The Catholicate, which is the Holy See of the East, is the
See of St. Thomas, the Apostle; the Catholicos is the legitimate successor of
St. Thomas. The Catholicate of the East was established at the Jerusalem Synod
in 231 A.D. The headquarters of the Church was first in Edessa in Persia. This
was moved to Selucia, then to Tigris and Musal. It was transferred and restored
in Malankara, India in 1912. The present headquarters is at Devalokam, Kottayam,
Kerala, India. The Malankara Orthodox Church is recognized by all Christian
churches and denominations, as an independent, indigenous and autocephalous
Church. The Malankara Orthodox Church is
present all over the world. His Holiness Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews II
is the current head of the Indian Malankara Orthodox Church and he is the 89th
successor of St. Thomas on his Apostolic Throne.
