Hello I'm Barak Otter, the president of the United States of the River.
I am here to tell the citizens of the USR not to eat any freshwater
mussels. These mussels are on the endangered species list, like our relatives,
the sea otters. All citizens who do not follow this law will be arrested for
poaching. We have gathered information on these animals and have created
a report on them, our researchers have decided we have been eating to much
of these animals. These fresh water mussels belong to the mollusk order
Unionoida, which are freshwater mollusk. The shells are generally covered by
a thick skin. The shells look shiny because of a lining inside. There are a line
of "teeth" on the inside of the shells by the joint. Mussels live burrowed
under sand or gravel at the bottom of lakes and streams. Mussels are eaten
by many animals including otters, muskrats, and birds.
Mussels eat tiny pieces of dead leaves called detritus, and small organisms like
algae. Fresh water mussels are some of the few animals that improve our
water!
Our research team have decided the main cause of the depleating of these animals
is pesticides washed into our lake, and us eating to many of them. But this is
not just some wild guess, they know, they have evidence. Local newspapers talk
of a flood, and maps show farms close to the river. Some otters have gone missing
over the years, a sign that the mussels have been poisoned. After that, our
reasearchers decided that that many river creatures, like otters and certain types
of birds.
