Title: Out of reach, part 1. Author: Michal. Hashavit@r... Summary: It’s around the end of the second season. Bobby needs a serious wake up call as Jake, Lindsay’s old boyfriend from college comes back to her life and wants to get her back. Something Bobby was always too afraid to do… enjoy!! Disclaimer: Only Jake’s mine. The others… they’re David’s. I’m just playing with them… No harm is intended. ******* “Donnell, Young, Dole and Frutt, how may I help you? Just a minute. Eugene, phone.” “Thanks Bec.” “Sorry Bobby, so what did the judge say?” Rebecca shifted the conversation back to its track. “It won’t fly, the deposition is set for this afternoon. Helen’s supposed to be here in ten minutes.” Their conversation was again interrupted when the door opened. Inside came in a man in his late 20’s but without the appearance of a lawyer. His rusted jeans and leather jacket made him seem more like a client. Yet his slightly grown blond hair and green brown eyes did not go pass Ellenor and Rebecca, who stood there speechless. “Hello, how may I help you?” Rebecca kindly gestured him in. “Hmm, I’m not sure.” He scanned the entire office. “Is there a woman by the name of Lindsay Dole in here.” The entire room has now focused its attention on the man. “Yes, yes there is, but she’s not here right now. Can I take a message?” “Yeah, tell her that Jake stopped by.” “Jake what?” “She’ll know.” He smiled. “Is this regarding a case?” “No, not really.” He kept looking at the room in its entirety. As the office door opened again, Helen walked inside. “Jake?! Oh my god!” she immediately went to hug him. An act that obviously made the others even more intrigued than usual. “Hey Helen.” He smiled charmingly. “What are you doing here?” “I’ve got a job here so I figured it would be a great opportunity to surprise Lindsay.” “A job as what?” Bobby whispered to Jimmy “A hit man?” “And she’ll be surprised alright!” Helen replied enthusiastically. “Listen, I’ve got to go. Tell Lindsay I stopped by.” “Will she know how to find you?” “Don’t worry. I always find her.” “Yeah, you do.” Helen smiled, happy to see an old friend. Jake turned to leave, noticing Bobby’s blank stares at him. “Nice suit.” He smirked. “Everybody here dresses like that?” Bobby nodded with a cold stare. “Lindsay too.” He did not wait for an answer. “Well, she looks hot in everything.” And he left. “Who was that?” Bobby turned to Helen, clearly ticked off. “That… that was Jake.” “Jake being…?” “Lindsay never told you guys about Jake?” everybody looked curious. “Well, he was an old friend of ours.” “And what about Lindsay?” Bobby got more interested. “Well, they were college sweethearts. He was her first real love.” Everybody looked puzzled at Helen and even more at Bobby. About two hours later Lindsay came back from court. “Hey everybody, what’s up?” “Hey Lindsay,” Rebecca got right down to business. “A young gentleman dropped by a couple of hours ago.” “Yeah, and?” she went to make herself a cup of coffee. “He was looking for you but he didn’t leave a last name.” Bobby got out of his office and quietly listened to see Lindsay’s reaction. “Did he give a private name?” “Yeah.” Bobby interjected. “Jake.” He quickly scanned her face. “Jake?” “Yep. Doesn’t look like a lawyer to me.” He started. “He sure doesn’t.” she smiled and went to sit at her desk, her mind filled with different thoughts. “Yeah, great leather jacket.” Ellenor had to say. “Do you have one like this?” “Well…” her smile became wider. “Actually, I do have it some where with my old stuff.” Bobby came up to her desk. “So, who’s Jake?” “He’s just an old friend.” She took a few files out of her briefcase. “According to Helen. He’s a little more than an old friend.” She shot him a look “well if you already know then why did you ask?” Bobby stared at her with hurtful eyes and got back to his office. “What was that about?” Eugene slammed the door as he entered Bobby’s office. “What?” “Your little reaction there to the lost boyfriend.” “No reaction Eugene. He just pisses me off.” “Oh man you’ve got it deep.” He chuckled. “Whatever. Listen, I’ve got a depo in 20 minutes. I’ve got to go.” “Fine.” “Fine.” Bobby took his briefcase and quickly left the office. ******* “Lindsay!” Bobby called out to Lindsay as he spotted her in the crowded corridors of the courthouse the morning after. “Hey Bobby, what are you doing here?” “I just had an arraignment.” “Richards?” “Yeah.” “I thought tat was tomorrow.” “Nope.” They stepped inside the elevator. “Listen Lindsay, I’m sorry.” “What about?” she smiled. “Yesterday. Me butting my nose where it isn’t my business.” “That’s ok. I didn’t mean to react the way I did. I was just a little edgy, that’s all.” “So we’re cool?” “Yeah don’t worry about it.” “You’re heading back to the office?” Bobby asked as they walked out of the elevator and the courthouse. “Yeah. You want to walk back together?” “No, I’ve got my car. We’ll get there faster.” “Sure.” When they were ready to cross the street, a loud motorcycle stopped in the other side of the street. As Jake removed his helmet and saw Lindsay, Bobby could see her eyes sparkle. “Hey beautiful!” he yelled. Lindsay laughed and crossed the street. “Jake.” She smiled and went to hug him. Jake picked her up in his arms and spin her around himself. Bobby stood at the side of the street, watching the two, trying to be happy for his dear friend. However, not doing a very good job at it. As Lindsay got back on the ground, Jake brushed her hair out of her eyes and softly kissed her on the lips. At this point, Bobby chose to cross the street as well. “You look beautiful.” He examined her. “A beautiful lawyer.” They laughed. “Oh Jake, this is Bobby Donnell, my colleague and friend. Bobby Donnell, this is Jake Mathews.” They shook hands. “Yeah, we’ve met.” Bobby answered. “Although not officially introduced.” Jake added. “Good grip.” “You too.” “Listen! Jake…” Lindsay felt the need to brake off those two. “I have to get back to the office. How long are you here in town?” “Forever, if you want me too.” He smiled “Really.” “I’m here to check out a residency job at St. Anne’s.” “Sticking with pediatrics I see.” “Always, you know me… so when am I gonna get your number? I want to see you. I’ve been chasing you all around Boston. Your secretary said you’re in court so I figured what the hell.” Lindsay took out a pen and wrote her phone number on the palm of his hand. Jake went back to his motorcycle not before kissing her on the cheek. “When are you home tonight?!” “6 o’clock!” “I’ll call you at 6:01!” he smiled and took off. “You’re never home at 6 o’clock.” Bobby commented as they walked to his car. “I don’t have a trial this week.” “And why did you write your number on his hand? You’ve got calling cards.” “I ran out of cards.” She began to sound impatient. “This guy’s a pediatrician? Doesn’t he scare the kids off? Are you sure it’s safe for you to hang out with him? And what’s with the leather jacket?” Bobby just kept going on and on. At some point Lindsay stopped walking. “Don’t worry dad, I’ll be careful.” “Funny.” He looked at her. “What do you want me to say Bobby? You are so protective.” They got in the car. “What can I do Linds? I’m just looking out for you. You’re my friend.” “I know you are, and it’s sweet. But I’m fine, really. Don’t worry… now start the car cause we’re gonna be late for our meeting.” “We have a staff meeting?” “Yes. And I’m the one who needs looking out for…” “Ok, you’ve made your point.” Bobby smiled as he looked at her. In return, she couldn’t help but laugh. Bobby started the car and drove off. ******** “Hey Helen.” “Hey Ellenor, what’s up?” “Ok. What are you doing here? I thought you and Bobby agreed to plea this one out.” “Yeah, we did. I just came by to see Lindsay. Where is she?” “Don’t know. I just came back from court.” “Oh. Is Bobby in?” “In his office.” “Thanks.” Helen walked the small distance from Ellenor’s desk to Bobby’s office and opened the door. Bobby immediately looked up. “Helen! No knocking, huh?” “Yeah, sorry… listen,” She didn’t even give a second glance to her invasion of his privacy and got right down to business. “Where’s Lindsay?” “Oh. She went home for the day.” “Really?” “I was as surprised as you, don’t worry.” “It’s not even six o’clock!” “Yeah, well… she and Jake probably want to catch up on old times and talk, y’know?” “Oh I know…” She smiled mischievously. “What?” “Well, it’s just that Jake and Lindsay never had too much talking if you know what I mean.” “Well, I’m happy for her.” And he really did try his best to do that. “Besides… that’s not Lindsay.” “Come on Bobby.” “What?” “And what were you guys exactly doing when you were together?” “That was different.” He insisted. “How so?” “They were in love.” Bobby stumbled through Helen’s silence. “Huh huh.” Helen gave him an unbelieving look and headed towards the door. “See you later Bobby.” “Bye.” He replied, not caring for her tone, or to what she meant by it. How could she say that…? How could she think that…? He was just overprotective… Lindsay was his friend… that was it… he was sure of it. Or… was he really…? ******** Is there any chance for feedback...? you'll get the next part sooner. (now that's cheap blackmail... shame on me!) love, michal. Title: Out of reach, part 2. Author: Michal. Hashavit@research.haifa.ac.il Summary: It’s around the end of the second season. ******* A week later Bobby paced in his office back and forward. He couldn’t relax, nor stop thinking about Lindsay. He finally caved and got out of his office towards Rebecca’s desk. “Where is she?!” “Bobby, will you calm down?” “I don’t like her being late. She’s never late!” “Well, she is now. You’re never that upset when Ellenor’s late. And she’s always late.” “Hey!” Ellenor pouted. “Sorry. Just trying to make a point.” “Which is?” Bobby became more and more irritated and annoyed. “What’s wrong with Lindsay having some fun? What did you think? She’ll stay locked up in this office forever?” Bobby was now mad. “It’s ten o’clock.” He said with a stern look. Rebecca gave up and Bobby went back to his office, trying to get some work done. But he couldn’t. The pile of papers that were pilled up on his desk since yesterday was still there. Bobby sat down and took the first file, opening it and reading it’s title. He must have been reading the same line for about a hundred times cause he was still in the same paragraph he was in ten minutes ago when he heard the main door opens. He walked up to see who it was. Lindsay arrived at work that day at quarter past ten. She immediately met Rebecca and Ellenor’s eyes. “So, how was the date?” Ellenor couldn’t resist the temptation. “Good.” She smiled to herself as she hung up her coat. “What was that? The third date this week?” Rebecca inquired as well. “Yep.” “I take it you guys are having fun.” “We are.” She sat at her desk. Rebecca and Ellenor saw they didn’t get anywhere with their subtle questions and Lindsay’s incredibly short answers, so they approached her desk and began the interrogation. “Will you stop being so mysterious?” “Yes.” Ellenor eagerly stood by Rebecca’s demand and emphatically added “We want to know.” Lindsay laughed and happily replied “Ok, what do you want to know?” “Lindsay?” Bobby’s angry voice came from his office. He got out and looked at her. “In my office.” Everybody’s smiles were exchanged with an exasperated expression. Everybody except Lindsay of course, who had no clue as to what was going on. She just got up and walked inside his office. “Bobby, what’s wrong?” he voice was so sweet and she looked glowing. Something that he desperately tried to ignore. So he started. His voice rising with each word he said. “I don’t expect you to stay locked up in this office forever and I don’t expect you to come to work everyday at eight… but I do expect you to call in and let us know if you’re late to work that day and I don’t care if it’s some guy you’ve met yesterday and spent the night with or a guy you’ve known since college! It’s disrespectful to this firm and it’s unprofessional! So don’t do it again!!!” He finished his incredibly long sentence, steamed up more than ever. Lindsay was silent. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. “Bobby, technically I was late in an hour.” She said very quietly “And you all knew I had a date last night so I could be late today.” Bobby almost spoke, yet Lindsay stopped him. “And don’t you EVER speak to me like you did right now or yell at me.” She looked him straight in the eyes, anger and hurt flickering in her eyes. Bobby wasn’t convinced. “I know that those wild meaningless nights are very familiar to you but it doesn’t explain you being late.” Bobby learned from Lindsay how to speak soft, quiet and hurtful words. “Excuse me?” She was astonished at his latest words. “Wild meaningless nights?” She repeated and at that moment Bobby realized he had gone too far. “I just meant…” “Yeah, I know what you meant Bobby.” She was so hurt and Bobby just wanted to take his words back. But he knew he couldn’t. “You know what Bobby?” she added dangerously “Go to hell.” ******** “Rebecca, can you give me the Mackenzie file?” “Sure, hang on.” Bobby had spent his day locked up in his office, not wanting to get out and see Lindsay in the minor possibility that she had returned to the office after storming out of his this morning. Yet she wasn’t there. “Where’s Lindsay?” He asked. “Court.” Ellenor quickly answered, almost as if she were expecting the question. “Well, at least she’s doing that right.” He half whispered as he browsed his messages. “Bobby.” Ellenor gave him a look. “What’s so terrible about being late?” “Yeah, let it go.” Jimmy walked pass him to the unfinished library. “Excuse me, if I need anybody’s help, I’ll ask for it.” Bobby became annoyed. “Here’s the file.” Rebecca handed it to him, but didn’t let it go as Bobby tried to take it. “Will you stop acting like this? Look at what she’s doing with the office here. She’s working hard. Stop punishing her just because you can’t handle her go… never mind.” Bobby pulled the file and started walking to his office. “I don’t like the way she’s changed since that Jake’s been here.” “Sure. Cause you love her.” Bobby turned a sharp 180 turn, astonished at Rebecca’s words. Everybody was finally quiet. He stared at Rebecca and then at everybody else. “Just get back to work, ok?” he said with a weak voice and got back to his office. ******** Bobby pulled his car next to Lindsay’s apartment and walked up the stairs. He had no idea what he was about to say but he did know that he wanted her forgiveness. And for that, as stubborn as he was, he just knew he had to apologize. After a few knocks on her door she finally opened it. “Bobby!” She was surprised and obviously expecting somebody else. “What are you doing here?” He examined her looking stunned. She was wearing a short black dress with just a few thin straps forming the shape of an x on her bared back. His heart skipped a beat and his primary instinct was to take her in his arms. He tried to calm himself down, convincing himself that it was just the physical attraction ‘Come on, chill. Yes, she looks… incredibly sexy.’ He swallowed hard as he was staring at her, forgetting his point. Then, he smiled teasingly. “Haven’t you had enough last night?” To this smart-ass comment Lindsay sighed with impatience and slammed the door. Yet unfortunately for her, Bobby pushed his body inside and stopped her from slamming the door. “No! Lindsay, come on, I’m sorry. I came by to apologize.” “Good start.” She stated coldly. “May I come in?” “Sure.” She let him in and stood in front of him. “I’m sorry about this morning. I was out of line.” “And a jerk.” She added. “Yes, and a jerk.” He smiled ever so slightly. “I guess I was a little jealous.” “I don’t like you thinking I’m that shallow.” “I don’t think that.” He said meaningfully. “Then what’s with the comments?” “My only way of expressing how I feel?” He tried his best luck with that explanation. “Yes, I know that way of expression a bit too much.” She smiled understandingly. “And I look out for you.” “I’m not sixteen Bobby.” “But you’re acting like it!” “Is this that way of expression again?” she couldn’t believe he didn’t let it go. “Come on Linds, I’m just worried about you. You’re going out… with Jake I assume.” “And is that a problem?” “No, it’s just you’re almost naked and it’s night in the middle of November.” “I’m almost naked?” Lindsay was amused at his reaction. “Yes! Don’t get me wrong. It looks… good, really good. But…” “Bobby, you’re being over protective.” She came close and put her hand on his chest. “I’m fine, and I appreciate the worry.” “But…” she shut him up with her finger. “And I’m not changing the dress.” She smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “Now get out of here, I’ve got a date. She smiled sweetly and went to put her high-healed black shoes. “Lindsay?” “Yeah?” Bobby gathered the courage to speak. “What if I said that…” she put on her shoes and moved close in front of him. “Yeah?” “What if I said that…” He softened his tone. “I care for you.” He softly tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and looked deeply in her eyes. “And I’ve missed you.” Lindsay, astonished at his statement, was speechless. Her eyes were focused on his and for a second she broke their locked gazes and lowered her look. Bobby needed to know her response so he gently raised her head to him with his finger. “Lindsay?” “Then I would say you’re terribly late.” She said with pain and acceptance. “But what if…” “No ifs Bobby.” She was so close to him, yet out of reach. “I gave you plenty of opportunities Bobby. You’ve missed your chance. I can’t get into this with you one more time.” “Is it because of Jake?” “No. Well, partly. But mainly…” Bobby came to the terrible realization by himself. “It’s because of you.” “Yeah.” She smiled sadly at him. “I was in love with you Bobby. I really was. And you know that better than anybody. And I do love you. But I can’t do this again. I promised to myself… I just can’t.” “Oh.” Bobby lowered his eyes. “You understand?” “Yeah, I think I do… well, I have to go.” “Ok.” She walked him to the door and opened it. “Lindsay.” He quietly added, his eyes staring at the floor. “What?” “I didn’t mean what I said to you this morning.” “I know.” She smiled her amazing smile again. “No, I mean… about our nights being meaningless. They weren’t. Were they?” he raised his head to look at her. Lindsay nodded sweetly. “They weren’t.” Bobby wanted so desperately to reach her, touch her, kiss her. But instead he just left, going down the stairs, attempting not to loose balance and fall, attempting not to cry… in his way out he stumbled through Jake. “Oh hello. It’s you again. Donnell, right?” “Yes.” Bobby was just anxious to leave. “You don’t have to worry about Lindsay and you don’t have to stop by and take care of her. She’s a big girl.” “She’s my friend.” Bobby said emphatically. “Well, she can take care of herself. She’s in good hands.” He dismissed Bobby and walked up the stairs towards Lindsay’s apartment. ******** How are you enjoing it so far? Have I mentioned I love feedback? good or bad, as long as it's constructive... :) love, michal. Title: Out of reach, part 3. Author: Michal. Hashavit@research.haifa.ac.il Summary: It’s around the end of the second season. ******** As the days went by, Bobby realized he really was late in revealing his feelings to Lindsay. He has waited too long. He wasn’t even aware that he felt that way. They were friends, good friends. Especially after they had solved their big fight involving the partnership. Lindsay, like always, was proven to be right and the changes she has done lately were all for the best. Bobby cared for her and was finally convinced they could remain friends. It was Jake who had made the difference. He was the one who made him look at Lindsay and remember how she really was when she smiled or got excited and became passionate about something that wasn’t work. The way she used to blush or laugh when they made love. But like always, he remembered too late. So he gave up and decided to let her to be happy, even if it was with Jake. It was a late Monday afternoon when Bobby got back from court to the office, ready to fulfill his recent resolution. But as he came inside, he immediately noticed something was wrong. Lindsay wasn’t at her desk, which was too suspicious considering it was five o’clock. “Hey Bec. Where’s Lindsay?” he was sure he again went home early. But everybody’s faces indicated something had happened. Rebecca hung up the phone and looked worriedly at him. “Bec, what’s wrong?” “Listen, Lindsay’s alright, it’s not as bad as it sounds.” “What? What happened Bec?” “She and Jake had an accident on his motorcycle.” “What?!” Bobby felt a cold wave going through his body. “She’s ok. They just need somebody to sign some papers.” Rebecca tried in vain to calm him down. “Bobby, relax. It’s just a few scratches and bruises… “ “Rebecca! Where is she?!” He was now yelling. “St. Anne’s.” Bobby immediately rushed out of the office and ran down the stairs, not even waiting for the elevator. His heart beat like crazy as he started the car and drove as fast as he could to the hospital. ‘Come on, she’s ok. Bec said so herself.’ He tried to calm himself but couldn’t. He was so angry with Jake and that stupid motorcycle, but he was so concerned for Lindsay. He wanted to scream, he wanted to yell, he wanted to see her… He ran inside the emergency room and looked for her. “Excuse me, Lindsay Dole, where is she?!” He startled the innocent nurse who walked by. But she didn’t get to answer as Bobby spotted Lindsay sitting in a small room in the corner of the corridor and rushed to her. “Linds! Are you ok?” he ran to hug her. “Yeah… ouch.” She whispered with pain. “Sorry. I hurt you, right?” He pulled back to observe her. “No, I’m ok.” She looked at him, her face all scratched up and a nasty bruise on her right arm. “What are you talking about? You’re not ok.” He looked at her, feeling her pain. “It’s just a sour rib.” She became silent with pain. Bobby raised his hand to stroke her cheek and softly whispered, “What happened?” “I don’t know. All I know is that Jake couldn’t stop.” Her voice shook with fear like she reenacted the accident. “Hey, don’t worry. It’s over.” He hugged her more gently and stroked her hair. “I’m here, it’ll be ok.” He never would have let go of her if Jake hadn’t come in. “Baby, how are you feeling?” Jake entered the room and immediately examined her bruises. “Jake, you don’t have to be the doctor here. I’m ok. The nurse took really good care of me and I’m fine.” She answered. “How about you?” “I’m fine too.” He smiled. “We got out alright from this.” He hugged her. “But, unfortunately I have to stay here.” “Why?!” “Since I’m ok, duty calls.” He looked at Bobby, who immediately understood his silent request. “I’ll take her home.” “Thanks.” He nodded. “Come on Linds, we’ve got some papers to sign.” ”Sure.” She got up from the bed she was sitting on. “I’ll call you.” Jake kissed her softly on the lips. In light of Bobby’s previous decision, he tried, yet couldn’t bear the sight of them together. Especially kissing. He shot Jake a dirty look before they left and added, “She’s in good hands you said?” “Bobby!” Lindsay quietly yet emphatically warned him not to start. Jake just sighed and walked away as well. It was approximately eight o’clock when Bobby finally got Lindsay home ok. He helped her up the stairs and came inside. “Thanks Bobby.” She put her keys on the counter and checked to see if she had any messages. There was one from Helen. “Hey babe, just calling to see how you are. Rebecca said you and Jake had an accident but I get it that you’re ok. I’ll come by tomorrow. Right now I’m stuck in the office on this damn B&E. I hope you’re feeling better, I was really worried about you… ok bye.” Lindsay smiled at the sound of her dear friend’s voice. “We were all pretty worried about you.” Bobby quietly said. “I know you were. That’s sweet.” “I was worried about you.” He came close. “Come on, I’ll help you get into bed, I know that rib must hurt still.” “No, I can handle it. Don’t worry.” “It’s not that.” He smiled. “I just want to help.” Lindsay tried to get her jacket off and groaned with pain. “Ouch… damn it.” “Come on, let me help you.” Bobby took off her jacket for her. “Thanks.” “No problem.” Bobby followed Lindsay to her bedroom. “Wow! A lot has changed around here.” “Yeah, I guess so. It’s been a long time.” They stared at each other. “Yes, it has been… come on, let’s get you changed.” Lindsay unbuttoned her cardigan and Bobby slid it off her. She removed her jeans, feeling a bit uncomfortable, and stayed with a black undershirt. “Can you get me the hum… the nightgown in the top drawer?” “Sure.” Bobby got it out and brought it to her. “Here you go.” ‘Thanks.” She looked at him, awkward at the situation. “Can you… turn around?” “Sure.” Bobby sensed her discomfort. At the same time she was hurting, he tried so hard to resist her almost naked body. His new resolution faded into thin air as he turned around. “Ouch.” He heard her moan in pain and quickly turned back. “Come on Linds, let me help you.” “I don’t want you to see me naked.” She smiled. “Lindsay, It’s not like it’s the first time.” He flashed her his smile in return so she couldn’t refuse. Bobby stripped off her undershirt as he swallowed hard at the sight of her beautiful body he had missed so much. “Ok, give me the nighty.” She turned around. “Lindsay, I’m not taking my cloths off.” She laughed. “I know. Just unhook my braw for me. I can take it from there.” “Oh, ok.” Bobby did as requested. He slowly unhooked her braw in order to savor the warm sweet touch of her bared back. Lindsay went to take off the braw not before saying “Ok, close your eyes for ten seconds.” “Ok.” “Promise?” “Yeah yeah…” He closed his eyes as Lindsay took off her braw and put her nightgown on. As she turned around she saw Bobby’s eyes opened. “Bobby!” “What?” “You opened your eyes!” “Just now!” He smiled. She looked at him with disbelief. “Ok, maybe a bit sooner.” “Uh uh… You’re lucky I’m in no position to hurt you. I’m just gonna brush my teeth… stay here.” Lindsay ordered kindly. When she came back she got inside the bed. “Thanks Bobby.” “No problem. You need anything else?” “Well… I’m not sleepy at all. Can you get me my book from the living room?” “Lindsay! You need to get some sleep.” “It’s eight o’clock!” She complained. “Ok, I’ll get you your book.” “Thank you.” She smiled sweetly. Bobby went to bring her the book, but by the time he returned she was sound to sleep. “Not tired, ah?” He looked at her sleeping and put the book on the nightstand. He sat beside her, stroking her cheek, smoothening her hair and leaning close to kiss her cheek and reluctantly leaving her apartment. ********* “How are you feeling?” Bobby showed up on Lindsay’s doorstep the next day. “I’m fine. Bobby, what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be working.” “I am.” He smiled a goofy smile. “Taking care of you is hard work.” He let himself in. “You’re so stubborn!” “Bobby!” “What?” he chuckled. “I’m gonna loose a lot of potential business if you don’t get better. It’s a strategic decision.” Lindsay couldn’t help but laugh. “What’s that?” “Chicken soup.” He said as if it were obvious. “I’m not sick, I don’t have a fever. I have a few scratches, that’s all.” “So? It’s good for you. You have to eat something so you won’t get too skinny. You think all those clients come to you just cause you’re a Harvard graduate?” “You’re pushing it Donnell. Rebecca’s not the only one who can swat.” She closed the door behind her and went to sit down on the couch. “You’re not in bed?!” His face obviously showed concern. “Same thing.” She dismissed him as she turned on the television. “It’s not the same thing! You should be resting in bed!” “Yes dad.” She smiled teasingly at him. “Lindsay.” He sat next to her, ready for his speech as he realized what she was watching. “Is that ‘Days of our lives’?” “Don’t you start.” She laughed. “It’s exactly like being on bed. You’ll be amazed to discover how minimal brain activity you need for this.” Bobby looked incredulously at her, holding back a laugh. “No, seriously. Sami just woke up. She’s been in a coma since the car accident with Austin.” “Who’s Austin?” Bobby tried to pretend being interested. “He’s Will’s father. Well, actually… he’s not. But he doesn’t know that.” She got all excited as she continued to explain the situation. “See, Sami wanted to break Austin and Carry up…” “Who’s Carry?” “She’s Sami’s sister and Austin’s girlfriend. Well, actually… she’s not his girlfriend anymore.” “Lindsay!” He stopped her. “I now understand why you’re the constitutional expert and not me.” She laughed. “But I see you’re enjoying this cheesy soap so I’ll just warm up the soup.” “Warm up for you as well.” “Lindsay, it’s ten o’clock in the morning! And I’m not sick!” “So? I don’t want to eat alone.” She pleaded with a smile he couldn’t resist. “Two bowls of soup coming right up.” He declared. “Thank you!” She said sweetly. He couldn’t help but love her. Twenty minutes later Bobby and Lindsay sat in front of the TV set, drinking soup under the covers. “So let me get it, we don’t like Sami, right?” “Yes! You finally got it. I knew passing the bar wasn’t an accident after all.” She laughed. “The soup was great. Just what I needed.” She grabbed the plates. “What are you doing?” “I’m taking it to the kitchen.” “No you’re not. I’ll wash the dishes, you rest!” He gave his order and took the plates to the kitchen. “You are going to make one hell of a husband one day! Making soup, washing the dishes… I’m almost jealous of your future wife.” She walked in to the kitchen. “Don’t worry, I don’t think she’ll take your place… if she even exists.” He murmured as he washed the first plate. “Come on Bobby, don’t say that. You’ll meet the right one one day.” “Maybe I already have and it didn’t work out.” He commented seriously yet leisurely in hurtful acceptance. Lindsay lowered her eyes to the floor and couldn’t help but remember the conversation they had awhile back. She suddenly felt coldness on her face as she realized Bobby just splashed soap water on her nose. “What was that?” she held back a smile, trying in vain to appear mad. “You were too clean.” He replied in an innocent tone and a grin plastered on his face. “Oh yeah?” “Yeah.” “Oh yeah?” “Lindsay, you’re not gonna play the bully here, are you? Cause…” He couldn’t finish the sentence as she splashed him as well. “You cornered me to the sink! You deserve it!” “Yeah yeah…” Bobby grabbed the towel and got very close to her. “I don’t want to take the blame for you being even more sick… or wet.” He softly wiped the water out of her face with the towel. “You should get clean too…” She smiled. “After all, you are going to work.” She put her hand on his and led it to his face to gently wipe his wet face as well. Thanking him for making her feel better just by the look in her eyes. They were disturbed by the knock on the door. Lindsay quickly went to open the door and left Bobby in the kitchen. Lindsay opened the door to discover Jake. “Hey! Jake!” “Hey baby, how are you? He came inside and gently kissed her on the lips. “I’m ok. Actually, I’m not alo…” She didn’t get a chance to finish her sentence. “Lindsay! Carry and Austin are going to tell Sami the truth!” Bobby called out as he watched the TV set enthusiastically from the kitchen. As he stepped out he saw Jake. “Jake. Hi.” “Bobby.” He nodded. “Is he here since last night?!” Jake turned to Lindsay in a questioning and slightly accusing glance. “No!” She quickly answered. “I just came by before work to see how she was.” Bobby concluded plainly. “Oh. Ok… That’s nice of you. Thanks for last night by the way.” He politely thanked him as he held Lindsay’s hand. “Sure, no problem.” Bobby suddenly felt intruding as he saw the couple in front of him. “Linds, I’m gonna go. I’ve got a lot of work to do. Feel better. Ok?” He grabbed his jacket from the couch. “Wait, Bobby. I’ll walk you out.” She opened the door for him, leaving Jake inside. “Thanks for everything, I feel a lot better.” “I did nothing.” Bobby dismissed himself. “You did a lot.” She smiled thankfully and kissed him on the cheek. As Bobby stepped out, he heard the door close and Lindsay and Jake talking. “What are you watching?” “You mean what are WE watching? ‘Days of our lives’. I can explain it all to you.” “Oh. I can tell you all about the medical stuff.” “Really?” Bobby heard Lindsay’s laugh echoing as he walked down the stairs. ******** So, what did you think about this one? love, michal :) Title: Out of reach, part 4. It’s been a week!” Lindsay was too exhausted to defend herself to Rebecca, knowing full well she has Bobby to deal with next, being the overprotective friend he had always been. She sat down on her chair, anxious to get busy with all the files on her desk. Ellenor Eugene and Jimmy came in about five minutes later, all with the same reaction. “What are you doing here?” Lindsay sighed. “I work here. And not for long if I hear that question again.” They stared at her. “Sorry.” Ellenor commented. “Yeah, sorry Lindsay.” Jimmy had a pouted look on his face. “How are you?” Eugene asked. “I’m fine, thanks.” “Wanna help me out in the Johnson case?” “When?” “Two weeks from today. I’ve got a suppression hearing scheduled for this afternoon.” “Sure. I’d love to.” She was glad to get back to work. “Good. Now don’t be scaring the jury, you tough biker.” He chuckled, She laughed, expecting a good day. The last to arrive was Bobby, which was quite unusual. But in the last week, knowing Lindsay was not going to be there every morning, Bobby had no problems with coming late to work. Or in his case… not early. The minute he laid eyes on Lindsay it was the last straw. “What are you doing here?” she sighed and put her head in her hands, not bothering to repeat the answer everybody else was now yelling in unison. “She works here!!!” Bobby was shocked as Lindsay managed a small smile. Bobby looked at her confused. “Did I say something wrong?” “No, you didn’t, that’s ok.” She got up to stand behind her desk as he stood in front of her. “How are you feeling?”” “Good, thank you.” “Can’t wait to get started ah?” “Yeah.” She had always known Bobby could read her better than anyone. “I’ve got a case for you.” “Ah…” She looked at Eugene. “Taken.” Eugene declared. “What?” Bobby mumbled. “Lindsay’s taken. Sorry Bobby, I snatched her first.” She smiled apologetically. “Sorry…” “No problems.” He smiled back and entered his office. It was a peaceful day for everybody and Lindsay was great full for her work. At 1 0’clock Jake arrived at the office. “Ready for lunch?” “Jake! What are you doing here?” “Since you’re determined to go to work so soon, I’ve decided you should use a break.” “Well, I can’t. sorry… I’m busy.” “Well, I have to talk to you anyway.” “What? Why?” “It’s just… something came up.” He looked serious to Lindsay’s concern. “Do you want to go in to the conference room?” “Sure.” Lindsay immediately got up and led Jake with her hand inside. “New York?!” “Yeah. They offered me an attending job in the peads ER.” She was astounded. “Oh… are… are you going to take it?” “Yes.” Silence. “Lindsay, it’s been my dream ever since I got out of med school.” “I know.” She smiled understandingly. “When do you have to leave?” “As soon as I can.” They looked at each other in sadness until Jake got up and came close to her. “I’m gonna miss you.” She hugged him tight as she felt the tears forming in her eyes. “You don’t have to.” “What?” She mumbled as she pulled back to look at him. Jake ran his hand through her hair as he pushed it back and whispered to her ear “Come with me.” “What?!” “Come with me! New York is not that far away… we’ll have a great time together.” He held her hands. “Jake… I don’t know. I work here… I can’t leave my job.” “You’ll get another job… New York is filled with good law firms.” “Jake.” “Don’t you wanna come with me?” “It’s no that simple. I’ve worked hard for my reputation here… and for this firm… this partnership… I can’t just leave it. My life is here, my work, my friends…” “So you won’t come?” “Well… “ She didn’t want to say goodbye to the person who had made her so happy the last couple of months. “Can I think about it?” “Sure.” He moved to kiss her gently as their kiss gradually escalated to a deeper one. “I’ll call you tonight.” “Ok.” She nodded as he left the conference room. “How long have they been there?” Bobby asked Rebecca as soon as he heard Jake had come by. “Not long. Ten minutes I think.” At that moment the door opened and Jake walked out the conference room and leaving the office as he gave a polite hello to everybody. Bobby gave him a suspicious look, wondering how much more pain he can possibly inflict Lindsay. Before he managed to go into the conference room and see Lindsay, she came out herself. As soon as she stepped out, she observed everybody staring at her, including Bobby. “Is everything alright?” Bobby quietly asked. “Yeah, everything’s fine.” “Jake looked pretty upset Lindsay.” Rebecca added. “Yeah, he’s leaving.” Her voice shook to her recent words. “What do you mean he’s leaving?” Ellenor joined everybody’s confusion. “He’s going away. He got a really good job offer.” “Where?” Eugene interjected. “New York.” Lindsay wiped the corner of her eye, trying to stop one tear, which surfaced in her eye and threatened to shed. “Are you going with him?” Jimmy raised the question everybody was too afraid to ask. Lindsay had no answer, even to herself. So she just went to sit at her desk. Bobby became frightened by her reaction. “Linds?” He begged in his eyes for a reply. “I don’t know.” To that shouting silence and locked gazes the phone and door interrupted. Ellenor and Eugene’s client walked inside and Rebecca answered the call. Jimmy suddenly remembered he had to be in court and everybody but Lindsay and Bobby became occupied. Bobby took a few steps towards her desk. “Bobby, relax. I haven’t made my decision yet.” “Lindsay, I know that, and I know you’re supposed to make this decision alone and I don’t want to pressure you into…” “Bobby.” She cut him off. Trying to prevent what he nevertheless said. “Please don’t go.” The tear escaped her eye but failed to be seen by Bobby. “Bobby, it’s for you.” Rebecca handed him the phone receiver. “I’ll take it in my office.” and he left, leaving Lindsay to drown in her uncertainty. ******** “Lindsay, calm down.” Helen tried to talk some sense into Lindsay, who paced nervously back and forth in Helen’s office. “I can’t calm down Helen. I mean… how the hell am I supposed to make this kind of a decision?!!!” she sank in the chair in front of Helen. “What am I gonna do…?” she was near tears. “Sorry babe.” “Ok, I’ve got an idea. Let’s just make a list of pros and cons.” “Ok.” “There’s Jake, who makes me feel so good… who I know loves me, who’s great in bed…” she smiled to herself. “Then there’s work. Bobby, who’s never gonna let me quit… my reputation at court, which I’ve worked really hard for.” Her voice nearly cracked. “Then there’s you…” Her expression softened as she took Helen’s hand in hers. “And my family… friends… everybody at the office… Bobby…” “Bobby.” Helen repeated quietly Lindsay’s last word, which she unnoticeably said twice, realizing what Lindsay hasn’t. “What?” Lindsay turned to her. “Oh my god, I can’t believe it… how couldn’t I have noticed it before…? It’s Bobby.” She very emphatically concluded. “What? Helen, what are you talking about? This has nothing to do with Bobby! It’s about Jake.” “Oh yeah? Then why did he come up twice in one sentence?!” “Helen, come on… don’t give me that… I’m having enough of a hard time.” Lindsay’s voice became softer. She looked at Helen, not knowing what to do or say or feel. “Linds, four months ago you told me right here in this office that you loved him. Did Jake change that? I mean… do you love Jake or do you still have feelings for… Bobby?” “It’s a different kind of love. I mean… Jake is a college sweetheart… and… Bobby is someone I’ve been through a lot with , but… I can’t go down that path again with him. We’re all wrong for each other.” “You are?” Helen gave her unbelieving look. “Well…” She couldn’t look up to face her. “Why are you bringing this up now?!” “You brought it up.” “Why is everybody bringing this up now…?” She whined. “Who’s everybody?” Lindsay didn’t answer, which only increased Helen’s curiosity. “Lindsay! Did Bobby say something to you?!” “Yeah…” “Well, do I have to drag it out of you?” “He kind of asked me if my love statement was still valid…” “Did he make one of his own?” “Helen, what are you talking about… Bobby and I were never about love.” “Yeah right.” “No, seriously! We just didn’t talk about that kind of stuff. Bobby would never go near that sentiment.” “So what DID he say?” He said he cared for me and that he missed me…” She remembered his exact words. “And that’s not a statement?!” “No, it isn’t!” “Come on Lindsay, for a guy as closed up as Bobby it’s a big statement! I mean… do you have to hear the word ‘love’?” “Yes! I do. Why do I always have to say it?! Besides… it’s not about Bobby! It’s supposed to be about Jake…” She put her head in her hands as she laced her fingers through her hair. “I’m sorry Linds…” “Yeah, me too.” ******** “What’s you making?” “Pb&J sandwitch.” “Where’d you get it? It’s eleven o’clock at night… Bobby?” “Uh? What? Bec, I didn’t hear you.” ”Ok, what’s wrong?” Rebecca sat next to Bobby on the couch. “Well, let’s see. It’s eleven o’clock at night and I’m still working, the judge’s not willing to continue the Davidson case and a certain partner in this office is about to resign.” He said out loud. “Ok, let’s talk about the last thing you’ve just mentioned.” “Why?” He asked impatiently. Rebecca got annoyed. “Bobby, do you ever wonder why you’re sitting alone in your office at eleven o’clock at night?!” “Cause I’m afraid to leave incase the office secretary might get cranky and kill me.” Bobby looked adorably at her and smiled his goofy smile as he took a bite of his sandwitch. Rebecca couldn’t help but smile. “Bobby, now seriously. The certain partner who’s about to quit… do you know if she’s gonna? Have you talked to her?” “No.” He half sighed and leaned on the couch. “I did ask her not to leave.” “Really?!” Bec was amazed. “What did you say?” Bobby answered like it was obvious. “Please don’t leave.” Rebecca took the pillow and smacked him with it. “Ouch! Rebecca! What was that for?” “That’s what you said?!” “That kind of sums it up, don’t you agree?” “No!!!” she then lowered her voice. “Didn’t you tell her that you… love her?” Bobby literally chocked on his sandwitch as he heard her say that terrifying word. “Bobby?” He started coughing and Rebecca patted him on the back. As soon as he settled down he shot her a questioning glance. “Are you truing to kill me?!” “Hey, I just saved your life!” She snapped. “The fact that you need to be rescued just cause hearing the word ‘love’ makes you choke is not my fault!” He sighed. “Bec, it has nothing to do with love. She’s my friend.” “Yeah, I know what kind of friendship you used to have with her.” “Even so…” “Bobby! You slept together… don’t tell me it has no meaning.” “It does, but… why does love has to be its meaning? The reason we did what we did was so we wouldn’t have to deal with that kind of crap.” He murmured. “But it got a little out of hand, right? Lindsay said that herself. She said she loved you!” “Remind me not to tell you things. You never forget it.” “No, I don’t. cause I think she still has those feelings. And so do you, even though you don’t admit it.” “She doesn’t. trust me.” He looked down bitterly. “How do you know?” “Cause I asked her ok?! She doesn’t.” “She said no?” “Well, not in those words.” “What words exactly?” “Bec, can we just drop this? I don’t know what she feels. She’s too caught up in Jake to notice.” As bobby’s voice softened the room became the silent background to it. “And you?” “What?” “Do you know what you feel?” She asked quietly, not expecting an honest answer. “Of course I do.” He looked up at Rebecca. “I’m in love with her.” ******** Hi guys. how was this one? Lindsay, we don’t have to drag this out. If you don’t want to, just say so.” “It’s not that I don’t want to! It’s that I can’t…” “Why not?” “It’s too complicated.” “Is there another guy?” “No no no… I promise you there isn’t. It’s just that… I need to work out my life here instead of running away and starting fresh.” “That’s ok. I guess I’ve always known you’re not the same person I fell in love with in college. It’s just that…” He came close to her and caressed her hair. “It was so easy to fall in love with you all over again. It came… natural.” He moved even closer and kissed her. “It was my mistake. I never should have let you go from the beginning.” She smiled. “Are you gonna call? Let me know how you’re doing?” “Sure… hey, maybe we’ll meet again in ten years at our reunion. You’ll bring your husband and I’ll bring my wife.” “Oh, we’ve got a long way till then.” “I don’t think so… I can already see you in a beautiful white dress. A year from now… maybe two.” He kept guessing. “Getting married to a lucky bastard I haven’t met yet.” “Yeah, right.” She dismissed his assumption. “Anyways, I have to go. If I stay here another second I might never leave.” “Be my guess.” She smiled with hope. He looked at her again as his expression became more serious. “Ok.” They hugged tightly and Lindsay escorted him to the door. As Jake came down the stairs he again stumbled through Bobby. “Oh man, we’ve got to start meeting like this.” “Tell me about it.” Bobby answered. “What are you doing here?” “What’s it to you?” “Hey, Bobby… calm down.” Bobby sighed. “Just like you. I came to see Lindsay… I think.” Suddenly it all became clear to Jake. “I guess I’ve already met the lucky bastard.” He mumbled to himself. “What?” “Nothing. I’m just glad you’re not making the same mistake I did.” “Uh?” “Don’t let her go Bobby.” He patted him on the back and turned to leave. At the last minute Bobby turned around. “Hey Jake.” “Yeah?” Jake noticed Bobby’s hand extended to his. “Good luck in New York.” They shook hands. “Thanks.” And he left. Jake was gone and on his way to New York. And Bobby… Bobby stood in front of Lindsay’s door and suddenly felt his knees go weak. He came to tell her he loved her. But the fear took over his decision. Flashbacks appeared out of nowhere. “I miss the sex… I miss being held by you… I miss you… Because I’m in love with you… I’ll make do with the memories… it was some secrete while it lasted… I’m right here… I can’t lie to her Bobby! I just can’t!! This is the last time….” He couldn’t hold back the tears. He loved her. He stared at her door, imagined how beautiful she must have looked. He wanted to crash inside and kiss her… kiss… her… he felt his balbitations getting stronger. He struggled with his fear as he ran his fingers through his hair with despair and quickly went up the few steps he had left… he brought his hand to knock on her door… But he couldn’t. He was too afraid. ‘I’m selfish. She doesn’t love me. Why should she give me another chance when I was too stupid to blow the first one.’ He quickly went down the stairs and left the building, getting inside his car and driving as fast as he could to get out of there…. ******** “Good morning.” “Morning.” Everybody welcomed one another to yet another day of work at DYD& F. “So, Lindsay…” Rebecca approached her desk. “You showing up for work means that… you’re staying…?” “Yes.” She smiled. “I’m glad you are, for all of us. We need you. Some more than others.” She continued to herself. “What?” “Nothing… it’s just good that you’re staying. Has Bobby talked to you?” “No, why?” “No reason.” She sighed to herself, wondering what happened. “Is he in? Cause I’ve got to tell him he’s not getting my resignation any time soon.” “Yes, he’s inside.” “Thanks Bec.” “Sure.” Rebecca smiled to her, secretly wishing that if not Bobby than at least Lindsay would bring up the issue. Lindsay knocked on Bobby’s door and then came right inside. “Good morning.” She smiled. “Lindsay… hey.” He looked up from his paperwork. “I just came by to tell you… that I’m not leaving.” Although he had already known about it, hearing it from her mouth and watching her radiant smile and beautiful looks made him even happier. “Oh, really?” He tried to act surprised. “What happened?” “Nothing. I just decided I love Boston… and everything about it.” They looked intently at each other. “Besides, where would I ever find a firm like this in New York?” they laughed. “I’m glad you’re staying Linds.” “Me too. Hey, the library should be finished today and the conference room next week. How could I miss that?” “Yeah, just in time for the annual office party. The thought of mingling without you…” He sighed with a smile. “Yeah only my date is somewhere in New York. I don’t think he’ll be able to make it.” She murmured. “Well, how about we go together?” She laughed out loud. “Didn’t we do that last year?” “Yes, and you remember what happened afterwards?” She blushed. “So this year we’re going as friends?” “That’s right.” Bobby felt a knife being slowly inserted into his chest. He had always known he was lousy at expressing his feelings, but this was the climax of his frustration. He wanted to be her love too. She was his. It was only fair… but her new best friend… he didn’t want that, and he only got mad at himself for not having the courage Lindsay had had. But he was willing to take everything or anything… she had to give. Lindsay stepped out of Bobby’s office, relieved at the new situation. Everything was back to normal. She tried to push back Helen’s words and her own, convincing herself that nothing had changed. That you love her, that you wan to marry her… that you want her to be the mother of your children!” “Jimmy…” bobby became annoyed by Jimmy’s enthusiasm. “He chickened out!” Rebecca concluded. “I did not chicken out! There’s no use of saying anything…” “Why not? You can ask her to the office part.” Rebecca said. “I already did.” “What?” everybody called in unison. “It’s a tradition. Bobby? No way… everything’s ok now.” Helen looked incredulously at her. “Actually, I meant… Jake. So much for not thinking about Bobby.” “Helen!” “What?! Don’t you Helen me. I chose this for myself.” “Now seriously Lindsay… have you chosen to miss Bobby as well?” Lindsay did not know what to say. “What do you mean?” “Look, I’m not suggesting that you don’t have feelings for Jake or that they worth any less since he left… all I’m saying is that Bobby shielded you from your feelings for Bobby and now that he’s gone…” “Helen, I don’t have those feelings anymore. It’s two weeks since Jake left and…” “And what? A month before Jake came to Boston you were in love with Bobby! In love… you said so yourself. I know you wanted to tell her.” “Oh, forget about it.” He quickly dismissed her words as he desperately tried to pretend reading his folder. “It’s not too late you know.” Bobby looked up. “Rebecca, I chose this.” “Did you really?” she said in disbelief. “After I had talked to you that night, I drove to her apartment. I saw Jake leaving and I knew I could tell her that minute.” “Then why didn’t you?” “I don’t know. Maybe the confidence I had when I came to her house that I was going to finally tell her the truth just faded away.” “Why?” “It was something Jake said. He said…” “What?” she encouraged him to continue. “He told me not to let her go. Cause then there’ll be no going back. But the thing is… I already let her go… a long time ago.” “Bobby, a lot has changed since then. You’re a different person now. So is she.” “Exactly. So why she even blink in my direction?” “What? You don’t think she loves you anymore?” “I think I’ve missed my chance with her. The same night she revealed her feelings for me and I said nothing. It’s her turn to push me away. And I don’t blame her. I have a total incapacity when it comes to love and relationships.” “That’s because you’ve never been in a relationship with someone you loved.” “The thing is… I have been. If you could call it a relationship… and I let her go.” “So try and get her back.” “Yeah, but I can’t find a sign that says I should or even could do that…” He sighed. Rebecca looked at him. “Bobby, just look in her eyes, deep inside. And you’ll discover that that sign has always been there. I know it. What you guys have between you two… it’s within your reach. Disclaimer: Only Jake’s mine. The others… they’re David’s. I’m just playing with them… No harm is intended. ******** “It’s pretty silly we’re calling it a Christmas party, you know? We never even bother to change our work cloths.” Lindsay laughed as she and Bobby returned from the courthouse to the office just in time for the party. Their case was over half an hour ago. Either the jury was in a rush to get home or Lindsay’s closing did the trick. They got a ‘not guilty’. For a change, putting a murder defendant back on the street made them happy. He was innocent. It took some energy, long nights of hard work and the famous plan B strategy but they got their wish. The expansion was completed and the office looked bran new. Bobby, who’s been too afraid to take a long look at the office in its entirety, now gathered the courage to do so. And when he finally did, his heart filled with even more love for Lindsay. “Come on, you have to see the conference room.” She grabbed his hand happily as they crowded among the people to enter the empty conference room. As they stepped inside Bobby again was overwhelmed. It was a ‘blue chip’ law firm conference room. But the more he thought about it, it really wasn’t. Maybe just by appearance. In reality, it was their office. It felt theirs. Especially since he knew it was the product of Lindsay’s hard work. “So, what do you think?” She asked in anticipation and a bit of concern. Bobby turned to her and smiled an ear-to-ear grin. “It’s amazing. You did a beautiful job here.” He hugged her tightly. As they pulled apart Bobby looked in her eyes. Her smile gradually faded as she was mesmerized by his intense gaze. “This couldn’t have happened if it weren’t for you Linds.” He made her smile again. “Well, lucky for you I’m more stubborn than you are.” “Nobody’s more stubborn than Bobby.” Ellenor interrupted as she and the others walked inside, holding champagne glasses. “Where have you guys been hiding?” Jimmy handed them both two glasses. “You’ve heard?” Bobby asked. “Quick NG, right?” Eugene said. “Yeah.” “A toast everybody.” Rebecca raised her glass. “Let there be more occasions like this. Thank you Lindsay for convincing our pig headed senior partner here to fix up the place. We’re just happy we haven’t lost you for NY.” Bobby and Lindsay looked at each other. “Or for interior decorating.” Everybody laughed in unison. “Merry Christmas guys!” “Merry Christmas.” They all repeated as they raised their glasses. “Now let’s get out of here. It’s our party.” Rebecca ordered with grace. Everybody stepped outside, as did Lindsay and Bobby. “Lindsay, wait a second.” Bobby was too afraid to touch her again. “Yeah?” She turned around, expecting his words that failed to come. “Nothing.” He smiled shyly. “I better go mingling.” “Bobby, you hate mingling.” “Well, what are YOU going to do?” “I’m just gonna go say hi to Helen.” She turned to Helen’s direction. “Helen!” “Hey sweetie. Merry Christmas.” Helen hugged her gently. “Where have you been? I’ve been looking all over for you.” “Oh, we just got here. We won.” She smiled excitingly. “Yes, I know. Richard’s still in his office fussing about it… listen Linds… I can’t stay long. I’ve got a date.” “Really? Who’s the lucky guy?” “Bobby.” Lindsay’s face turned white. “I’m just kidding. Will you lighten up?” She smiled teasingly, trying to make her laugh. And she did. “It’s David.” Helen’s face was glowing with happiness. “Officer Dave?” Lindsay laughed. Bobby stood in the corner, switching his glass of champagne with the familiar bottle of beer. Stealing glances at Lindsay, talking to Helen. Smiling when she smiled, laughing when she laughed and loving her when… always. In the course of her conversation with Helen, she took off her jacket and remained in a casual light blue blouse and a black skirt. When Helen turned to leave she turned around and caught Bobby looking at her as he leaned on the table next to the library. She joined him, half sitting as well next to him. “What?!” she asked with a smile, wanting to know his reason for staring at her. Bobby just bent over and kissed her. He couldn’t believe he finally did it. He reveled in the touch of her lips on his. It’s been so long… Lindsay didn’t know how to respond. Bobby took the first step, overwhelming her. Something she was always used to do to him. “Bobby…” She whispered after they broke apart. “Is this because of… Jake?” Bobby looked tenderly at her with so much love in his eyes. “No. It’s because of you.” He paused for a second. “Kissing you…” He stroked her hair. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.” Lindsay felt him exposing her soul as he revealed his feelings. She loved him. She was certain of it and at that moment his lips seemed too far away, so she closed the distance immediately. Allowing Bobby to feel more than her lips as she opened her mouth, her tongue searching for his. They were almost invisible in their own shadow. Their slow romantic kiss came to its end and Bobby knew exactly what he wanted to do. “Will you dance with me?” he smiled. “Lead the way.” She laughed and he grabbed her arm and led her to the only place that wasn’t filled with people dancing. The song playing eased the tension as Bobby spun her around as she laughed out loud. “You can dance!” she called out so he would hear her in the loud music. “That’s not all that I can do.” He pulled her close to him, raised his other hand to her cheek and began kissing her passionately before she had time to respond. She could feel her knees go weak as she felt him deepen their kiss more and more. Ellenor, Eugene, Rebecca and Jimmy who stood next to Rebecca’s desk were astounded and smiling as they saw the two quickly drawing away from first base. Bobby’s hand slid around Lindsay’s waist as his other hand slightly disheveled her hair. Their sensual lustful kiss had to be stopped. They both knew people would start looking at them in a matter of seconds if they didn’t stop. It was never really like them… but something came over them. They slowly pulled away, looked at each other and smiled. The song faded away to a slow dance as stepped even closer. Bobby slid his hands around her waist and Lindsay wrapped her arms around him and caressed the back of his neck, playing with his hair, laying her head softly on his shoulder and slowly moving to the music. Even at that second, Lindsay’s mind was racing with thoughts. She remembered the first time she told him she loved him and he stood so far away from her, so out of reach. They were both so out of reach. And now, as she felt every part of his body close to hers she felt happiness overwhelming her. And then… she just smiled. “You do know everybody’s looking at us, right?” She whispered to his ear. “Uh uh.” He smiled. “I don’t care.” He paused for a second and carefully continued. “We’re not going to be recreational this time… right?” “We’re not?” she looked at him with hope. “No. I… I…” He couldn’t get the words out as much as he wanted to, at least not yet. “We’re gonna do this right this time.” “Alright.” Lindsay took a deep breath and smiled a sweet blissful smile. “I can’t stay here anymore. Do you wanna go?” He asked her cautiously. “Bobby, are you thinking what I think you’re thinking?” “No no, I don’t mean it like that!” he tried to reassure her. “Cause that’s ok if you do.” She whispered in his ear as they smiled to each other. “Let’s just take a walk together alone, without all these people around.” “Wouldn’t it be… you know, rude?” He looked at her adorably. “I’ll meet you at the door in 15 minutes. I can’t mingle longer than that.” “Bobby, you can’t mingle at all.” “I know. But I’m willing to try.” He couldn’t believe that once he had her in his arms he let her go, even if it was only for a few minutes. A few minutes that seemed like forever. They didn’t go for a walk after that. They just sat on a bench in a quiet deserted park and couldn’t stop kissing each other, feeling the taste of each other’s lips for an eternity. As Lindsay shivered in his arms, Bobby slid off his jacket and put it around her. “Maybe we should go. It’s getting really cold.” He whispered. “Come on, I’ll take you home.” He held her hand as they walked to his car and drove off. Bobby insisted on walking her up to the door and as they stood in front of her door, they couldn’t bring themselves to say goodbye. “Why did you walk me home?” Lindsay asked, not being able to wipe her loving smile out of her face as Bobby stroked her hair. “I wanted to.” He came even closer, desperately wanting to keep holding her. “Do you… want to…” She laughed and Bobby had that irresistible smile. “You know…” She continued. “Come in?” He completed her hesitant question and then leaned closer to whisper, “I’d love to.” before softly bringing his lips to kiss hers. “Ok.” She hissed and unlocked the door as she felt him close behind her. As they came in to her dark apartment she searched for the light switch. “Don’t.” She felt Bobby’s hand touch hers and turned to him. “I guess we’re skipping the coffee.” “I never said I wanted to come in for coffee.” She swallowed hard, her nervousness obviously showing. “Hey… if you don’t want to do this, we won’t.” He lifted her face to him with his finger. “No. I do… I really do…” Bobby felt her hand reaching for his shirt in the dark. He leaned over to kiss her neck whilst feeling his jacket being slid of his shoulders. He raised his look to hers and even in the dark, he could see her eyes shining to him. She loosened his tie and stripped it off “Has anyone ever told you you’re excessively over dressed?” She whispered with a smile as she slid off her jacket and reached to unbutton his shirt. Bobby held her in his hands and carried her to her bedroom. As they entered inside, Lindsay pulled Bobby’s lapels in the direction of the bed and stripped off her blouse. Bobby just had to run his fingers over her bared skin and when he did, he found himself being overcome with desire for her. They both kicked off their shoes and lied on the bed. Bobby on top of Lindsay as she pushed open his shirt and helped him to take it off. Their kisses were lustful and deep, allowing them to feel each other’s desire. As Lindsay opened his belt, Bobby immediately went to unzip his pants and shed them completely his body. His fingers fumbled to her warm back and unhooked her braw. “Lindsay…” He whispered, as his senses were too hazy for him to speak out loud. “Uh uh?” she helped him to remove her skirt as well. “I don’t have anything that will… you know… protect us.” She smiled, weak with desire. “First drawer… just reach for it.” Bobby’s left hand pushed open the drawer to grab their protection. “I can’t believe this… Bobby…” She moaned as he lowered his kisses and fulfilled her every wish. An hour later Lindsay lied on her side, spooned up in Bobby’s protective body. His one hand resting on her stomach, wrapped around her waist and the other beneath her head as she kissed the palm of his hand and cuddled even closer. Listening intently to his constant breath she whispered quietly, “I love you Bobby.” Secure in the knowledge he didn’t hear her admission. She slowly closed her eyes as Bobby opened his and stroked her hair. “I love you too Lindsay.” Together at last.
