A History of Doubt

This is an interview between radio broadcaster Krista Tippett, and historian Jennifer Michael Hecht. She begins with giving some examples of the doubt of ancient Greeks; cynics, skeptics, and Epicureans. She then talks about doubt in religion. In Christianity she talks about the book of Job as an example of doubt. She also uses the example of Jesus on the cross saying My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? She explains how eventually, after Christianity takes over in Europe, many doubters are persecuted and move east where Islam is founded. She says that in 20th century America was a good place to be a doubter up until the Cold War, when people began to associate atheism with communism. Now, Hecht says, with our enemies being radical religious terrorists, people are beginning to change their mind.
