Web How-To
or, "Say that again--slower"

Basics

The Internet
The Internet allows world-wide access to your files, notes, pictures, and any electronically stored information. You can update these files anytime from practically anywhere.
Store student work: photos.yahoo.com
Store your own files, etc: briefcase.yahoo.com, xdrive.com
Make Internet tests, quizzes, and activities: school.discovery.com
Make a web page: freewebspace.com
The Internet allows you to store lesson files and plans for easy display.
The Internet gives you control and organization.
The Internet provides a safe place to store valuable data.
The Internet allows you to share documents/photos, or keep them private.

The Process
Where to store your files.
Since you want files to be accessible on the Internet, you must find someone who is willing to keep your files for you. Your files must be located on a computer that is setup for other computers to access them. One example is the SVUSD computer (mail.silvervalley.k12.ca.us). As an employee of the Disctrict, you have space allotted to you on this server (computer). Simply log on (with your ID and email password) and click on "Web Page". The page that comes up allows you to select a file ("Browse"), and upload it. Your web address would be: mail.silvervalley.k12.ca.us/~bjones (bjones is the user ID).
You may also use other free "hosts" for your web site. They provide free space in exchange for ads on your page. Try freewebspace.com to search for different hosts.
You can also pay for this service. This gives you more features, room, and flexibility, with no ads. Try cnet.com for suggestions.
Important factors in deciding about where to put your web page:
Ease of uploads. (More that one file at a time? Allows the use of FrontPage directly? Can you use an FTP program--easier and faster downloads?)
Easy name. Is "mail.silvervalley.k12.ca.us/~joeteacher" too long a name? Some host are easier to remember than others.
Other features. Some sites provide email or other services for those who use your site.
Making your files. The easiest program available to us at SVHS is Microsoft FrontPage. You can create web page following the same basic steps as you would in Microsoft Word: Insert files/clipart, change the size/color of fonts, align text, use tables to arrange information, etc.
Simply start FrontPage (Start button>Programs>Microsoft FrontPage).
Start a new file.
Add your information. (More complicated FrontPage files will make the upload process more complicated, so be careful.)
Save your file with the name "default.html".
Upload your file to the Internet. (How depends on your host.)
Upload any pictures that you have used for your page.
Uploading Files. You will need to put your files "on" the Internet. Follow the basic guidelines below for how you are going to do this.
mail.silvervalley.k12.ca.us: If you are going to put your page on the District computer, you will need to log in at the SVUSD mail site. After you have logged in, click on "Web Site" at the top of the screen. You will see a window where your files are displayed, as well as buttons that look like this:

Click on the "Browse" button, and you can select the file you would like to upload. (You may want to make sure you understand to where you are saving your file in the first place.) Once you have selected your file, click "Upload File".  Your file will be uploaded. NOTE: Your main file, if on the SVUSD site, must have the name of "default.html" (without the quotes).
Other locations. If you have Geocities, Digitalrice, or others, you will need to go to their main page, log in, and follow their instructions.
FTP. If you are going to FTP your files, you may want to try this web page for instructions.
