Save Our TISM gig, Cameron McCulloch, Beat, 8/10/03

[I seriously hope Beat never buys another review off this fuckwit ever again. This is the worst review I've read since the one about "My Pal, by Hoss". -Ms .45]

For over ten years T.I.S.M. (This Is Serious Mum) have been pushing their hybrid of rock/techno/novelty music on the unsuspecting public with great effect; indeed, their music and attitude comes across like a New York City mugger. T.I.S.M. are a slap in the face in the face of the music and media industry; verbal rapists in the nicest possible way.

The first thing you notice about T.I.S.M. is their energy. From woe to go they are bouncing off the walls, jumping into the crowd and each other. Tonight's aural extravaganza was to support "Save our T.I.S.M" and played out like a cheesy telethon. They certainly know how to put on one hell of a show, and if the music isn't to your liking you're sure to have a ball watching a bunch of grown men in masks acting like five year olds who drank too much red cordial.

T.I.S.M's style is so varied that every time you see them it is a completely different expereince. What the guys lack in musical talent they make up for with infectious songs such as Defecate On My Face and Saturday Night Palsy, which, when combined with an almost acid-like state of live performance, gives the punters the kind of show you don't forget for a very long time.

The highlight was Ron 'Hitler' Barassi's spoken word section where everyone from Nikki Webster to T.I.S.M. got a serve. It's good to see that through the masks T.I.S.M. don't take themselves, or anything else, seriously, with one member of the band even playing half the gig in nothing but his mask and undies. Support band The Fallouts were tolerable, with a decent sound, but it was nothing I haven't heard before. I guess the only real thing that was disappointing was the lack of an encore, but with the amount of energy in the hour and a half set it's completely forgivable. T.I.S.M. may not be to everyone's liking but they certainly are one of the most original and crazy bands around.
