XG Gold is one the few and probably the best editor/librarian for the Yamaha QS300. Actually this software can handle many XG MIDI instruments (DB50XG, SW60XG, MU10, QY700 and QS300) and creates 100% pure QS300 sound for all QS compatible XG gears.

One remark (complaint ?) is that apparently, at least till the version 3.0, it cannot handle openly the Yamaha QS300 proprietary format (filename.q3x, where x can be either: a for "all", v for "voices" or s for "songs").

Actually this is not completely exact. We sent an email to the author of XG Gold, Achim Stulgies, and he replied us. So, we are pleased to publish here his trick to overtake this limitation. Read the following instruction and try yourself !

The native Yamaha .q3X format is undocumented :-(

Do the following if you want to write an XG-Gold QS bank to the native
Yamaha .q3X format:

- start XG-Gold
- enter the bank loader
- select the bank you want to write into the native Yamaha .q3X format
- press 'Transmit': the bank will be transmitted to your QS300
- put a (blank (?), but formatted!) disk into your QS300 synth
- finally use the QS300 synth DISK functions to write it to disk
- that's all!


Do the following if you want to write a Yamaha .q3X bank to the XG-Gold
QS format:

- start XG-Gold
- enter the bank loader
- press 'Receive': the current QS300 bank will be received
- finally name it to save it to your HD
- that's all!
