| Russian Mosin Nagant, Model 1891/30 | |||||||
| The Russian Mosin Nagant holds a special place in history. It was used in various forms for well over 60 years by the Russians, and has helped win many victories for the Rodina, or Motherland. It is truly the work horse of the Soviet Union. Originally developed in the late 1800's, it was among the first cartridge rifles in history. The fact that the basic design of the action remained unchanged until the 1950's is a testament to its success. In the 1920's, Russia was looking for a way to modernize their original 1891 design, and decided to base this modernization on the dragoon rifles. They began production on some trial rifles in 1927, and finalized the design in 1930, at which point they began full-scale production. The models produced between 1927 and 1932 are known as "Type 1" because they still carried some features from the 1891 model. The "Type 2" was produced from 1933 to 1944. This rifle is a 1943-dated example of the Type 2 "vintovka obrazets 1891/30 goda" (rifle model 1891/30). It is typical of wartime production rifles. With the bayonet installed, it is taller than I am! It came complete with bayonet, original "dog collar" sling, ammo pouch, cleaning kit, and oiler bottle. All numbered parts match, and it is in excellent (arsenal like-new) condition, with only minor storage/handling dings on the stock. |
