“THE LONGEST NIGHT” 02-05-97.
The longest night
before a perfect day
we believe in freedom
we believe in justice
and unity
together we are power
this world is beautiful
to make great thi snation
to make great this world
a triumph of imagination
to put the Great back into Britain
for everyone
this nation has declared
its message clear:
Good Riddance to Selfish Rubbish
.
commentary:
An absurdly optimistic attempt to paint a better future a day after the first day in England that wasn’t under Conservative rule for eighteen years. Every agent defects, every artist sells out. And now there is no credible alternative. What is worse than getting what you want, and realising that what you want is just as bad as what was there before? Is it better to pin hopes on something that cannot happen, or to have your hopes realised, and ring empty? So that there is no hope?
