Maketest, Taketest, Tutor, and GradeIt installation and use.

The purpose of the programs:

Maketest:
Maketest is designed to create tests that can be changed such
that different tests can be created whenever desired. This is particularly
useful for teachers who need to make makeup tests, different versions
of the same test, or different tests from year to year. The test
template is fashioned by the teacher. Tests that are produced can be
printed and given in a traditional manner, given online by using the
accompanying program "Taketest", or developed into a tutorial and used
by students by using the program "Tutor". Tests taken with the program
"Taketest" can be graded by using the program "GradeIt".

Maketest can import questions from tests previously made on
another word processor.

Taketest:
Taketest will ask questions created with Maketest in a
scrambled order. In addition, if the test contains text or numerical
variables, different questions will be asked each time the program is
used. The program "GradeIt" will grade the test for the instructor
and list student and correct answers. The results can be printed or
saved to disk and viewed at a later time. The program is ideal for
makeup tests and distance learning.

Tutor:
Tutor will ask students questions in a scrambled order. In
addition, if the test contains text or numerical variables, different
questions will be asked each time the program is used. Hints can be
requested and answers given. The program will grade the question and
give correct answers if desired. The program is ideal for learning new
and reviewing old material. The same tests can also we given using the
program "Taketest" and graded with the program "GradeIt".

GradeIt:
This program grades tests designed with Maketest and taken on
the computer with the program "Taketest". When tests are graded
results can be printed or save to disk and viewed at a later time.

See register.txt for information on how to obtained registered copies
of the programs.

Installing the programs your hard drive:

The program comes as a self extracting file called make40.exe.
Run this file and extract the files to the directory desired. Run the
program setup.exe from within the archive. Select the programs desired.
For student computers install taketest and tutor only. For instructor
computers install all programs and files. The selected files will be
placed on the hard drive and a Program Group and Icons will be created.

When you register (see register.txt) you will receive a
registered version of all four programs. The registration fee includes
a site license for all. Test questions can be imported with maketest
from files created on another word processor by saving the file as a
text file and then using maketest. In addition questions can be pasted
to the clipboard and pasted.
Registration costs $25 + $3 shipping and handling if a disk is
sent by the mail. The program can also be sent via e-mail if your
e-mail program supports attachments or by FTP. There is no shipping
fee for copies obtained by e-mail or FTP. In addition the program can
be purchased from www.qwerks.com with a credit card.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Using the calculator to create numerical variable answers.
When using the calculator for creating the setup for a
numerical variable answer operate it in the same fashion as a graphing
calculator. For example, to find the common logarithm of a number
press the log key first followed by the number.

What is a paired variable?
A paired variable is a text variable that is paired with other
text variables. When new variable values are assigned paired variables
will appear together. For an example see question #2 of the file
text.tst.

What is a heading?
A heading comes at the beginning of a test and includes
information such as the name of the student, the date, etc... See
text.tst for an example.

What is an ending?
An ending comes at the end of a test and includes information
that may be used by the student such as formulas, constants, etc...
See number.tst for an example.

What is a variable answer?
An answer that changes when variables within a question are
changed by using New Values or New for All from the Variable Menu.
Variable answers can be text or numerical.

What is a non-variable answer?
An answer that will be the same even with variables present.

What is a variable numerical answer
An answer that depends on the number variables currently
displayed within a question. Use the Edit|Variable|Numerical menu
item of the Answer Menu to edit.

What is the answer window?
The answer window will appear in the lower right corner when

leads to another. Hints will not appear in the printed copy of a
test or if the test is taken using the program "Taketest".

What is a variable?
A variable is either a text or a numerical value that can be changed
within a test question by pressing F4 (New Value from the Variable

time this is done a unique set of values will result. This allows
for different questions to be created at the touch of a button.

What is a number variable?
A number variable is a numerical value within a question that can be
changed. When a number variable is edited or created a dialog box will
appear. Enter the lower and upper range of values. Indicate what the
random increment value will be and whether a value of exactly 1 should
