Another poem based during the chapter “The House of Healing.” During the time Merry has fallen into the Black Shadow after stabbing the Nazgul, Pippin watches him sleep.

Watching Him Sleep

Why does he lie so deathly still?
Never before have I seen him so ill.
His right arm is cold to the touch.
By the look on his face it pains him much.

His golden curls now lie wet against his fevered head,
Deep in sleep on the white sheeted bed.
Every so often he lets out a pain filled cry.
Though I can’t do much, help him I try.

He mumbles of his nightmares in his world of sleep.
The look on his face makes me want to weep.
Why must he suffer? Why is it so unfair?
All these nightmares he should never of had to bear!

While he sleeps I talk to him of our lives back home.
How around the Shire and Buckland we used to roam.
About the crops we stole and the trouble we caused,
I pour out these memories without a pause.

When I watch how deep in sleep he lies
I fear, deep down, that he may die.
Merry if you leave this world I will never be whole.
If you leave me Merry I will lose half my soul.
