
This is an Orange Filefish
The Filefish can grow to lengths of 24 inches long. They are found in waters from Nova Scotia south to Brazil, including Bermudia, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. In shallow waters to 25 fathoms. (or 150 feet) This is one of the largest filefishes. These feed on a virety of plants and sea grasses. Juvenials may be found on the surface in rafts of sargassum. There are 3 dorsal fins on this fish and the first can be locked into an upright position by the second. The large keel like pelvic bone in the filefish has been used to make unusual letter openers.
