Welcoming the Gentry, Sidhe and Fairy

Rev Thom Potter, 2001

Ordinarily, the terms, “Gentry,” “Sidhe,” and “Fairy” are interchangeable. For this work, however, there is a difference. The Gentry are those virtual beings who are fully aware of their actions, and may be held responsible for such actions. The Gentry may be as spiritually evolved as Humans, but have never had a physical body as we do. The Sidhe (sounds like Shea) are of a similar nature, but are not as evolved. The Sidhe may do what they do out of instinct, much the way a dog or a snake will. We have known the Sidhe to inhabit streams and fields, and so are readily associated as the spirits of streams and fields. The Fairy are similar to the Sidhe and the Gentry, but are actually the virtual parts of plants. The Fairy have physical bodies, such as trees and flowers. Some may even be the virtual parts of animals.

PS: The comparison between the Sidhe and a dog is one of intelligence. Yes, Dogs are intelligent, as are the Sidhe I am comparing their intelligence to. This is not to say that a Fairy Dog (Padfoot) or a Fairy Cat (Pukka) is as intelligent as a dog or a cat. These Daimonic beings have proven to be incredibly more intelligent than all but the smartest humans. Should one of these beings choose to join your festival, honor them, because they have something important to contribute, and would not be there if it weren’t important.

Like a dog, these folk think mostly with emotions and instinct. So communicating with them using emotions is best. The one language that seems to evoke emotions best is music. I find we play the best music on a pentatonic minor scale. The mood ought to be happy, like an up beat dance. {Please see my Essay, Music as Thought for more in this subject.}

Legend:
These are the scales that we can play on any tuned instrument, safely, with improvisation and without fear of discord.
The Steps in red indicate a bitonic scale.
The Steps in green indicate a tritonic scale.
Both combine to form the Pentatonic Scales.
We should not play steps that I have blocked out, as they can sound rather bad with these others.

Calling and Welcoming the Gentry, Sidhe, and the Fairy.

The Magister will take up a flute or prefered aerophone, and the handmaiden will take up a hand drum (preferably with a deep, earthy tone). Together with the rest of the fellowship, they will “see” the Gentry, Sidhe, and Fairy enter the circle with the music. The fellowship may hum to the tune, and all may welcome the rhythm into their bodies.
