This part of the rite presents the first spark to the circle. El Sharath in Hebrew means, “God Servant.” This name will represent this part of the rite, as well as the duty of the light that we generate from it.

The Guardian will shave a magnesium block with the boline knife onto the charcoal. There ought to be enough to light the charcoal and a candle. When the Guardian has shaved enough, the Guardian will hand the magnesium block (which ought to have an iron stick attached) with the boline to the Priestess. The Priest will retrieve the crucible. The Magister and the Handmaiden will hold the two Temple Lights, while the Quarter Masters will hold their respective lamps.

A Note about the first candle is in order, here. This candle has the special name, “Lucifer.” Lucifer is a Roman god of a similar flavor to Prometheus. Both have stolen divine light and brought it before Humanity. Society has punished both for this act. Lucifer simply means, “Light Bearer,” and is a reference to the morning star who announces the coming of the Day. Hence, it is fitting that it should be placed at this point in the ritual. This candle will be the first lit, and from him all other lights will be lit.

By Striking the iron bar, the priestess will draw fire from the Earth. This will start the circle of creation for this rite. The priest, who holds the crucible, will receive this spark, but may not look upon it until the magnesium has turned to ash. The Guardian will hold the Luciferous so that it can be lit from that first flame. The Guardian may Watch what he is doing.

With that, the guardian will shave the magnesium block over the censor. Then, the Guardian will strike the Iron stick so that the magnesium ignites. The “Luciferus” should be lit from that spark. The Guardian will chant:

The Shadow and the Light are one to you … I am wonderously and marvelousely made.

The Shadow and the Light burn as one in us.
We are wondrously and marvelously made.

The Guardian will look to the Heavens, the Priestess to the Guardian, all the others will look to the priestess and the guardian. When judged to be proper, the Guardian will declare:

Now, we begin!

The Guardian will then light the Temple Lights and The Quarter Lanterns will then be lit from the Luciferous. The Quarter Masters will find their place among the Living Wall of the Temple, and together will ambulate with the sun to the circle’s boundary. They will continue to ambulate until their time. The Magister and the Handmaiden will set the Temple lights into their places, then attend to their duties assisting the priests.
