This Week: Poltergeists

What are poltergeists?

The term poltergeist is German for noisy spirit. These ghosts are responsible for physical disturbances, such as loud noises and objects being moved or destroyed. Unlike other spirits who haunt cetain locations, poltergeists will often focus all their energy into one person. They are not typical spirits because their strenght is a psychic manifestation of stress, anxiety, and other powerful emotions they had in life.

Signs of a Poltergeist

Signs of a poltergeist are easy to spot. Unexplained noises, such as banging or scratching on doors/ walls/ windows are the most common. Electrical disturbances are very typical. Objects moving or disappearing/reappearing is usually a positive identification for poltergeists, as other spirits lack this ability. Many accounts state that the sound of marbles is a positive identification, although it is unknown why they have such a corrospondence in this way. Strange, unexplained smells is another common report. Some poltergeist can levitate objects, although this is uncommon and may indicate the prescence of a demon rather than a spirit.

Subtypes of Poltergeists

Though poltergeists all share many characteristics, certain variations exist. It is important to identify which type of poltergeist you are interacting with in order to understand how to manage a haunting.

Common Poltergeist

A basic poltergeist is relativley weak and perfers to work while no one is present. These entities are very mischevious and enjoy toying with whoever they haunt. A common poltergeist is obnoxious but, also, harmless. They cannot throw or break objects and they cannot manifest themselves. Typically, they will turn household objects like lights and faucets on/ off. The best way to deal with a common poltergeist is to simply ignore it. These spirits enjoy being a nuisance and will find another victim once bored.

Entrapped Poltergeists

These entities are more powerful than basic poltergeists. Caution is advised. All entrapped poltergeists share certain traits. These spirits were once evil humans who commited great sins during their life.  They remain in this world because, when they were alive, they had fixations that they could not cease obsessing over. These obsessions carry on after death. Their strength varies depending on the magnitude of their fixation. Many of these spirits are wrathful (but not vengeful- this is not a poltergeist). They derive their strength from the physical manifestation of this powerful emotion. Many will choose a particular human to harrass, though some are known to haunt multiple people at a time.

While disemboddied, these spirits have the same powers as basic poltergeists. Therefore, these entities will bind to a material object in order to gain more influence within the physical realm. Once they possess an item they become significantly more powerful, so beware. Unlike demons, however, they cannot possess humans and lack the ability to leave the cursed object at will. Some believe that leaving an item harms the spirit, which is why they reside within for long periods of time. Some common choices for these beings include paintings, vases, statues, dolls, jewlery, mirrors and candles.

This type of entity is physically harmless, but can psychologically traumatize its victims if it is strong enough. They can influence the emotions of the haunted. They may cause nightmares, headaches, and nausea-- nightmares are the most common. In some extreme cases, poltergeists have been known to cause delusions, making their victims hallucinate. This is not a possession, however. For example: if a person is drawn to the possessed item they are experiencing a delusion. If a person is activley controlled by the spirit, they themselves are under the influence of a demon. Though uncommon, some can manifest themselves into full-body apparitions to terrorize humans.

Violent Poltergeists

This category is the most dangerous of all. Unlike entrapped poltergeists, they can gather strength without binding to an object. They are usually bound to a location, although they can bind to a person as well. They tend to only haunt one person. They are not capable of inflicting harm directly upon their victims, but they are still threatening. They can forcefully throw objects, break household items, and start fires. This class of poltergeists are the most likely to levitate objects, since they are the most powerful. A cleansing is advised in order to banish the spirit.

It is unclear why some poltergeists have this ability while others lack it. Some hypothesize that these spirits are not of human origin but rather they are lesser demons. They are capable of manifesting themselves, but this is rare.

Other Information

It is common for people to confuse poltergeists with demons. For this reason, NEVER ATTEMPT TO SUMMON THE ENTITY. SUMMONING ALLOWS THE DEMON TO ENTER YOUR HOME. It is alright to communicate with the spirit (the being may even attempt to communicate with you, first), but do not do anything that can bring an unwanted prescence. If you are harmed physically in anyway, EXCORSIZE THE BEING IMMEDIETLY. IT IS NOT A POLTERGEIST!!! Despite being a nusance, most poltergeists are harmless and nothing to fear. If you feel endangered in any way, purge your home for your own well-being.
