“FOR THE UNKNOWN WOMAN” 4 October 2002

Every workday morning
as we line up on the platforms
breath frozen from the winter
waiting for the shot behind us
I see you

The same places on the starting grid
the 8.21 to Waterloo
Who am I trying to kid?
There will always be a me. And a you.
Never an us.

For two who never spoke
We grew old together
I saw the haircuts, the bad outfits
and I loved you all the same
on the morning train.

Some other man holds you in his arms
some other eyes hold your glance
as your heart rises
above the concrete skies.
I think I could have

loved you
