“A LIFE BEYOND” 30 Jul 01

I told you that one day
I’d be just like everyone else
walking in peaked white caps
counting down to the end
with an ever receding hairline
an ever shrinking circle of friends

Life shrinks to the triangle of
the pub, shops, and home
my lovers circle the afterlife
I’m waiting alone
I hold onto life
as desperately as anything

I thought at some point
I’d reach a life beyond mundanities
beyond unclean sheets
unwashed plates
and bills draining to be paid
I have another drink -
there’s dinner to be made.
