Mindspring was established in January 2002 by a group of Muslim intellectuals who saw the need to open a channel of communication between the Western world and Islamic world.

The internet was seen as the means to begin that discussion, which would serve as a basis from which to organise further events in the western world, due to the obvious limitations of the web in facilitating dialogue," said the organisers of Mindspring.
