tired to the bone and was begging him to carry her to the car. "Bobby, please...I'm so tired." "You don't mind if I do it on the road?" "I don't give a damn about what those people think!" "Ok..." he said grinning widely before he put his hands below her knees and neck and carried her. He was sure he could hear somebady say "Oh my God" but like Lindsay he didn't give a damn. Finally, he made it to the car and put ther down gently, and noticed that his same blissful happy expression mirrored on her face. "Thanks Bobby," she said kissing him lightly on the cheek. "Don't say that again, k? Its for both of us." * * * * * * * * * * * The next afternoon in D,Y,D&F, "Accessory to murder?" Rebecca said disbelievingly. "Yeah," Lucy said, "Lindsay's bawling in the courtroom." "When did Dave confess?" "Worst part, he didn't. The guy who actually killed the girl, Jeff Stilts, confessed and dragged Dave into it." "Wow." "Yeah, Bobby's worried big time. I think the craziness got to him too, he was saying something like 'Lindsay's gonna need a pot', and said he's going to be late b'cuz he had to wiggle or higgle something." ________________________________________________________________________________ THE END ________________________________________________________________________________ la la la la, i need feedback, even though i'm in a happy mood.....please send it to me, pleeeaaassee...
