"Privilege" - Synopsis by Zak Written By: David E. Kelley Season 7 episode one starts with the end of last year, the shooting. Flash to sentencing after the guilty verdict and Eugene is in Court telling the Judge the conviction should be commuted voluntary manslaughter giving the usual Eugene passion. Old DA man tells Judge he has no right to do so, according to law while Eugene asserts the Judge MUST do this. Judge says he'll reserve judgment. (until after a commercial) While the firm is having a meeting about the Lindsay scene in the board room, Lucy announced someone has just walked in wanting a Lawyer. Jimmy is voted to leave the meeting and deal with it. A very well dressed woman with a 16 yr old daughter asks if she can speak with him alone. Daughter stays in waiting room. Woman tells Jimmy that she has read how 2 lives were shattered 16 yrs ago when a baby was kidnapped. She is sincere in showing her guilt as she kidnapped the child. T 2 lives effected were the mother of the kidnapped girl and another woman who was charged but never convicted and whose name has been mud since. Woman says she wants to make some amends but in no way must anyone know who did this. She gives Jimmy 2 big bank drafts to give to each of the other women. She adds that the girl is healthy, has no recollection of anything and knows her present family as her biological family. Jimmy meets the bio Mum and the woman is left in shock, holding the bank draft with Jimmy saying he can not reveal the source. Firm decides to hire a new girl. Ms. "Bubbly" is interviewed by Eleanor. Bubbly says that she loves the firm and followed the Lindsay case day to day. Eleanor asks how she thought the firm did. The woman says can I be honest? El says of course and the woman basically says Eleanor blew it. Battered woman syndrome in the case was stupid and she gives a great alternate defense. El is left angry, but acknowledging 1) this woman is smart and 2) she likely blew Lindsay's defense. Everyone ends up liking the woman except Eleanor (of course ) who calls her a slut which was pretty funny. Woman is hired. Judge comes back with decision on L. Says he has no choice on this ruling and that he finds it insulting that Eugene now argues self-defence after the battered woman syndrome argument in Court during trial. He sentenced he r to...."prison for the rest of your natural life. Everyone seems shocked, but I'm not sure why as she WAS convicted of 1st degree murder. Lindsay is taken away shackled in front of a stunned Bobby (You know that face) Helen comes to office telling Jimmy he's got to testify against his client (say who the kidnapper is) as the mother of the kid has gone to police. Eugene of course says no way. Later Eugene and Jimmy tell the kidnapper what's up but that they won't give her up. She is mortified. They try and calm her. As they are leaving the office, the woman who was charged originally comes in saying "I'm looking for Jimmy Berlutti, he called me and said he had something for me..." Jimmy says it was nothing...a mistake...having not given her the money. Helen keeps on but Jimmy has to go to Court where he says he won't give up his client. Helen says she knows who it is, saying it IS the originally wrongly convicted woman. Eugene tells Jimmy they can't ell Helen who it is OR who it isn't. The next time the original kidnapper comes into Jimmy's office Helen and the cops bust her and charge her again, saying that she is the one that passed over the money to Jimmy to quench her guilt. She has no idea what anyone is talking about. Eugene say to Jimmy "If she's convicted, what can we do? We have client Lawyer confidentiality." Jimmy is left with his conscience, wondering how he can tell Helen they have the wrong person (again) without leading them to his client. Lastly, Lindsay is in jail sorting her life sentence. Bobby has brought
Bobby Jr i to say goodbye, as neither of then want to bring the little guy
to jail very often. There is a heavy goodbye scene between mother and son,
and Lindsay tell Bobby in her very determined way "Bobby get me the hell
out of here" He quietly says "We will". Also there is a time where the firm tell Bobby he's got to stop being so tough. He eventually asks if he can get emotion support from others and that he can't do it alone despite his toughness.
