TOXIC WASTE:

It’S YUcKy!

So . . . What is toxic waste?
Toxic waste is the hideous byproduct of nuclear energy, like a used up lightbulb or a dead battery. It's terrible for the environment, can take thousands of years to biodegrade, and is deadly to humans! When it comes to toxic (nuclear) waste, think more along the lines of Robocop rather than The Toxic Avenger (both are good movies though!)

What's the history behind this?
Nuclear energy has been in use by humans since 1951. That's nearly 70 years' worth of nuclear waste! That's nearly 100 years' worth of nuclear waste!
What's so cool about nuclear energy?
Nuclear energy is great! Even just one tiny pellet the size of a lego head can produce the same amount of energy as a trainload full of coal! Holy cow!!1!
Who are the major "players" involved in this issue?
France makes a whole lot of nuclear waste. Today, 75% of France's energy is nuclear!
The United States, France, Russia, South Korea, and Germany produce the most nuclear waste. Thanks, President Clinton!

What are the risks involved? How does nuclear waste impact the environment (where we live) now, and in the future?
Nuclear waste is extremely deadly. Not only does America produce 2,000 tons of nuclear waste every year, but exposure to certain kinds can cause instant death, and you don't even get any cool Hulk powers! What the h*ck!! Nuclear waste negatively impacts the environment, too. On lake Michigan, many animals, like frogs, can be seen with many legs! In Springfield, there even exist three eyed fish! ZOINKS!!

Why is this such a big deal?
Plutonium-239, a very strong material that makes a lot of energy, produces waste that has a half life of 24,000 years!!
