TypeDesigner 2.6 works just fine under Windows95!

Introduction

With Type-Designer you are able to design high-quality fonts in the Adobe Type 1 and TrueType format. Type-Designer is developed for people who

Type-Designer is a fast, small and excellent utility for all kinds of font work.

The following statement about the Type 1 into TrueType conversion proves the excellence of Type-Designer:

»Type-Designer is the only program available on the PC that correctly converts Type 1 fonts into TrueType. All other programs distort the original letterforms and lose the original hints, but TrueType fonts generated by Type-Designer are virtually indistinguishable from the original Type 1 designs - even at small sizes and low resolutions. The program is a major achievement. Everyone who is seriously interested in fonts will want it.«

System Requirements
You will need a 80286 compatible computer, Windows 3.1 and a mouse.
Recommended are:
80386 computer, Windows 3.1 running in enhanced mode for '386 PCs,
monitor-graphics card combination with a resolution of at least 800 * 600

TypeDesigner 2.6 works fine under Windows95!

Installation and Start of Program
Just copy the three files TD.EXE, TD.HLP and BWCC.DLL into a subdirectory and add TD.EXE to a Program Managers group. Simply start by clicking on the TD-icon. Or run SETUP.EXE.

Restriction of demo version

The only restriction of this demo version is, that you are not able to save your work, but with the TEST button you are able to look at the achieved TrueType quality.

Type Face Sample
A free high-quality CommScript font is included with this demo. Open COMSC___.PFB with Type-Designer to get a deep look inside. Marvel what a really well designed computer-font looks like.

Type-Designer 2.6

Additions to Manual

Even after printing of the manual, we have continued to advance the Type-Designer programme. We have added more functionality, and this file you are reading explains those functions, which you will not find in the printed manual.

Stem Widths

Under the Menu-item Parameter - Stem Widths you can define the most important stroke widths. These global hints allow for an improved quality of Type-1- and TrueType-fonts at small to smallest sizes. Irregularities which can appear through errors in rounding off and digitizing can be corrected with the help of these values. Furthermore they can equalize differences of capitalised and small characters with respect to their stroke widths. This feature can be influenced with the Hint-Smoothing value, to be found in the Parameter - Info menu. It governs the threshold in size, below which the smoothing takes effect.

With TrueType it determines a slightly different threshold: Below which difference of current and actual stem width the smoothing can be dispensed with. Too large a value can result in a loss of intermediate sizes, though. The optimal value here is really a matter of experimenting with different values.

In Type-1-fonts this value determines from which point size onwards an overshoot control can be dispensed with (at 300 dpi resolution).

Option Bold

If you have defined the main stem widths and have enabled the Option Bold in the Parameter - Info menu you will find that hints will be enlarged by factor 1.3 at very small point sizes, but this depends also on the value of Hint-Smoothing. This results in a bolder looking typeface, in situations where the difference between a normal and a bold font wasn´t very visible before.

Different Hinting for Start and End Points

Until now it wasn´t possible to use different hints for the start and end points of a particular segment. Both points are on the same coordinates, therefore are shown onscreen only once. They are indicated by a number, when you activate the Start-Tool for instance.

Depending on a character´s complexity it can be useful to place different hints on a start and an endpoint. The latter is set (as usal) with the Hint Tool, the former can be set with the right hand mouse button (instead of the left hand button). The hint for the start point is coloured in red, whereas all other hints appear in mangenta.

Different Hint Replacemants for Start and End Points.

Just like hinting can be different for start and end points, the hint placements can be different too.

You can assign hint replacement locations just like before by using the Start Tool and clicking with the right mouse hand button. If you click several times onto the starting point of a segment (which is also the end point of a segment), you will see upto two "R" near that point. The lower and lighter "R" is assigned to the starting point, the normal "R" belongs to the end point. By clicking several times you will see the four possible combinations of hint replacements there.

Test-Function

When you click on the Test button you will now see two characters next to each other. The left one is the current character, as in the upper left preview window. The right one is the character which was the current one when you clicked on the test button last. That makes it easier to see the changes you made, for instance in hinting or design.

OTHER PRODUCTS FROM DTP SOFTWARE

WinKeySwap

A comfortable Windows utility to reassign keystrokes to characters. Any Alt - Ctrl - or dead key combination (also shifted) can be mapped onto any character. Also has a "from right to left" button to reverse writing direction. It provides a button on EACH application bar which allows you to enable or disable the keyboard remapping from any windows programme. It can also be remote controled through DDE links.

Please download the demo WKSDEMO.ZIP from various sources or request it from Norbert. WKS is available in english and german.

DTP's Weltsprachen und Symbole

Although currently only in german, this programme package doesn't need much explanation. It contains the following 1st class Truetype fonts:

It also contains WinKeySwap-Light (no print-outs of key-maps).

DTP-Software has solutions for font problems. We produced many fonts for private and corporate, for many systems and for many languages. Ask us, we most likely can help with inexpensive solutions.
