| Is she going to be all right? Nickolas asked the doctor.
Shes going to be fine, Dr. Patricia Raines replied. What happened? It couldve been too much stress, dehydration, or anything. Im going with stress though. Nickolas nodded. Is the baby all right? To be honest, I dont know. It doesnt look good. Did she ever complain of complications before or anything? She was getting cramps earlier. The doctor nodded and wrote something in her clipboard. She had gotten them before she said and just said it was from her being hungry. She was still getting after she ate today though. The doctor nodded again and wrote more. Theyre both going to be all right, right doc? Im not going to say for certain, Mr. Carter. I want to keep her over night and run some more tests. Its just precaution, right? Of course. Good. I just want to find out the definite cause. May I see her? Of course. Go right in and Ill be back in a few minutes. Ok. Nickolas walked away and went into Valondra cubicle. He saw her lying on the bed and she looked. Hey, Valondra said as Nickolas walked over. Hey, Princess. He kissed her forehead. How do ya feel? Fine. Good. She smiled. Im sorry about earlier. Dont worry, Nicky. I didnt mean to upset you. Since its the first day of April I just did it as an April Fools joke. She grinned and shook her head. If I knew this was going to happen I wouldnt have done it. Dont blame yourself. Really Im to blame, because I for the cramps. Dont blame yourself either. She sighed. Im just glad my fiance and my child are fine. Are we. Of course. Dr. Raines said so. He kissed her. She just wants to keep ya overnight though so she can run some tests. She nodded. Youll stay with me though. Always. I aint leaving until you do. Ok. He pushed her hair from her face. I was just playing along with you. What? I knew it was April Fools and I knew you wouldnt do something like that to me. So I decided to throw a fit and get you back. He just looked at her. But this here isnt a joke. I got a bad cramp and didnt make it back downstairs. Or back inside. I shouldve come to the hospital when they started. You didnt know, Princess. Maybe so, but I still shouldve come. We couldve lost our baby. But we didntso Next time it happens Im coming here right away. And Ill be with you. She smiled and took his hand. Thank you. Its nothing. I do it because I love you. And I love you. She squeezed his hand. You ok? I just got She winced and squeezed his hand again. Im going to get Dr. Raines. She squeezed his hand a third time. These are even worse than before. Ill be right back. He went to walk out and Dr. Raines walked in. Good youre here. Whats the matter? Dr. Raines asked. Cramps, Valondra said. Very bad. Alright, Dr. Raines said. Calm down. Nick you need to step outside a moment. I aint going anywhere, Nickolas said. Please, Dr. Raines demanded. Fine, Nickolas said and walked from the room in protest. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Nickolas paced the waiting room for fifteen minutes as people watched him. Every nurse and doctor that walked out he stopped and looked; hoping they had news. When they kept going he went back to his pacing and waited impatiently. A moments passed, Nickolas stated. Dr. Raines will come soon, Trixie said. Somethings wrong. You dont know that, Strom said. Yes I do. I can feel it. Something is definitely wrong. Both Lon and baby are going to be fine, Lance tried to assure him. Im telling you something is wrong. Youre just over-reacting, Trixie said. Right, Trace? Uh, I aint saying anything, Trace said. Nick and Lon share a bond and he would know. Thank you, Nickolas said. Youre welcome, Trace said. Mr. Carter, a nurse interrupted and he looked. Could you come with me please? Yeah, Nickolas said following the nurse. They walked back to Valondras cubicle and he went in. Valondra and Dr. Raines looked and he walked over to his fiance. She took his hand and he sat beside her. Whats going on? Valondra wiped her eyes. Whats wrong? Im afraid Valondra had a miscarriage, Dr. Raines said. Nickolas didnt say anything and lowered his head. Im really sorry. What caused it? Stress. He nodded. Could you leave us alone? Of course, Dr. Raines said. Try and get some rest. Valondra nodded and Dr. Raines walked out. You can go ahead and blame me, Valondra said. It is my fault. No its not, Nickolas said. And I aint blaming you for anything. Youve just been so stressed lately with the wedding and school and the pregnancy and everything else. You cant predict these things. I was taking on too much, Nicky; and Dr. Atwell warned me about the whole stress thing. Quit blaming yourself, Princess. Valondra sighed and shook her head. Dr. Raines said I need to rest a couple days. So well cancel the wedding and have it in July like planned. Not if you dont want to. I want to. Your health is more important to me than some stupid wedding. Besides, getting married, because were having a baby, was a stupid idea. She nodded. We listened to everyone else and it put too much stress on you. I justI wishI dont know. Im just so confused. Its ok. Well get through this together. Yeah. People will understand about the wedding and everything. She didnt say anything. Were going to be fine and we can try again when were married. She nodded. This aint going to cause problems between us. In fact I think itll bring us closer and make us stronger. Ya think so? I know so. He kissed her and laid beside her. END PART 5 HOME |
