“KENT” 6 July 96
Confused children play games
with balls and dogs and bikes
unsure of quite where
the unhappiness lies
A yellow photograph, smiling in shorts
a suburban cul-de-sac of mortgaged hurt,
I don’t want to be pretend lower-middle class
I want to be able to sit McDonalds
My friends had a Big Mac
I ate a ham sandwich from a plastic bag
you applaud our elected misleaders
they kill your children for a tatty flag
the red of our blood
the blue of the sea
the white of the far right
on a flag that is nothing to do with me
essex. wessex. sussex. escape.
