The Anthropic Principle

The Anthropic principle is a way of thinking about the universe and its existence. The term Anthropic Principle was created by Brandon Carter in 1973. Carter is a theoretical physicist who is probably best known for his work on black holes. There are multiple forms of the Anthropic Principle, the most well known are the “strong” and “weak” Anthropic Principles. The weak principle basically states that we have been placed at our point in the universe so that life could be supported. The strong Anthropic Principle states that the universe had to be created to support life.

This relates to the existence of God in many ways. If you ask any reasonable scientist “assuming the ‘big bang’ theory is true, what are the chances of the human race existing?,” he will tell you that the chances are very slim. The Anthropic principle agrees with this, and takes it a step further. It says that, since the chances of humanity existing are so small, the universe must be “fine tuned”. The universe we live in is so complicated, that it could not have just happened by chance, it had to be planed. This brings God into the picture. Though the Anthropic Principle does not support any single religion it does support the existence of some creator.

I personally agree with the Anthropic Principle, not as a basis for all of my thinking, but as an argument against Atheism. I beilive that the world we live in is way to complicated for it to have happened by chance. If you look around yourself at the world around you, do you really think that all of the complex things, the human brain,  emotions, religions, the earth, could have happened just by coincidence? I, myself, do not.
