“IT COULD BE ME” 7 Oct 1996

I went out with you once
when you were seventeen
now you’re a star
and your light shines

I’ve been thinking about you
all the things you said
I’m still here on the ground
hoping to fly,

You’re up in the lights
I’m down -
all the lies
about growing up in small towns

full of people you hate
you liked people
like us once
and all that has changed

There’s nothing in the world
You’ve got it all
a limo and a Private Jet
I’m fighting with the gas bill

I can’t compare
with your brighter, significant others
I stare at the TV
and think of nothing

You can buy your misery
in any high street store
favourite tortured artist
on another world tour

You were never that deep
when you were just 17
I think I loved you more
when you were a nobody

I could’ve been
up there
instead of your
vacant, empty stare

But I’m just another bitter drunk
in a backstreet pub
I could’ve been me
But it was never meant to be.
