hail and well-met! it is i, the infamous eledriel. i’m somewhat giddy, so this should be delightfully incoherent. i can’t believe this is happening! somehow, this whole thing came out of my poor little brainmeats, and they haven’t been quite the same since. before launching my little rant, I’d like to thank miki- chan for her web-work, and everyone else who helped for their belief in, or at least lack of sneering at, my crazy little brainchild. I’d also like to thank, rather prematurely , everyone who decides to share this vision and try to make some sort of tiny mark on this misguided little blue-green sphere we call planet earth.
anyway, i figure i ought to explain just what this “onion generation” is really all about. the short answer is this: my vision for the onions is the free exchange of ideas between people who feel like the more eccentric young adults of today are not given enough credit for the intelligence and…dare I say it…wisdom that they’ve managed to amass despite all of the less than encouraging peers and the innumerable adults who populate our world with mistakes and our minds with words like ‘impossible’ that shouldn’t be there. my vision for this place and this group of people is one of soldiers of the pen, ink, brush, film, music, and craft, all uniting and fighting to be heard. we will combat the automatic censorship resulting from the reluctance of adults to listen to people younger than they are and see, if not wisdom or correctness in their views, at least a valid point. we’ll also work against our more closed-minded peers, especially those who discount us as a bunch of crazed doomsayers that feel the need to herald the apocalypse on street-corners and point out all of the problems and little hypocrisies the world had somehow managed to ignore before we decided to point them out to it.
what does it take to be an onion? there is no one specific set of ideals that the onions must hold. we’re supposed to be as diverse as possible. in fact, that’s rather the point. what good is it to exchange and share ideas and points of view if all of us think in the same way? all that we onions need have in common is the passion to say what we feel and the desire to share that statement, question, image, or vision with the world. the onions are simply a group of creative renegades who feel like making a statement, any statement at all. we are the ignored, the underrepresented, the outcasts, the unpopular, the loners, the oddballs, eccentrics, doomsayers, freaks, geeks, nerds, and above all, the thinkers. we are everyone who doesn’t usually get a voice or a forum in which to speak. we are building an asylum with nice safe padded walls in which to put the world because everyone has things backwards. we aren’t crazy; the world is.
it is my dearest hope that one day, the onions will have done something for the world, meant something to each other, and demonstrated to the world what we, the young and supposedly insane, can really do. we must show the world that we, like onions, are made of many layers, some superficial and others, the ones hidden deep down in the heart, very stinky. i kid. the deeper layers are the ones in which our genius, or the genius of those of you who possess it, burns. onions may irritate the eyes, but they also make something very bland a bit more interesting. that’s our goal in a nutshell, i guess. we are the onion generation, and we’re here to shake up the world’s view of itself, one lunatic at a time.
