I need
to rant about what the WB did to the show. And Mixx did in their translation
(but for once, Mixx didn't do a crappy-ass translation. I'm in shock.
And happy because Mixx is getting much better). If you're spolier sensative,
stop reading this right now. If not, please keep reading.
The
WB, in trying to turn a shoujo--girl's--anime into a boy's anime,
decided to start the show about, oh, eight episodes into the series,
when the male character, Li Syaoran (random aside, that has to be the
ugliest romanization of that name. Bleh), was introduced. Never mind the
show is about Sakura. But it's like the WB thinks boys won't watch unless
Li is there. (Never you mind that boys will watch shoujo with no
problems--my nine- and six-year-old little brothers *love* Sailor Moon
(and you don't get more mahou-shoujo [magical-girl, which is the
same genre as CCS] than *that*) and the nine-year-old reads Magic Knight
Rayearth (also mahou-shoujo and by the same group--CLAMP--as
did CCS) and liked it so much he watched the whole first season in one
sitting, in Japanese, reading the subtitles. Which is frickin' impressive,
since the boy usually would rather have teeth pulled than read. And he
liked the manga so much that he hugged me, hugged the books, then jumped
for joy when I gave him the first four books for Christmas
And
while on the subject of Li Syaoran...the WB completely edited out his
crush on Yukito (aka "Julian." Now erase the name from your little heads,
because I will not be using it again). Yes. The little boy has a crush
on another boy. And it's sooooo cute, too. Wai wai kawaii!
And they edited it out. And I know they're also going to edit out Touya
(aka "Tory"...did the people doing the renaming realize that "tori" means
"bird" in Japanese? I guess not. And given the fate of another CLAMP character
named "Tori" [Kotori from X--her name means "small bird"], and
given what Touya gives up later in the series and why [and I'm sure they'll
be butchering the "why"], it was just a bad-ouchie name to chose. Oh,
well--at least it's not as pulled-out-of-the-ass as Tomoyo becoming Madison
or Yukito becoming Julian [Why?!!?]) and his...hmm, how
to put it tactfully..."relationship" with Yukito. (To quote
my friend 'Iffer when she watched an ep that had Yukito sleeping over
at the Kinomotos: "Ummm...yeah, SURE they're studying for their college
entrance exams. ^_^") That's right, boys-n-girls. Touya and Yukito are
"'um' friends" --and if any of you have your little innards
just a-churnin' at the thought of two boys being in love with each other,
do me a favor and don't ever read any manga or watch anime, all right?
'Cause it's because of folks like you that the shounen-ai (boy-love),
shoujo-ai (girl-love), and occasional incest gets edited out...so
boys get turned into girls, lesbians get turned into cousins, and the
love that's a wee bit too close for kin get turned into commercial time
(all *three* of which happened to Sailor Moon.)
Unlike
almost all the other CLAMP shounen-ai couples--which are usually
either pretty scary, pretty dysfunctional, pretty "Holy sexual predator,
Batman!," or pretty much a mix of all three (ie Subaru/Seishirou [Tokyo
Babylon, X], Yue/Clow Reed [Cardcaptor Sakura], or
Kamui/Fuuma [X])--Yukito and Touya are so sweet and pure and innocent!!
And it's so *cute* that Touya calls Yukito "Yuki"...which leads me to
my Mixx rant.
Mixx
decided, for no good reason, to change Yukito's name to "Yuki." That wouldn't
bother me (seeing how if that was all it would actually be pretty *good*
by Mixx standards--"Rini," anyone? And "Oruha" becoming "Ora"? [Clover]),
except that it instantly takes away the first marker that Touya and Yukito
care about each other in a way that's beyond friendship. In the original
Japanese, the only person to call Yukito "Yuki" is Touya. When I watched
the anime in Japanese, as soon as Touya said "Yuki" instead of "Yukito,"
I knew that Touya loved Yukito in a über-kawaii shounen-ai (yes,
I just mixed German and Japanese. Deal) kinda way. And Mixx made that
go away (even though they didn't edit out the other hints of shounen-ai
or shoujo-ai, so you go, Mixx--they even translated in such a way
that it was more obvious in some ways. I was impressed.
Oh,
and while on the subject of names...WB..."Eli Moon"?!!? *eyetwitch*.
When I heard that, I swear to God, my first thought was, "What kinda
hillbilly-ass name is that?"
And
then I heard "Julian Star."
Where's
a Clue card when you need it?
