Ways That Pay:
5 Ways to Sell your Work!
Instead of only thinking of selling your art in a gallery or a traditional show, here's a few proven "ways that pay" for the emerging artist. We've tried them and found that they worked, so we'll pass them on to you:
1. Take Orders- If you are planning to reproduce one of your favorite originals, pre-selling is a great way to begin. Just like when you did a fundraiser in school with the photo of the product and signed your customers up, you can pre-sell your art.
2. T-Shirts- The best way to see how the public appreciates your art is when they're willing to wear it on their back! T-shirts are fun to create and now easier than ever with digital production. You can use a home computer or a company such as Kinko's to scan your originals and turn them into wearable art. We'll share with you couple of proven methods of selling them after you've created them next.
3. Find a gift shop, coffee shop or even a nice local restaurant that fits the type art that you create and leave your work there for sale to their customers. Many of these businesses are suitable for having your art displayed prominently, and either prints or originals can be sold. Gift shops and coffee houses work very well with small framed or matted originals and prints, and many of their customers like the one-of-a-kind original greeting cards that you could create.
4. Prints- Since digital production has hit the scene, it's easier to reproduce your originals for selling. A few years ago, artists would have to raise enough cash to print hundreds or even thousands of copies of one illustration and hope to make the money back in sales. This had always been a challenge for the new or emerging artist. Today's digital publishing allows you to print only what you need to sell and make a profit as you go. Ask a local art gallery or art instructor to refer you to printers who specialize in reproducing art work to compare their rates.
5. Give a Demo- This method is really an attention grabber! By setting up at a mall, bookstore or any good place already generating traffic, you'll turn the heads of passers-by. Those same curious patrons not only will stop and talk, but many will buy the art, greating cards, posters,t-shirts or any other of the products that you've made available at a near by display table.
