Jenai stood on the back porch at the cabin and watched the fireflies. Nickolas stood at the door and watched her with a smile, as he thought about the kiss they shared earlier. It wasnt mentioned since it happened and Nickolas had to wonder why she kissed him the way she did. He didnt mind that she kissed him; in fact he loved it. He watched as Jenai walked off the porch and Kendra stood beside him.
He kept his gaze on Jenai, as Kendra said, I was hoping we could go over the case.
I thought you were up to speed? Nickolas asked.
Well I have a few questions regarding the case, Kendra replied.
Can it wait until morning? Nickolas asked. Im beat and I have to go find Jenai. He went to walk away and Kendra stood in front of him. He just looked at her and she started to undo his tie.
Why dont you just let the guards watch her? Kendra suggested unbuttoning his shirt and he grabbed her wrists.
I know what you are and its not happening with me, Detective Morgan, Nickolas said. JJs my responsibility and thats the only thing Im concentrating on while were here. If you dont like it then you can get on the next flight back to L.A. He left her go and went to find Jenai. He followed the path she took, but didnt see her. JJ! He listened for her, but heard nothing. Jenai!
Boo! Jenai yelled jumping from the trees and Nickolas jumped.
Holy shit! She started laughing.
Ha-ha gotcha.
I thought I was going to have a heart attack.
Sorry. She smiled. I want to show you something. She took his hand and led him farther into the woods. I havent been here in years.
Do you think we should be out here this late? She looked at him.
I know my way so dont worry about a thing.
I dont know if I should trust you.
Why not?
Because I seen movies like this where sexy women take men into the woods, seduce them, and then kill them.
Would you have a problem if I seduced you out here? She gave him a seductive look and he grinned. I may be taking you into the woods, but Im not going to seduce you or kill youtonight anyway. She winked and they stopped walking. Aint it beautiful? Nickolas looked at the spring and its surroundings. I love it this time of night. I love how the moon shines through the trees and cascades the water.
This is too feminine for me. Im a man so is there any manly things around here?
Theres nothing wrong with getting in touch with your feminine side. He smiled. Aint it beautiful though? He looked at her.
Yeah; very beautiful. She looked at him and he continued smiling. She felt herself blush and hoped Nickolas didnt notice. So did you come up here often?
We came up here every summer and Kevin would bring me back here with his buddies.
I thought you were a family friend of Kristins?
You didnt figure it out yet?
What?
My last names Richardson and Kevins last name is Richardson; you figure it out, Detective. He looked at her a moment.
You two are related?
Siblings.
Oh boy. I feel like an idiot. I just thought it was a coincidence you had the same last names. She grinned. Im so stupid.
Dont feel stupid. I thought Kev told you.
Nope; he said you were a family friend of Kris.
Typical of Kevin. He chuckled. Well were not really related.
Oh.
His parents adopted me when I was eight after I was dropped on their their doorstep.
Really?
Yeah and I aint going to bore ya with the story.
Ok.
Did ya talk to Kevin?
Yeah.
Whatd he say about Detective Morgan?
Hes going to give her a week and if youre still at each others throats then shes going back.
Good; I dont want her here anyway.
Of course ya dont.
Does he know how long well be here?
Nope. She gave a little nod and sat on the ground. Nickolas sat beside her and they looked at each other. I was thinking.
About what?
Umthat kiss earlier in your room. She grinned and sighed.
What about it?
I guess I was just wondering why you kissed me.
Are you complaining?
Of course not.
Ok then. They sat in silence a few moments and stared at the water. Honestly, Detective, I kissed you because I had a lot on my mind and I needed something to occupy my mind so I wouldnt think about it and kissing you was the first thing that came to mind. If I gave you the wrong signal then Im sorry. I didnt mean too.
You didnt. As much as I enjoyed it and how nice it was you didnt give me the wrong signal.
Good. Im glad. I was afraid that I did.
Not at all. She nodded. Maybe we should get back.
Im not ready.
Arent you tired? I am.
Maybe a little, but I want to stay a little longer.
Ok, but only five more minutes.
If you insist.
I do.
They sat in silence again and continued staring at the water. Neither knew what to say or do although they had a million thoughts running through their heads. Nickolas didnt want to say the wrong thing to upset her and Jenai didnt want to say something that would give him the wrong signal. They cared about each other very much, but now wasnt the time to admit that. Nickolas had a job to do and their relationship had to stay professional. It couldnt be anything more and if she continues pushing him away it wont turn into anything more. She didnt want anything more anyway, because of her situation. It had to stay professional no matter how bad the sexual tension got between them and for the sake of Nickolas career.
Jenai looked at Nickolas, as he got up and looked at her. He held out his hand and said, Cmon. Time to go. She just continued looking at him a moment then put her hand in his. He helped her up and they looked at each other. Jenai saw the passion in Nickolas eyes, but she couldnt satisfy that passion for him. She wanted to, but it wasnt right. She didnt want him to lose his job because of her if the wrong person found out. Someone like Detective Kendra Morgan. She was at the cabin with them. She was at the cabin alone.
We have to go.
Yeah. She left him go and started walking back to the cabin, as Nickolas watched her.
