Villains

The Verve Pipe  reviewed by Mike Alvarado

Last year My friends and I were driving down the road one day when I heard a song that had caught my ear like never before I only knew the song title "Cup of Tea" not the band. I went to a music store to find out about this band,They told they were called the Verve Pipe. I later got the Album " Villains" for christmas, To say that this record blew me away was a understatement! From the opening track "Barely" To the ending track "Veneer". The poetic lyrics of Brian Vander Ark Combined with the guitar technique of A J Dunning really make this album unique, One of my favorite tracks on the album and one of the most underrated is "Ominous Man" with it's hypnotizing beginning and it's somber tale of a man driven over the edge in love with a woman that he begins to stalk her.. I really loved this song, although I wonder what inspired Vander Ark to write a song like that? the climatic ending topped it off very well. "Cup of Tea" is a another good track, The guitars on this track start out very grinding then later become quite mesmerizing. On "Drive you Mild" the lyrics arn't as memorable but it still has a good rocking melody. "Reverend girl" is a very beautiful song when I listened to "Reverend Girl" i felt I was In a forest In Michigan.. The home state of "Verve Pipe". "Myself" with it's tale of a selfish woman is another underrated song i like. "Photograph" had a good rhythm to dance to. All in all this was one of the best albums i have heard..Although this Album Isn't for everyone,At times the lyrics tended to fall short of their true meanings. In other songs the the lyrics tended to be a bit too repetitive.."Freshmen" and "Penny Is Poison" and the title trac "Villains" are are examples of this. "Cattle" sounded too depressing.. "Real" was good but too short. I would give this album on a scale of one to ten a eight, I felt it could have been a better album. However if you are a fan of the "Verve Pipe" you won't be disappointed.
