GATEWOOD'S PEP TALK AIDS COLLEGIATE
Sometimes, motivation is a matter of a heart-to-heart talk.
After the first 10-minute period of extra time needed to break a scoreless tie between Louisville Collegiate (Ky.) and Louisville Sacred Heart (Ky.) in the finals of the 2001 Apple Tournament, Collegiate captain Catherine Gatewood had a talk with teammate Eleanor Martin.
"Take the shot quicker," said Gatewood, noticing that Martin's slow trigger off short corners -- in which only three field players could defend the goal along with the keeper -- was resulting in poor or no scoring chances.
"I can't," Martin said, trying to get more oxygen in her lungs during the changeover before the 10-minute golden-goal period.
"Yes, you can," Gatewood said.
And with that, it took just two minutes for Martin to score the game-winner in a 1-0 win over the Valkyries. It was Collegiate's third win in four years in this Louisville-area kick-off tournament.
