An innocent young girl
only eight years old
still learning the ways of life
sees a man grab a child
to their throat he holds a knife
the child turns to its assailant
eyes bright with fear
the man harshly whispers words
that the young girl cannot hear
the man drags the child to his car
and puts the pedal to the floor
the girl is still just eight years old
but she is innocent no more
her eyes have been opened to the world
she sees the way life is
and as she grows she wonders
if the child she saw lived
remembering that day
she shakes her head and softly sighs
at the hate and anger in the world
"I wonder why, I wonder why..."
