Do anyone have any suggestions for a GOOD but not TOO expensive Mountain bike?

WHAT IS UP WITH THESE DEPARTMENT STORE BIKES NOWDAYS???

This is the First and LAST time I buy a bike from TARGET. The Bike I had brought was a Orange and sliver Triax 21 speed bike Which cost me about $170 dollars (tax inculded). Since it was a little bit more expensive I thought I was getting a good deal. The thing that caught my eye with the bike was the front disk brake and the supension.

The Bike was excellent. The only problem was that the shocks squeaked a lot when going over large bumps but otherwise it was good. Then here comes 5 months later. The incident with the concete re-bar and my rear wheel. When I took my bike to the bike shop not only was the derailer and the rear wheel needed to be replaced but my chain was streached, the rear brakes needed to be replaced, cables were frayed, and my front wheel needed to be straightened.  I was thinking "Well Damn!! I only had the bike for five months!!! I didn't even put 100 miles on it yet!" Then I started thinking about my current riding history.

Even though I didn't ride my bike as often as I usually do,  about once in a whileor so I do spend time riding at the Blue Mountain bike trail in Peekskill N.Y. and those trails are not a smooth ride down the paved road either. There are bumps...stumps, branches, mulch paths...and mud. And there are about 20 miles of trail.  I've been up there I think 5 or 6 times for about 4 hours each time and I still haven't been on all those trails. I may have put on a year's worth(or 2) of wear and tear on that bike in those five months. So it was only a matter of time.

So instead of spending all that money to fix such a cheap @$$ Bike, I trashed it. But I kept the front brakes because it's the only thing on the bike that was not defective and I might but able to transfer the brakes to another bike if it has the holes on the fork for the front brakes.

I'm willing to pay up to $250 for my next bike. I which I could afford a really good bike like those $400 ones but I can't. So I'm going to look around for a while until I find a decent bike.

"They say you get what you pay for but that was really cheap..."
