PATENT IRON TRUSS BRACED PIANOFORTE,

WHICH IS SO SUITABLE FOR SHIPPING.

The great improvement in these Pianofortes consists in the construction of the Sounding-board, which, in place of
being, as in the ordinary mode of construction, tightly glued to the wooden framing of the instrument, is in this patented
method suspended by metallic clamps, springs, or screws, so as to admit of being wholly or partially tightened. Instead of
the tone being partially absorbed and deadened by the attachment on ordinary sounding-boards to the framing, a defect
inseparable from the old construction, the Patent Sounding-board, by its isolation, and by the arrangement of the springs
or clamps, retains a much greater and longer vibration, and the tone is not dissipated, but flows on clearly and distinctly,
giving to the ordinary Pianoforte much of the clearness and effect of the flageolet and diapason stops of the Organ. It is
important to observe, that the usual arrangement of the Piano is in every other respect followed. There is no change in
the method of playing, no difference is observed in fingering, and the pedal movements are identical with the ordinary
instrument.
Fig. 1 shows a Semi-cottage Pianoforte with the left-hand side open, which presents a perfect view of the sus-
pension principle. Fig. 2 is a drawing of a Grand Pianoforte upon the same principle, though not shown in this as in Fig. 1.

Collard Moutrie, William Frederick , , 4, King Street, Holborn
( patent , 1856 )
Collard, Frederick William , , Tottenham Court Road
( patent , 1821 )

COLLARD, FREDERICK WILLIAM (1772-1860), pianoforte manufacturer, son of William and Thamosin Collard, was baptised at Wivelscombe, Somersetshire, on 21 June 1772, and coming to London at the age of fourteen, obtained a situation in the house of Longman, Lukey, & Broderip, music publishers and pianoforte makers at 26 Cheapside. IN 1799 Longman & Co. fell into commercial difficulties, and a new company, consisting of John Longman, Muzio Clementi, Frederick Augustus Hyde, F. W. Collard, Josiah Banger, and David Davis, took over the business, but on 28 June 1800 Longman and Hyde retired, and the firm henceforth was known as Muzio Clementi & Co. After some time William Frederick Collard was admitted a partner, and on 24 June 1817 Banger went out. On 24 June 1831 the partnership between F. . Collard, W. F. Collard, and Clementi expired, and the two brothers continued the business until 24 June 1842, when W. F. Collard retired, and F. W. Collard, then sole proprietor, took into partnership his two nephews, Frederick William Collard, jun., and Charles Lukey Collard. After 1832 the pianos which had long borne the name of Clementi began to be called Collard & Collard, and many patents were in course of time taken out for improvements both in the action and the frame of the instruments. The firm soon gave up the business of music publishing, and confined themselves to pianoforte making, except that they had also the contract for supplying bugles, fifes, and drims to the regiments of the East India Company until 1858, when the government of India was transferred to the queen. About this time a novelty was brought out, which was suggested by an article in 'Chambers's Journal,' a piano of the cottage class styled pianoforte for the people, which was sold in considerable numbers. To the Great Exhibition of 1851 Collard sent a grand, for which the musical jury awarded the council medal, but this award was not confirmed, owing to some feeling of jealousy.
The firm suffered twice from large fires ; on 20 March 1807 the manufactory in Tottenham Court Road was burnt to the ground, and on 10 Dec. 1851 a new manufactory in Oval Road, Camden Town, was entirely destroyed. F. W. Collard died at 26 Cheapside on 31 Jan. 1860, aged 88, having always lived in the same house since his arrival in London in 1786. WILLIAM FREDERICK COLLARD, the brother and partner of the above, was baptised at Wivelsicombe on 25 Aug. 1776, and, in addition to an inventive genius respecting improvements in pianos, also developed a taste for lyric poetry. He retired from business in 1842, and died at Folkestone on 11 Oct. 1866.

Directions

for Regulating the Patent Double Action Piano Forte.
If the hammer by use gets unequal & ceases to answer the finger
with that accuracy required, take out the fore-board & turn the brass
screw which projects from the Lever fixed in the Key inwards particularly
observing that when the Key is softly pressed down the ham. rises no higher
than with an 8th of an Inch of the String, otherwise when the Key
is struck it will remain fixed against the wires & destroy that tone it is
calculated to produce. If on the other hand the hammer itself is impel'd
to remain againt the string after it has performed its office the contrary will
effect the necessary alteration. To take out a key press it down in front
and ease the Lever from the under hammer by removing it forward with
the fore finger then lift the Key up beyond the center pin & it will come
out with ease. If a key should stick on its center or in front it may be
necessary to take it out observing the above directions & with a pen knife
to scrape the corrosive matter occasion'd by the friction of the pins which
guide it withing the mortise, the key will then play with ease.

SMART, Mr. Henry, of typhus fever, at Dublin, (whither he had gone to superinted the debût of his pupil Miss Goward) Nov. 27. Mr Smart began his musical education under Mr. Cramer, and played in the early part of his life in the orchestras of the Opera, Haymarket Theatre, and at the Ancient Concert. At the opening of the English Opera House, he was engaged as leader, and continued for several years. When the present Drury-lane Theatre opened, Mr. Smart was also retained as its leader ; and, we believe, it was his peculiar pride to have formed that orchestra entirely of English artists ; and in such estimation did they hold his character, that on his retirement from the Theatre in 1821, the orchestra presented him with a silver cup, as a march of their gratitude and his merit. Mr. Smart was leader at the oratorios, at which he had assisted since they were under the conduct of his brother, Sir George Smart, which began in 1813. In 1820, Mr. Smart entered into a manufactory for pianofortes, and, but for a very short period since, had obtained a patent for an important improvement in the touch of these instruments. He was distinguished by great urbanity of manners. In his nature he was kind, generous, and humane. He always evinced an ardent love of his art, and, on all occasions, private feeling gave way to public interests in its excercise.
