THE MINISTRY OF LIES

I don’t tend to follow politics. I used to, but I don’t. I’ve seen too many governments, too many lies, too many wars, too much, to trust any politician ever again. They’re just running a company, the UK plc, and we just happen to be the shareholders.

So what is Britain?

We’re just a company being run for profit, and the population are just a burden upon the government. If there were just no voters, they could make the country so profitable. And if the people of this country don’t represent the Government, then surely the people could be dissolved?

That would be a lot easier. If the population just stopped thinking, stopped asking questions, stopped voting, and just let the Government get on with ruling life would be so much easier.

Oh, its an old one, and it doesn’t get any better over time. In fact, it gets worse. We used to be able to hope for a socialist paradise when the Tories got rebuked by a long overdue election. But with the current Labour Government liars to a man, and more right wing than even the Conservatives, there is not even the hope of a viable alternative. But I used to believe.

So it’s little surprise to me that Alistair Campbell is attacking the BBC. I don’t understand what its all about really. Alistair Campbell, Tony Blair’s very own Spin Stooge, is accusing the BBC of being biased against the war and of failing to properly represent the case for war.

Lets not even mention the fact that the Government themselves put forward a document that properly represented the case for war. Or that that document was massively plagiarised from a student thesis over a decade old, and that the grounds for war were themselves spurious, biased, and deeply unconvincing.

According to Alistair Campbell, the BBC is being disloyal, treasonous even, for daring to ask questions. For failing to slavishly repeat whatever the Government has said.. After all, the BBC is funded by the Government, with its money, so the BBC should be nothing but a conduit for the word of the Government?

Oh hang on a minute. Doesn’t the Government get all its money from the taxpayers? You know, us. Shouldn’t the Government then, serve us? Doesn’t the BBC have a duty to be impartial, to tell us the truth, to ask the Government all the awkward questions?

Such arrogance eh, that we, the people, actually want to be told the truth? But even more arrogant than that, the impudent, unaccountable Government Spin Doctor who demands that the BBC, the last truly impartial wing of the media, repeats whatever he says without question?

Since when did the BBC become a wing of the government, the Ministry Of Propoganda?

The BBC is regarded, worldwide, as the finest source of news and information in the world. It doesn’t have any advertisers, nor any corporate sponsorship, nor any shareholders. Nor does it have any commercial impetus to stay in profit, no global megacorporation of vested interests to serve, no meglomaniac director who ensures that content is biased towards protecting his interests and keeping the truth underwraps.

This is why Alistair Campbell is so upset. His government tried to force onto us a series of lies and half-truths to justify a war that murdered thousands, and now that they’ve invaded Iraq, now that they haven’t found those imaginary Weapons of Mass Destruction, now that they realise that they are accountable for lying to the world, to the people, and that thousands of people were murdered for a lie, and that their jobs are on the line, they’ve decided to deflect the news from the questions we really should be asking.

Did those weapons exist? Where are those weapons? How many people died in the war? What are the real reasons behind the war?

Why is the Government trying to control the media? Why is it trying to silence the awkward questions?

What have they got to hide?

The Government never tells us the truth, never tells us the facts. It will only ever tells us enough to govern us, to control us, to get us to agree to its bidding. The Government doesn’t represent the will of the people. The Government wills the people to represent it. Think for yourself. Never be scared to ask a question.

The Government lied, distorted the facts, and perverted the course of justice in order to justify its war. That is an indisputable fact. If it were true, we would now have found those weapons. But there aren’t any.

When liars hold the seat of power, when liars try to control and silence their opponents, is when those who hold the truth, those who know the facts should resist. Democracy and the truth itself are at stake.
